- >> there wasn't just a secret service agent in the vehicle.rge. >> robert angle. >> that individual, who i've worked with in new york, washington d.c. is one of the greatest stand-up agents i've ever met in my entire life. whatever bobby says, that's what happened. i trust his judgment. everybody trusts his judgment. that's why he was in that position on that day. the special agent in charge is getting intelligence feeds. he's understanding the environment at the u.s. capitol, the one you walked into it my friend was destabilized. >> we have secret service and police recordings today. there was a recording with a guy with an ar-15 in a tree. >> these are coming to the command staff on the ground during that rally. they have to make that decision. everyone knows the president want tod go up there. but the protective model, methodology and everything the secret service stands for were never going to put the president in harm's way. i don't care how much he wants to yell and scream he wants togo. we have a responsibility, not just to the presiden

and a former secret service. i want to start with you, hearing what was allegedly going on inside the white house at the moment you were being attacked and fellow officers were being attacked i cannot imagine what that was like listening to this today. >> yeah, i remember thinking to myself, it's always worse than you could have imagined with these people. going into the hearing, hearing it was a emergency hearing. we have this news -- obviously like probably a lot of americans i had reservations about how bad it could be. and it's always worse than i thought. again, when it comes to the knowledge of specifically what was happening, i noticed how there was a time stamp on this conversation that took place or taken place between miss hutchinson and meadows in which he said the president didn't want to do anything about what was happening at the capitol. that was almost precisely the moment i was being dragged out of the tunnel and almost beaten to death. it was clear to me that donald trump, mr. meadows and most o

secret service. i was also a secret service protectee for years.eat strings directed at the protectee constantly. i don't want to get into too much detail about that. so that is not unusual. what is most unusual, as you pointed out in your league in, is the chief of of the protectee having to report one, instigated, any threat instigated by an opposed to running mate. that was the absurdity of the times we're living in a year and a half ago. and i'll be interested to read what's in the forthcoming book, i write a new york times report, and like everyone else, i find it extraordinary, and absurd. >> sometimes, i go back and forth about, you know, this, how bad is it thermometer. i asked myself to not get too lost in the present, and not lose perspective about what the threats threat star democracy are. one thing that i noticed is that the interactions i have with people that served in the obama administration who are pretty clear eyed, and have a perspective, i think, sometimes. and a little bit of like distance from like you guys in the news cycle

secret service. and clint watts, army veteran, former fbi special agent, and a distinguished research fellow at the foreign research institute. carol, i want you to give us some background. who is robert engel, what do we need to know about the secret service during the trump presidency? >> great questions, and so concise as you so cleanly are. first off, i will say alicia, the thing that you really need to know, we all need to keep in mind about the secret service during the trump administration, is that president of president there can be some loyalists that stick by a particular president. donald trump politicized the secret service in a way that no other president had before. the most similar situation might have been president nixon, who tried to use secret service agents as spies on some of his political opponents, candidates for president, he tried to install agents he thought were loyal to him to sort of catch them in the act of something bad, and report back to him. donald trump politicized

your one little big lie. >>> just in to cnn, the secret service weighing in just a moment ago in theo the january 6th committee where she recounted how she was told that trump lunged add a secret service agent and tried to grab the steering wheel when that agent refused to take trump to the capitol on january 6th, correspondent josh campbell has information on this. what is the secret service saying so far on this. >> after the bombshell allegations, she was saying, she was briefed this former trump house staffer by a member of trump team, as the president was leaving the rally, there was this altercation in the limousine where he thought he was going to the capitol but instead was told by security detail, no, sir, we have to go back to the west wing of the white house. the staffer alleged at this point the president tried to grab the steering wheel, lunged for one of the secret service agents. the agent now coming out saying they are prepared to respond to the allegations. i'll read the statement, the united states secret service has been cooperating with the select committee since

these fraud schemes are not unfamiliar to the secret service. phishing campaigns to nondelivery of fraudulent goods and services and those schemes have evolved into more sophisticated cybercrime such as ransomware attacks and business email compromises. i would like to highlight the successful completion of the secret service's investigation into a a michigan unemployment insurance fraud scheme. in this case i contract employee for the state of michigan unemployment insurance agency conspired with others to submit hundreds of false unemployment insurance claims. over the course of the subjects criminal activity, in exchange for bribes, she released payment on 700 fraudulent claims resulting in the illegal disbursement of more than $3.7 million. the joint secret service investigation with the department of labor and multiple other federal and state agencies epitomizes outstanding teamwork across the law enforcement community. the subject has always been sentenced to 58 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of nearly $3.8 m

there is reaction from the secret service. what do you make of all of this? >> listen, the testimony was stunning, but we're seeing that push back by the secret service now. the truth will come out, the secret service said that those agents are willing to testify under oath and give their side of the story, but what i don't want lost in all of that, because i think that that back and forth is a little bit of a distraction. the real point here is that there was a decision made by the special agent in charge at that moment not to go to the capitol. why? the reason being is because based upon the secret service threat methodology, the way that they conduct their productive operations the u.s. capitol was starting to deteriorate, the crowds, the protesters, the auto rioters that were going they knew that the capitol was becoming destabilized. you never take the president into an environment that would be a danger to him or others. so they knew that. this is basically part of the protective methodology that the secret service deploys everywhere. so this was a fact

it is known to the publicm not to secret service --known to the public, known to secret service, they are able to plan in advance. and off the record movement is confined to the knowledge of a very small group of advisors and staff, typically small group would travel with him, mostly just included in the national security package. you can pull and off the record movement together in less than an hour. it is a way to circumvent having to release it to the press. if that is the goal of it. or to not have as many security parameters put in place ahead of time. to make the movement happen. >> thank you. let's turn back now to the president's plans to travel to the capitol january 6. maloney was concerned about the applications of such a trip and agreed with the sucre service that it shouldn't happen. ms. hutchinson, did you have any conversations with maloney about his concerns about the president going to the capitol january 6? >> the third, he approached me knowing mark had raised the prospect of going up to the capitol january 6. we had a brief, private conversation, where he said to m

>> very unlikely we will see an active secret service agent testified. nothing would precluded, but the secret service -- the reason to protect the private intimate conversations of protect teas, i have never heard of an instance where an agent testified or vowed interaction against anyone they were charged with protecting. i do not know there was anything potentially criminal. this sums like this might be assault, but this is a different set of circumstances. i don't know what that adds up to. with a lot of the things that cassidy hutchinson said, i would like to know if the secret service denies it. i would like to know if other people witnessed it. they have ample opportunity. she was under oath. the people disparaging her on twitter or elsewhere are not. mark meadows is among the people that have been invited to testify. mike pence and many members of congress. the white house counsel. all of them have the opportunity. i think the lack of pushback we are getting into the details of what ms. hutchinson had to say speaks volumes. it is jarring, certain
