derrick ward has more on the new security concerns that have come about. derrick, good morning to you >> reporter: good morning. there's some security concerns. when hughes appears in court later today he'll be charged under title 49 of the united states code, that deals with transportation issues. as you can say, this is indeed one. look at the video from yesterday. it was about 1:30 when hughes made the last leg of his trip from gettysburg pennsylvania -- he actually started in florida. he drove his gyrocopter up from florida to gettysburg pennsylvania. flew about 45 miles per hour at treetop level all the way here to the west front of the capitol. now, the secret service had interviewed hughes in florida at least twice after he went public with information indicating that he intended to do something like this. he was meticulous about it. he was aware of the security here and of the no fly zone apparently. he said he chose this gyrocopter as opposed to a fixed wing a more airplane like piece of aircraft because that might have posed more of a threat. but

news4's derrick ward just spoke to the victim's mother.lains why. >> reporter: rick warrick and joule pearce were going to get married. it was a dark rainy night where their dreams came to an end. it was on a stretch of the parkway near route 197. 38-year-old rick warrick and 28-year-old jule pearce were struck as warrick changed a tire on the side of the road. he died pearce was badly hurt the driver left the scene. >> we just found out later that he knew he hit someone. we was told he had put the car in the shop the very next day. >> reporter: warrick's mother speaking of that driver 73-year-old earl teeter, a registered u.s. marshal facing charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and reckless driving. police located him two weeks after the crash by tracing parts of his van left on the scene after the fatal impact. >> i'm pleased about finding out that they found the person that did it. but i'm not pleased what with the prosecutor's decision. >> reporter: she's troubled with the charges. >> we're talking about my son. >> reporter

derrick ward is on to bep of the story. >> reporter: there is new information. of where we are. we are here in the 500 block of 62nd place just on the eat side of eastern avenue across from prince george's county line. police have been here some 12 hours after the beginning of an investigation into a murder. about 10:27 last night police responded to the 500 block of 62nd place for the report of gunfire. when they got here they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. that man had been shot in the chest, pronounced dead on the scene. this has been a crime scene since that time. prince george's county police along with the police from the city of seat pleasant are investigating this incident now. we don't have any identification on the victim, whether or not he lived in the area or had any connection at all. he believe this happened in an area just between the apartment complex and the discount mart there, with the front on eastern avenue. now, police are asking for anyone who might have information about what went on here to get in touch with prince g

what are you seeing derrick? >> reporter: well, all is quiet on the southwestern water front now, but come tomorrow there will be a lot of activity down here. of course the highlight of that activity will be fireworks. there will be the fireworks festival it gets under way at about 8:30. we're told rain or shine. may actually be rain. but it's still going to do it anyway. but that will be the culmination of a day of events here on the southwest water front. it will feature bands of all kind military blue jazz blue grass, some japanese drumming and dancing of course keeping with the theme of the festival lots of food. got to have the food. and dragon boat excursions. lots of things to do. and they are asking you to take public transportation if you're going to come down to the events here on the southwest waterfront. a good idea would be to take the green line to the water front station or orange or blue lines to l'enfant plaza and washington done. walk down. and taking advantage of the magnificent water front. so

derrick ward is live along the planned route in manassas battlefield park with more. >> reporter: good could learn today whether that is the case and take a look behind me this, is sudley road as it cuts through battlefield park. and this would go away and be replaced by that new connector that you talked about. take a look,s's a 10 mile stretch, skirts the western end of the park connecting prince william and allow tonloudoun counties. local officials have stepped back on some of the processes that need to happen for this to go ahead. and people are saying that means that this isn't going to happen. or about it is it will take $400 million of local money, money they just don't have. what we will know later today as lawmakers get together and announce what they are calling a major road block in this project. now, of course people say that this would alleviate traffic and make that commute a lot easier but the worry is that it would also create more urban sprawl. that battle will be fought on the later today. we hope to find out what it means. we are live here at manassas battlefield pa

speaking of some backups today, and some traffic changes, derrick ward is in southeast washington with tunnel project that could cause an issue throughout the next couple of months, actually. >> reporter: indeed, it will. once it gets underway. where's the tunnel it's pretty much beneath our feet. it runs parallel to 695. if you want to know what the construction is there's some tell tale signs in the streets. this marks some electrical lines and talk about a vault. an underground space that's here. when you see it marked off, that means the construction is coming. it's relocating utilities around a major piece of railroad infrastructure. this tunnel used to carry railroad tracks to a train station that was on the mall before the days of union station. it has remained an important part of csx lines facilitating train commerce all up and down the east coast. you might say it's the i-95 of rail lines, but it needs an upgrade. they're going to be upgrading the tunnels for safety and also just relocating some of the tracks and making them more efficient. you're going to see some lane closu
