. >> david plouffe, thank you. that is all in on this wednesday night. happy new year to you all. my friend ali velshi in for my friend alex. >> i'm ali velshi in for alex wagner. ron desantis described it as a crisis and a war. donald trump called it an invasion. with less than two weeks left until the iowa caucuses, today trump and desantis published dueling op-eds in the des moines register. both cast immigration as the most pressing problem facing our country. both candidates promised that they and they alone can fix it. now, what both trump and desantis are advancing in these op-eds are neither actual fixes to our country's border issues, nor are they actual immigration policy, but they are the sort of plans you can tell people you have, and they are articulating them to the public. they want to let fewer brown people in. they want immigration to be as painful as possible. none of that addresses the root cause of migration and the actual problems with our immigration system, which are real. but it is a plan, and it is a plan around which republicans are largely unified. this

it's like, maybe he heard from the unofficial surrogate, david plouffe, as well. we don't know.ell, you're an actual pollster, unlike the rest of us. when you look at these numbers and kind of the makeup of the coedition, there could be democrats helping nikki haley get across the finish line, could be independents. by finish line, finish better than the polls are saying. what is your assessment of what you heard? >> a couple of things, context. first of all, we should, again, we should context it. early exit, caution. early exit polling, caution, caution, caution. >> important. caution, caution, caution, yes. >> right, on early exit polling. if you're the haley campaign, to that point, you are i think -- you are emboldened. also, this is what makes new hampshire primaries so difficult to forecast. because lodge, you do have the ability for people to come in and out of a primary who are not necessarily likely primary voters. i think you have 16% from the early exit poll -- caution -- 16% of these voters voting in a primary who say they haven't voted in a primary before. so a lot

two people extremely familiar with this are david plouffe, who served this campaign manager of presidentresident barack obama and hillary clinton in 2016 presidential run against donald trump. they both join me. now i was struck about that electability number, because i know from the perspective of democratic voters, when it's a democratic party on the out, so i think about the primary against and for w. bush, and the primary in 2020, that number is like 65. right, am i wrong? that is the thing. every discussion is, who will be the person to be bush, who will beat trump? >> and democratic voters decided in 2017 that that person was joe biden, and they never wavered from that. >> in that polling? >> in that polling, yeah. even as biden lost in iowa and new hampshire, he's still that eight national polls. we always say, we don't have national primaries, but we got to have national primaries now. what i have experienced in talking to trump voters is not day -- it's just a much deeper thing for them, but it is about vindication, retribution, revenge for their guy who gets at their life so cl

david plouffe, who you know, said if haley can't win new hampshire, the primary is over. republican primary is over. katy said something similar. did you see a person who could pull this off? >> you know, i did then. i think one sort of -- one thing that people might be understating today is that she didn't have a particularly good night in iowa last night. she finished third. that's below expectations. she was -- a lot of people were looking to her to finish second. the last poles had her finishing second and being propelled somewhat into new hampshire where she has been putting so many of her eggs. so, not only that, but desantis, if he finished third, he could have dropped out last night and could have been a true clean shot she had at trump starting today. so that didn't happen. but it does seem like much of the conversation coming out of iowa has been trump's continued dominance and it has been jumped right to the courtroom and also to new hampshire today. i think people have skipped over the fact that she did underperform a bit in iowa. i think -- i agree with katy,

david plouffe who is obama's guy who was you obama in the early obama administration and he's become a kind you know he became a kind of counsel or adviser to two brand and his senior senior strategic advisor said. okay. senior and part of what you know what the quote we pull out is that he's he makes the sale to cities on exact those grounds which is unlike unlike a factory a kind of stadium or stadium. we're not asking uber is not asking for, you know, massive tax breaks or we're not asking for they're not asking for subsidies. all they're asking for is for you to allow them to in your city. and so no costs. of course, what we say is there's tremendous costs. and i you said it exactly right. there's ideological costs. there's infrastructure costs. more cars on the road. and there's there's deeply political costs. so i appreciate the question. i'm just going to avoid that. so the second part of it, which is, you know, do we why is it so nice? it's so crappy. it's really hard to govern a place, right, with strangers uncontested land. and i think that a lot of the policymaker is that

and former obama campaign manager david plouffe. molly is still with us.few are going to shed a tear for threats made to billionaire donors, but trump suggesting that anyone who donates to nikki haley will be banished from the republican party. just how extreme is that? >> no one is going to have sympathy for those threatened, but it's pathetic because at the end of the day, i think that those that give to haley, trump will be upset until they come kiss the ring. anybody that does that automatically gets in his good graces. it's fascinating to me as a former practitioner this is what donald trump is focused on. don't really like getting advice, but he should be focused on joe biden during the election general election. it speaks to how what wered he is and how focused he is on anybody that dare os oppose him. at the end of the day, it's not a smart way to enter this phase of the campaign. and my guess is it gets haley some light. maybe some of those donors will back out and maybe they won't. but it keeps her in the is spotlight. obviously, donald trump is
