i think the -- while will hurd is an important voice to add, i think the rules are fine. some of the candidates, i'm not just talking about will hurd, a lot of the candidates need to take a hard look at where they stand, what their chances are and whether they are diluting the republican anti-trump vote or they're helping to build up an alternative. i think everybody deserves their chance to make their case. but especially after this debate, if you're still mired in 1% or even 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, you need to think about getting out. you need to think about can we credibly or can we rally around one single credible alternative to donald trump? we can't allow what happened in 2016 where the votes were divided up and donald trump benefitted from it. so i hope that some of the people get their chance, if it is not working out for them, they sooner rather than later show themselves out. >> i'm sure every single one of them wants to be the alternative and saying why is that guy the person we should be rallying around? we'll see if the debate makes a big difference. i want to dive d

joining me now is former republican congressman, will hurd , congressman, great to see you. thanks so much. let's get right to what's happening with the trump campaign. they claim that since he was booked and had his mug shot taken, last week, that the campaign has raised $7.1 million. let me ask you, what you think, is he being strength and in all of this? are you concerned about that? >> well, first off, he's going to need more than $7 million to stay out of reason. i made it very clear that donald trump is running for office to stay out of reason. three dollars out of four dollars that he raises is going to the legal defense funds and now that you have so many people in his orbit, that don't have lawyers or don't have the money to pay for lawyers like rudy giuliani, you could potentially start seeing some of them flip like in the case for the classified documents, so the people, donald trump has loyal followers, they will follow him no matter what, and regardless of what may or may not happen, what i have to remind some of my friends, republican friends, is that, who is t

christie, hutchinson and hurd have been the only to criticize trump directly. the rest, fingers to the wind, won't step out against trump until the base tells them the coast is clear. yet, a new a.p. poll says 69% of americans overall say they don't want trump to run again. by the way, take a look at that other number, because that's exceeded by the 75% who say they don't want biden to run again. among republicans, according to the same poll, nearly two-thirds or 63% now say they want the former president to run again. that's actually up from the 55% who said the same thing in april. and 70% of republicans now say they've got a favorable opinion of a man who's four times indicted up from 60% just two months ago. think about that for a moment. donald trump has seen a 10% increase in favorability of republicans after being criminally charged for allegedly taking nuclear secrets to his private residence, using false claims of voter fraud to pressure officials to overturn results, and falsifying business records to hide a hush money payment to a porn star with whom

as somebody who is engrained in republican politics, you look at the range will hurd has made clear frombe a central issue for him. other candidates higher up in the polls, still about 30 points down, have had a different posture. the different posture that befuddles people, they are clearly seeing something that says don't go down that path. >> the campaigns have done their research and for whatever reason they choose to not say the truth and to not call it out for what it is. this is not normal. the man has been indicted four times. and he's about to release his report on monday further proving that he won the election. it really does call into question his sense of judgment, his character is on display here as far as being indicted four times. i was disappointed by tim scott's reaction. it's not surprising that the campaigns are looking for people to target their weaponization because they are going to point out things like stacey abrams not conceding and the fani willis, her not being able to question jones because of a fundraiser for him. they are going to call on to these things to

republican presidential candidates with the exception of chris christie, asa hutchinson, and will hurd, attacking the justice department instead of talking about the allegations made in the indictment. what's your response? >> it's not my response, i'm not responding to them, i'm speaking, as i always have, with or without them. the rule of the law is central to our democracy. the fact that the former president was always attacking the rule of law in our country, and now these -- these guys are parroting that. shame on them. shame on them. but, again, let's not talk about them. let's just talk about our constitution, our country, our respect of the rule of law. and by the way, while he was undermining the rouule of law, was undermining a pillar of our democracy. part of the first amendment to the constitution, freedom of the press. so if he can diminish the role of the press, and he can diminish the role of the rule of law in our country, we're on a path that is not a good one for our democracy. so let's not spend too much time on them. let's spend time on where we need to be as a coun

>> reporter: hurd is not the only one who suffered boos on the campaign trail. christie, of course, has also faced the same kinds of crowds and our poll explains why. our latest poll in iowa shows the wave that this republican party has really been remade in trump's image and ideology. the fact that a majority of them don't think that he did anything significantly criminal, despite the four indictments, the fact they think he won an election that he lost in 2020, it is a reminder for a lot of these rivals of why they're not going after him on the things like the indictment despite the fact it feels like a bit odd for all of us who ask these candidates questions about trump, in any other world, they would be going at their chief rival. in in one, they're afraid to alienate his mistakes. >> ali vitali, thank you very much. other than chris christie, asa hutchinson and will hurd, most republican candidates have used kid glovesald trump. we're starting to see some of this shift a little bit. for example, when mike pence qualified for the debate, a spokesperson said, quote, hopefully former president trump has the courage to show up, unquote. how do you see this all shaking out? do you think desantis, pence and others are going to start more aggressively making the case against donald trump? >> i do. in fact, desantis on the campaign trail in iowa and his nbc interview have been a little more aggressive. they're doing it differently, though. when you listen to will hurd, when you listen to chris christie, they're very aggressive in their attacking. i actually think that does more harm than good. it brings his reporters to support him. they're perceived of being to the left of everyone else any way. desantis, their attacks aren't reassuring to supporters, but they're doing it more tackfully with an overarching theme of how terrible the man is. they're stepping on rakes as opposed to his character in general. i

if it's nikki haley, will hurd, tim scott, that's more challenging for the president. >> an argument tim scott makes, he can get tngs done and he can beat joe biden. when "the new york times" asked publican likely voters that, they believe that trump would be able tbe desantis when it came to gettg things done 67-22%. and on the ability to beat biden, they gave trump 58% and desantis 28%. these are the two arguments he's been making on the campaign trail. >> this poll is devastating for desantis in every possible way, including the meme who say they're favorably inclined to -- his favorable number was 56%. among those people, donald trump still beat him 49-48. i mean, it's a pretty tough road for him to get through. >> not even just those issues. it's also about trump and his legal exposure. there were republicans, 22%, i believe, when they were looking at the trump/desantis head-to-head matchup that said even if they believe trump committed serious federal crimes that they would still pick him over desantis. you're a republican. what does that say about where republican voters are.
