so let me begin with a map of virginia, appropriately enough. a map that in some ways tells the story of washington's life from cradle to grave. and in the book one of the nice things that we've been able to do with the book, and i want to say a thanks, too, to the art directer and the designer of the book who createdded such a beautiful -- created such a beautiful object. and we've also been able show close-ups of these maps. these are large maps. of it's pretty hard to see some of the detail, but we have dozens of detailed views looking at where washington was born and grew up, and, of course, this is the country that he returned to in his great victory at yorktown. so his life kind of comes full circle in this map by fry and jefferson, a manuscript from 1751, first edition from 1753, right at the givenning of washington's military -- beginning of washington's military career. there was actually a great moment where joshua fry who designed, who drew the map is riding out to meet washington on the frontier and assume command of the regiment, so

he was put in charge of all the military forces in virginia. at a time when virginia was the most populous and powerful state in the union. his perseverance and bravery were already the stuff of legend but i must warn you when you start reading the book the young washington is not the wise paragon of later years. he is crass, dogged and even pushy in his pursuit of money, status and power. washington first rebelled against the british not for idealistic reasons but personal reasons. the british deny him the royal commission in the army that he covets. the british sell him shoddy and overpriced goods from london. the british band settlement west of the allegheny mountains at a time when washington is amassing real-estate. the british are bad for business. the british are a bad for your career. there are sections where you are yet in the company of historical greatness even though there are a lot of admirable and extraordinary traits that push out wonderful of things to come. the bane of washington's reviewed was not will george but someone more

he was in virginia and had been collecting dirt on jefferson. so he publishes these things saying, you know, our president has this enslaved black mistress, children who are running around monticello and look just like him. and at that point you say, all right. what should he do? the first thing he does is say nothing. i did not have sex with that woman. but what he did do is to things. the first thing he did was he insisted that his daughters come to washington, which they had never done and were unwilling to do. he is like we will buy you some weeks. they had to go to washington and do this. so they had to go and fly the flag for him. he kept them out of public life except for that. we did this for you once and are not doing it again. phone us later. we are not doing it. so he made them fly the flag for him. and then the second thing that he did was, of course, they are certainly letting him know even if they are not saying directly, get rid of for. madison and monroe at this point, you know, it's like you could sell her. center to another pla

and aspired to accumulate all the trappings of a first grandñ of virginia gentleman.in the process, of course, he became very unhappy as all americans did with the system the colonies were trapped. constantly in debt acquiring refinery from england although the tobacco prices were on the slide and washington was reluctant revolutionary but once he joined the continental movement, he never looked back even when the virginia governor threatened to invalidate all claims to the western land that he acquired as bounty for his military service along with the southern veterans. he hoped he could try washington away from the movement with these threats and it did not work. washington attended as a delegate to the continental congress of course. july of 1775 as commander in chief of the continental army was on his way to be seized the british and here is a map and washington's collection. a beautiful map that use is not only cartography but wonderful drawings to dramatize the opening phases of the revolutionary war. here we can see after lexington concord april of 75, the batt
