tom sherwood that has report. >> reporter: the south capital street bridge called the douglass bridge carries vehicles into and out of the city. why do we need a new bridge? >> the bridge we have now is about 60 years old. we made many repairs to the bridge. the design structure when the bridge was built. we need a new structure to last another 60 years. >> reporter: the new bridge is one of the highest prioritiepri. it's estimated to cost $800 million. it will require a major commitment from the federal government as well as the city. >> if i had my way and had the money, we could see a new bridge in six to seven years. >> reporter: it's not a long time. the city was notified it is getting $68 million now in federal funds to buy the land for the new bridge. it will be next to the old one. >> we will create a round about type of interchange to allow you to go to the various destinations. instead of signalizing it and creating back up, we are trying to create free flow. >> reporter: it's expected to boost the booming economic redevelopment in the southeast waterfront near the new baseb

tom sherwood reports. >> reporter: federal immigration officials round up and deport tens of thousands of illegal immigrants each year. under a federal secure communities program that. >> try to get local law enforcement to help by detaining illegal immigrants on even minor charges. now all 13 d.c. councilmembers are supporting a new city law, not just a resolution, that would bar local police or corrections officers from assisting the federal effort, except in extreme cases of violent criminals or other serious crimes. city leaders say the federal program is costly and undermines community cooperation with police and public safety. >> and we're also creating a real sense of distrust among our immigrants who are less likely to cooperate with police in solving crime and preventing crime. so it's not a secure communities program. it's an insecure communities program. >> reporter: the district could face pushback from federal officials or congress, which oversees the city budget. but local civil rights activists say the tough stance should be applauded. >> i'm delighted that every member

tom sherwood joins us to tell us how this is unfolding. >> this could be a big deal. the city wants the redskins to play in washington. the training facility would be a big step in that direction. the washington redskins with a tough 3-4 record now practicing in virginia wednesday preparing for sunday's game against the 49ers at fedex field. vincent gray and city councilmembers made a trip to tampa to view the training facilities of the buccaneers. it's part of a $30 million redevelopment of the area, including a luxury hotel and hall of fame for fans year round. possibly, a new hospital. sources say former redskins greg owens took the mayer and michael brown on the secret trip. mayor gray's trip was mentioned by the washington times. news 4 says officials are mad the word leaked out. redskins general manager bruce allen joined the redskins from tampa and praised the training facilities there. the city would make rfk and surrounding land available to the team. now no one would comment for the record about the city trip. mayor gray is said to be furious that it leaked
