we'll check in with news 4's darcy spencer in just a moment. she spoke to a witness who saw the man hit the ground after he shot himself. let's start with derek ward with new developments from that police update. derek. >> yeah. well this building is iconic. it's where the laws are made. it's not uncommon for people to come here to make a statement. usually those folks have a permit. that man came here. he had a gun. according to capitol police it was about 1:05 in the afternoon when the man walked up to the public area on the west front of the capitol and shot himself. no law enforcement officers fired during that shooting. we are told that he also had a suitcase and what's described as a roller rack with him. that led to fears that there may be a bomb. the bomb squad was called in and cleared those packages and -- people were on lockdown inside the capitol. he also had a sign with him. what did that sign say? we'll hear more on that from capitol police chief kim dine. >> he had a sign with him as well in addition to the backpack and roller ca

darcy spencer shows how it's igniting controversy again. >> reporter: a concerned citizen called policebout 5:00 this afternoon because the children were left unattended in silver spring. police took them to montgomery county child protective services in rockville. cps notified their parents. cps confirms that it's following up on reports that the children were left alone again today. we're still waiting to hear from the family. they made national headlines for their free-range style of parenting. cps began investigating the silver spring family back in december. that's after their 10-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter were found walking home alone from a playground. then in march the parents were found responsible for " "unsubstantiated child neglect." that means the case remains in the state data base for five years and then is ecopinged. the trick here -- ex-pinged. the trick here, that's if no additional reports are added to the file. there's no word on what the incident will mean for the case. the couple say they are responsible parents teaching their children self-reliance and t

news 4's darcy spencer is live from northeast d.c. what is he saying? >> reporter: well chris, that firefighter paramedic works right here at this fire station on rhode island avenue here in northeast washington. he says he kept thinking about this victim wondering how she was doing so today he visited her in the hospital. this photo shows the dramatic moment when d.c. firefighters worked to save the life of a disabled work who was trapped in a burning home in northeast. >> she was pretty critical. she had a lot of smoke inhalation. she was not looking good. >> reporter: that's firefighter paramedic zak on the ground intubating the 20-year-old woman. she was pulled from the home at 19th street unable to walk on her own. firefighter locket carried her out of the house. she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. one week after the call he visited the young woman in the hospital. she is doing much better breathing on her own. >> very emotional. she was crying and happy to see me all the at the same time. you know? i had to hold everything back no

darcy spencer shows us how a firefighter in new york made it happen. >> hello, honey, how is our pinup girl? the fellas in the ward appointed you as their pinup girl. >> reporter: sue ortman reads from one of the letters her father wrote to a woman, a pen pal, while he was serving in europe in world war ii. >> it had some bad news in it about my mom. her blood pressure seems to be on the mean side and won't come down. >> reporter: these letters reveal a side of her father, a part of his young life, she never knew. in fact he never talked about writing to a woman during the war. >> just that's the closest i can get to my father at this stage of the game. >> reporter: the letters were from robert ortman an army soldier who was in his early 20s. they were dated from 1943 to 1945, mailed from italy, france and germany to a young woman in new york who had 48 pen pals. >> this was a young, single guy over in europe, far away from home, and he was holding on. >> reporter: so how did she get her hands on this treasure of letters? it all started with a fire in a vacant building in new york city

darcy, what's the feeling on the streets this morning? >> reporter: well, oddly enough it feels very calm so far this morning. we're live right outside of city hall. if you take a look here, we have a national guard positioned here as well as married state police, some fencing has been erected around city hall here to protect the building. we're not sure if there was any kind of threat made to city hall or if this is simply being done as precaution to make sure that nothing does, in fact, happen. we've seen a lot of devastation since yesterday, like you said. this violence broke out after freddie gray's funeral. and various businesses were set on fire. there was looting. there was rioting. more than a dozen police officers were injured. some of them remain in the hospital this morning. a couple of dozen protesters were arrested. but a lot of criminal acts were conducted yesterday. and a lot of those people remain at large. people responsible for fires, people responsible for looting stores. so there's a lot of police work still to be done
