let's get over to meteorologist derek van dam. f people going to be in some extreme temperatures today yeah. >> jessica and there's a climate influence to this as well the heat and humidity that we will feel. as we step outside today will be made three to five times more likely across the u.s us due to the effects and impacts of climate change that according to climate central, they're setting that nearly half of the u.s. population experiencing here that was influenced by climate change today. that is just impressive. i will look at these heat alerts stretching from coast to coast. we're talking over 100 million americans are under heat alerts, including many locations along the east coast of these are the actual temperatures forecast for today. but of course you factor in the humidity that's when it becomes bearable and very uncomfortable on top of that baked into this equation is the fact that we're still battling 93 active large wildfires. and with all this extra heat, there's more ability to hold water vapor in the atmosphere,

just derek van dam. derek, what are you tracking this morning? >> yeah.e tracking that line of thunderstorms, this kind of diminished overnight, but there's still the severe weather threat for the day today. here is a ring cam from someone's backyard in omaha, nebraska, just showing the power for winds that move through on this straight line wind event, very common during this time of year, is it kind of rides over a bowl of an area of high pressure. so it basically follows that path. you can see it right about there. and some of the resulting wind storm reports that have been in place now there's been over 500 reports it's of wind, hail, and even for 22 reports included in that these are impressive numbers. look at omaha clocking in a 90 mile per hour wind gusts yesterday, that's equivalent to a category one hurricanes. so powerful stuff enough to knock down some power lines. and of course trees he saw that a moment ago. that means 2000 or 2,800 hundred thousand people customers, i should say without power this morning. so here's our severe weather threa

let's get to our meteorologist, the weatherman, derek van dam. derek, good morning. what are you seeing out there? >> kasie, that was a really nice rainbow. you saw and, that's all because of the storms that move through minneapolis yesterday? yeah, there it is. what a stunning sight. and we like to see that because, you know, that just means that the weather is only going to get better from here, right? it's this line of storms that moved through minneapolis late last evening. and there was seven roll reports of wind and hail and fact over 120 reports with a swath of under storms that moved across the upper midwest, there were a few hail reports along the east coast as well. so today's severe weather threat extends across wisconsin and michigan and then moves to the mid-atlantic for the day tomorrow. a slight risk of large hail damaging winds can't rule out a tornado as well. this is what happens with the atmosphere gets too hot, right? we have heat warnings and heat advisories in effect for over 75 million americans stretching from the east coast through parts of t

let's go now to cnn's meteorologist derek van dam in the weather center. rek, that is astonishing video. what more have you learned about this landslide in alaska? >> yeah, jim, we're learning that a lot of rain fell in a very short amount of time and you add that into the topography of the mountains within this southern peninsula of alaska. and that of course can lead to a failing slope of a mountain sides. so officially, the kachka, an airport received about two-and-a-half inches in a 24 hour period, but there our reports and the national weather service that the mountain ranges here across the ketchikan mountains there are about 3,000 feet high at they received between eight to nine inches of rainfall in roughly a 30 hour period. that's a lot of rain. and of course, where does that rain go well, it travels down the slopes and sometimes it can cause these slope failures don't as a landslide, they happen in all us states. but it is the most steep slopes that are the most vulnerable. so if we start building our households here along the slopes of these larg

officials fear another landslide could cause even more destruction nearby, joining us now is cnn's derek van dam, who's got some of the details for us, so derek, can you tell us what is happening there in alaska well, first and foremost, the ketchup can range the mountain range that lines this part of the alaskan peninsula received between eight to nine inches of rain at about a 30 hour period the airport actually were clocking in about two-and-a-half inches of rain, but there's a lot of factors that have to come together for a landslide or mudslide to occur? >> want you to take note of this picture of the actual landslide, the debris field at the bottom, the houses that are extremely vulnerable and the topography or the mountain ranges in the background. so this is the area that is most vulnerable to build our homes on. right? >> and just so you know, mudslides and landslides can occur in all 50 u.s. states. but the steepest slopes or where the most vulnerable and the most likely locations for these to occur, they can travel 20 miles per hour even faster than that. so faster than the human can

let's get right to derek van dam in the weather center for the latest on that derek yeah. >> john, i'm so glad that the storm is now making landfall because that means it's losing its energy source, which is the warm waters of the eastern gulf of mexico. so it's taking away its opportunity to strengthen the wins. but as you mentioned, and it's the rain that is going to be the big factor when the history books are written. and we look back at the storm that will certainly be the big story because there is a prolific amount of rain as lisa just mentioned, coming, and it's already fallen as well. here's a look at the storm surge. the next couple of hours we still have to contend with this as we push up the waters from the very shallow gulf of mexico into the big bend we like to call this the catcher's mitt and you can exactly see why hurricane idalia from last year, just a few miles away from where debby just made landfall and so we're seeing some of those impressive storm surge totals near cedar key, about six feet right now. now the eyewall just crossed the 50% of that eyewall just cros

this is a once in a thousand-year potential rain ball of that all right cnn meteorologist derek van dam is with us now. we are seeing a lot of rain. derek yeah, it's hard to believe that charleston just a few short days could have more than half their entire annual rainfall budget. >> just in a few days. and it's all because of the remnants of debby here which are just bringing it a firehose of water onto the south carolina coast. i mean, you can follow it all the way back into the ocean. that was aimed right at charleston earlier this morning. there's a bit of a reprieve, but more rain will certainly set up behind it. and we've got our tornado threat as well. remember that firehose of water as creating inland flooding. but that's working against the onshore we're flow which is creating a storm surge component. so the water has nowhere to go, but up that is why charleston, particularly as so vulnerable to flooding. now i want to show you just this influence along the entire eastern seaboard going forward, we've got a cold front that's going to sweep down from the northwest it's going to

cnn's derek van dam has this report after facing unusually low levels of rain, people in the northern mexican state of chihuahua are waiting for storm clouds. the much needed rain could refill dried out dams, water wells and lagoons. but so far they've had no luck known for its dry or semi dry climate. mexico's largest state has seen minimal rainfall in recent years and has been suffering from drought since february. this has led to dams drying up and becoming infested with dead fish and so alito it is unusual. i have never seen this down like this without water. we see total devastation that nature is punishing less well some parts of mexico came out of drought in july. >> the national water commission reports that 100% of chihuahua remains in drought 54% of the state i in extreme e drought and 11% in exceptional drought. the highest level with a little amount of wet mud that remains cattle from nearby farms come to cool off. but the scarce water available has left farmers suffering are enabled to irrigate their crops the levels of the agricultural wells are dropping. this year. we h

this weekend along the east coast of the united states, cnn meteorologist derek van dam is with us now. what is the biggest danger as we speak right now, we see it churning out there in the atlantic yes sara so we're about two or three hours away from tropical storm force winds impacting the island of bermuda. but the very sheer fact that this storm has found bermuda and the very vast open ocean waters of the western atlantic is saying something that's only roughly about 20 miles long and at its widest is about 1.75 miles it's wide. at this house is about 65,000 people and recovers brought an area of roughly 20 square miles. so very small, we call that a needle in a haystack, but yet it is still on a track to impact bermuda with some of its strongest winds, which are cranking at around 100 miles per hour near the center of the storm currently, ernesto is about 300 miles to the south southwest of bermuda. that's why we have hurricane warnings in place. but think about this tropical tropical-storm-force winds extend about 265 miles from the center. so it won't take long for those wins to

let's get to derek van dam for us this morning. derek, good morning.seeing out there yeah. >> dramatic video is they're coming out of connecticut within the past 12 hours. kasie, it's still raining in some portions of eastern connecticut. heaviest rain right now, located across the eastern sections of long island where a flash flood warning has been extended and see another heavy rain band about to impact. the 195 corridor 95 corridor will be extremely wet this morning. so do take care rainfall radar estimates upwards of ten inches. this is some one and 200 year event for monroe can get connecticut, so southwestern connecticut getting hit especially hard? there's that flash flood warning with a shading of red is located and we still have our flood warnings in place from the rain that took place yesterday. unfortunately, there's more precipitation in this forecast, so that could exacerbate some of the flooding at the local rivers and some of the streams as well. that's why we have a slight risk of flash flooding. and by the way, this is not associated d

so we'll see in a meteorologist derek van dam joins us now, live from atlanta with the latest and derek tell us what we can expect in the coming hours. >> max look, when we're seeing videos of storm surge from hurricane debby already along that west coast of the florida peninsula. this is concerning for me because it doesn't take much to push up that very shallow nature of the water. here's what it looks like overnight in clearwater, florida, well away from the center of debby, we saw flooding imagery coming out of fort myers beach. remember that area was hit so hard by ian back in september of 2022. the bulk of the storm surge that is going to inundate six to ten feet of normally dry by water right near the catcher's mitt of the florida peninsula. that's where all the water from the gulf of mexico will be pushed up in advance of this approaching tropical system, which is nearing landfall as we speak. so basically cedar key to the north and west, even tampa bay. and where we've got some of our reporters positioned as well currently right now, hurricane debby, a category 180 miles per ho

. >> derek van dam joins us now. and as we heard that direct the storm is stalling it, slowing down, but of course not over yet. >> yeah, christina, i think that when we look at the storm maybe a week from now, the major story is still yet to be written more than likely going to be the flooding that will occur from this storm. and you heard isabel talk about it. it's really the southeastern us, particularly the coastal areas of georgia and into south carolina that we're concerned about. here's what it looked like on tybee island, georgia, just off the coastline of the state of georgia. and here's a look at the latest radar. you can still see that counter counterclockwise spin that's what's leftover of debby. and so that low pressure, the actual center of the storm has moved offshore just yet, but it is anticipated to do who and i want you to notice what it's doing starting to track in some of these, what we call tropical feeder bands over the same locations one after another, after another. and this is that extended

hurricane could become a major cat-3 as soon as today, as soon as tomorrow, let's get over to cnn's derek van damsly been tracking this very closely for us. what are you seeing with this storm and the threat that it has and is now posing well, the national hurricane center still explicitly forecast seeing a major category three hurricane on its approach to bermuda with some slight weakening expected through the weekend. >> i'll take you through the exact forecast in just one moment, but this is what six to ten inches of rain can do to some of the roadways? in puerto rico. it was a very difficult 24 hours. we all know from previous hurricanes that the power grid within puerto rico is extremely vulnerable. so with what was a tropical storm yesterday or masto as it moved north of puerto rico, it was capable of knocking out nearly a half 1 million customers. and that's still without power and that's just of course gets very difficult because the heat will start to build in behind the system. there's a lot of dry air in ernesto, so it's not quite forming the center of the eye that we would see in a ra
