i know that when we do reduced, because of meerkats, we decided san francisco would be a 0 waste city by 2020. separating out our trash, we create jobs and produce opportunities to produce items that can be reused and renewed. when i looked at the bill, starting in 2008, i told my father that the big difference here in the presidio was a high- risk from all of the divisions. -- was the hires from all of the divisions. in the maintenance and and operations division, they kept letting them, they were the most above the divisions. $13,000 per month, we had to run a meeting. one young man decided he did not want to be last anymore. the gentleman there that was eating a banana, he took it and threw it in a garbage can. one man said that he was sick and tired of being last and that is when things started to change at the presidio. each person that i have come to work with, they have effectively help to this bill to go down to where it is now. frank was the coordinator before i even came on board. he has been the eyes in the years for the facility. anything that he sees that is out of place,

runoff occurs when people waste water through washing their cars in the street, hosing down sidewalks and parking lots, their irrigation systems overspray. narrator: in a city of 12 million people, those seemingly small bits of wasted water accumulate to enormous amounts. shapiro: so all that ends up in our streets, ends up in catch basins, storm drains, into our storm drain system, and for some of the city, parts of the city, it ends up here at smurrf. 350,000 gallons come here on a daily basis, producing recycled water, and that can be reused for landscape irrigation and indoor toilet flushing. the pumps can only handle so much water, which is generally when it's not rain, the dry-weather runoff, so if you get a storm of a decent size, the pumps will shut down automatically and the water will just continue to flow out into the ocean and it carries a lot of bacteria and people can get sick when they're swimming in the water near a flowing storm drain. everyone knows you don't go in the water for 72 hours after it rains. you just don't. this is the dirtiest beach in southern california. doheny beach. i've surfed this twice -- i've gotten sick both times. na
