bob redell has been on the scene all morning long. bob, are crews making good progress there? >> well, the smoke on this side of the millbrae community center, sam, has just turned white within i would say the past ten minutes which the usually an indication that the water is doing a pretty good job of dousing the flames inside. we are seeing plenty of flames on the other side of the building where the fire is still blasting through the roof. i don't know if you can see that second ladder. that's dumping water on that section of the building i was just referring to. fire started around 3:50 this morning. the fire grew so fast, so large, that the command staff called for a second, third, and fourth alarm. that means they called for backup, extra support three times. there are about 60 men and women fighting this fire from several fire departmenting including south city, sam bruno, bruno, and central county heading up the command. the fire had been burning for over two hours. we just spoke with the central county fire chief who said this fire is so difficult to put you because i

. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the scene. we talked with both firefighters and homeowners this morning and their stories are not in agreement. correct, they believe it's illegal fireworks that caused the garage at home here at griffin to burn last night. we're not far from discovery kingdom. you can see the fire department was able to keep this fire contained to the garage. so it did not damage the interior but the fire department did cut holes in the roof of the main part of the house perhaps to vebt smoke out of the attic. i did speak briefry with the homeowner off camera who doesn't think it was an illegal fourth of july celebration, rather a faulty appliance, perhaps a fridge. the fire department tells us otherwise it was illegal fireworks that caused this man's garage to burn. >> the fire was held to a single alarm. we had a fire investigator on the scene that reported the cause of the fire as illegal fireworks started on the side of the house that breached the wall and made it into the garage. >> reporter: the homeowner

. >> bob redell is there live. bob, we understand damages could be in the tens of thousands of dollars. >> reporter: it's too early to tell but, yes, significant damage where on singleton avenue on the island of alameda at the all-safe storage fa safety. around midnight when the city of alameda fire department arrived, they found several units, namely these right here, on fire. we count at least six, possibly seven units destroyed. they also saw smoke pouring out from an additional ten units. the fire department sprayed water and foam and cut holes in the doors of the other units to give the smoke a chance to escape. total of 25 units that sustained heavy smoke damage. what made fighting this a challenge is some of the units were packed floor to ceiling with boxes and other personal items making it difficult to access the fire. no one was hurt and they are still trying to determine the cause. again, a fire around midnight destroying several units here at the all-safe storage on alameda. reporting live, bob redell, "

. >> "today in the bay" bob redell is live this morning. and rescuers are working now. when will they be back at it, bob? >> reporter: well, they called off their search last night at around 1:00 in the morning. the east bay regional parks police department say they have a dive team back out here in about two hours at around 7:00 this morning to resume their search here at the shadows cliff area for the two missing swimmers. the agency tells us, however, it's no longer a rescue operation, rather an active recovery. in other words, the thought is that those two swimmers have drowned. it's just a matter of finding their bodies. it's not clear how the swimmers got into distress. if you're not familiar, shadows cliffs used to be a gravel cor . corp. -- quarry. life guards are on duty during the summer months but we have yet to confirm the case when the two swimmers disappeared yesterday. reporting live here in pleasantton. bob redell is live at the scene, what do we know now? >> we see they're still outside of that building a couple blocks up from us. in that building was not only a rehearsal space for bands, but a place for raves and slot machines. lpd drawn to this location here around 3:40 this morning after someone was shot. in the past few hours, swath made entry to that building. officers they they did find a shotgun and a replica handgun. opd arrested two people in connection with this shooting. throughout the morning, police also removed about 12 additional people from the building, placed some into temporary custody, questioned them, and let them go. >> someone was shot in the foot. >> what was going on in there? >> it was an accident or something. >> a friend of mine stayed over there. >> is it a nightclub or something? >> no, a bunch of guys hanging out playing dice and stuff. >> for a number of hours this morning police had several blocks shut down around this location. as you see back out here live, they have condensed that crime scene. police

bob redell is joining us live. they've been cracking down on illegal fireworks. >> reporter: good morning. you can see by the sign hanging out fire station one all fireworks are illegal here in the city limits. in an effort to try to crack down, the city recently enacted new laws and stiffer fines to stop people from setting off fireworks here in the south bay. the main concern over safety and the threat of fire. this was the scene last night up north in brentwood. firefighters suspect this fire in the not far from the sunset athletics complex was fireworks related. it started as a grass fire that spread to palettes. back here, the city has more new laws. because of new laws code enforcers and park rangers can cite offend eer eroffenders. the fine is similar to a parking ticket. >> i can only hope it's going to deter people. i ask people not concentrate on what the law says and concentrate on what is safe. >> reporter: the fines for illegal fireworks in san jose are up. reporting live in san jose bob redell "today

we start with nbc bay area coverage bob redell. they thought they knew what the cause was when i was there, have they narrowed it down any further? >> they think it might be fireworks related. we're here in the east foothills of san jose where you see some of the cliffs here. it is popular for bikers and for people setting off fire works. the call came in around 2:30 this morning. you can see the wall of flames. it might sound like a lot for a small brush fire, but not when you consider that the fire season is in full swing and the conditions are so dry. >> with different weather conditions it could have been far more serious. this is a very, very hazardous area. so we had a huge response of resources. >> no homes threatened this morning, the closest house is about a mile away. they had this fire contained before daybreak. temperatures are supposed to hit 90 degrees today. upper 90s later. they hope what happened her reminds the rest of the area about the dangers. >> you can see the hills are dry in both places. kari, going to get

bob redell is live at the scene there, what is the latest. >>> good morning scott and kris. police are asking for your help trying to watch this person who has been shooting at cars along blossom hill road. yesterday we were told they know of four instances in the past couple months, each time the shooting taking place between 12:30 and 1:00 in the morning. june 2nd, someone shot a bullet at a car that grazed a driver. june 30th another vehicle was hit, and the past week a woman driver was hit by flying glass or bullet shrapnel. police say it does not appear to be any known connection between the shooter and his or her targets. they seem to be picking their targets at random. >> excuse me? they're just announcing it today? and this has been going on for a couple months? oh, nice. nice. like 20 police cars, and police officers standing on different properties. >> more resources for that area to catch the shooter as it only recently became aware that there was a connection. >> suspected child molester is in jail and police fear there may be more victims. e was wanted in connec
