derek, where and when it will make landfall, seems like a moving target. so, you're in the path of the hurricane, what you expect right now, when expect worse to? come >> yeah, unfortunately, john, all of the ingredients are coming together for the perfect storm here, really the worst-case scenario for so many locations across the southwestern peninsula of florida. we've got tampa, about 150 kilometers to my north. and also the fort myers region, about 200 kilometers to my south and west. and if it's anything like the national hurricanes, the acting director of the national hurricane center said to my colleague jennifer gray early this morning, that people need to stop looking at the internet and wish that the storm is going away. because it is not. it is on our doorstep, and it's gigantic. it's growing in size as it approaches the peninsula. it's an extremely dangerous category 3, and now a forecast category 4 upon arrival. what's made this storm particularly interesting is that the wind field continues to expand. and let me tell you why that's important.

11 police have arrested a driver accused of killing a pedestrian yesterday in gilroy. 54 year old derek xin jue surrendered to police earlier today. police say his vehicle struck a man near ren avenue and else carried away again in gilroy. xin ju was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit and run another hit and run accident. yesterday in gilroy left the 92 year old man dead and a 16 year old boy in custody. police say the victim was on a mobility scooter. when he was hit by a car at first street and rent avenue. that was about 5 30 yesterday afternoon evening. witnesses were able to identify the suspect vehicle and police tracked down the driver using a newly installed camera system. the teenager now faces hit and run and vehicular manslaughter charges in plaster county. the mosquito fire continues to grow. tonight's update from cal fire shows that fire has now burned more than 63,000 acres. that's about 98 square miles containment is holding at 20% more than 6000. people remain under a vacuum ation orders tonight and we're hearing from an el dorado county deputy tonig

derek van dam is in bradenton tonight. and, derek, what are you seeing there?w, erin, we're seeing now the city streets go dark, aside from some generated lights from generators. i'm fearful for people tonight in the central portions of the florida peninsula with what they're going to experience as we are plunged into darkness. i think over 1.5 million customers are now without power. and that number is going to continue to climb as these ferocious, dare i say, violent winds continue to just batter this area. i know the eye has moved inland, but it still feels like the storm is feeding off the warm waters of the gulf of mexico, giving it some energy. because the eye is east of us now. it should be relaxed in these winds, but it has been relentless. maybe it's the slow nature of this storm. think about what it did when upon its arrival, another rapid intensification at the worst time possible, spinning itself up like a top and then releasing its energy in the form of cat 4 winds over 150 miles per hour. just an incredible gruesome and grueling day for the people
