joining me now from roseburg, oregon, msnbc's jacob soboroff. jacob? >> reporter: kate, we expect to see president obama depart eugene, oregon, and fly past right about here in roseburg on marine one to meet with families of victims. there are people upset about what the president had to say about the gun control in the wake of the shooting. including this gentleman. take a look. kate, you know, i'm not sure we have that clip but it was an organizer of the protest and joined by what we're told is hundreds of other people out protesting the president. the white house responded to these protests talking about president obama's trip in these terms. josh earnest said yesterday the president made clear the visit to spend time with the families of those who are so deeply affected by this terrible tragedy and this statement has not tempered sort of the outpouring of anger toward the president, kate. these protesters doing the best they can to make sure that the president sees them on the way into town today. >> we lined up the sound bite you were trying to go

jacob soboroff with us live in roseburg, oregon. thank you very much. we will have the latest on today's mass shooting in oregon after the break. >>> we've got some new information on the deadly shooting in oregon. law enforcement officials tell nbc news the shooter, who is deceased was 26-year-old chris harper mercer. they say he was not a student at umpqua community college. they're trying to figure out his connection to the school. multiple law enforcement sources also tell nbc news a total of four firearms were recovered on the scene. three handguns and a long gun similar to an ar-style rifle. police say the massacre left ten dead and seven wounded at umpqua community college in roseburg, oregon which is about three hours south of portland. late this afternoon president obama mourned the dead and delivered a blistering call to prevent such tragedies in the future appealing to voters to hold lawmakers who refuse to act accountable. that's all we have for right now. that's all the for the evening. the rachel maddow show will start with continuing cove

but back out to roseburg and to jacob soboroff that's been reporting to us.were listening to the statements from one of the families of one of the survivors cheyenne fitzgerald. >> that's right. the family members there consistented of cheyenne's mother, cousins of cheyenne. it's extraordinary to hear about a 16-year-old that was enrolled locally in community college. of course as the family stated cheyenne's going to be giving her story in due time and on her terms. but, you know, clearly this is a very happy moment for the family to be able to come out and report back to the public that cheyenne is doing okay. >> jacob, you also have some new information on the suspect, the shooter. >> that's right. we just heard our team did here at the police station here, the police and fire station, that the shooter was actually pronounced dead at the scene, on the scene at umpqua community college. now, that contradicts some reports that are out there saying the shooter may have died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. that's the first that we've heard of it. b

. >> jacob soboroff, thank you. sadly shootings in american communities are more common. there have been 142 incidents which a gun was fired on a school campus in this country since the massacre in newtown in december of 2012. this is the fourth shooting on a college campus just since the start of this school year in august. we get details from our justice correspondent pete williams. >> reporter: the scene unfolding in oregon has become all too familiar. another mass shooting again on a school campus. it's actually the 41st school shooting just this year. with gun fire on campuses nationwide in big cities and like today, small communities. until today, those shootings claimed the lives of nine people. as before, calls for more gun control or better mental health outreach that brought only minor changes. >> we are going to line up on two different sides. gun control and mental health and wind up wringing our hands one more time while we bury our dead. >> reporter: one thing that changed is the nature of the police response, much more active instead of waiting for heavily-

msnbc correspondent jacob soboroff is in roseburg this morning. cting from the president's visit today? >> reporter: good morning, jose. you know, we're expecting a very emotional day on several levels. on one level, a really reflective, personal, private time between the president and the family members of the victims, families and some of the survivors of the shooting here in roseburg. but we're also expecting what could be sizable protests of the president after his call for gun control, and that is because, jose, this area values guns. even a family of one of the survivors, as i found out. in the wake of the shooting at um with community college, there's been a nationwide conversation about guns and gun rights and gun control. so, i came up to long ranch. a lot of locals come up here hunting, and my tour guide is dennis acton. his niece, cheyenne fitzgerald, is a survivor of the shooting. how long have you been hunting in this area? >> i've hunted douglas county now for 52 years. >> reporter: 52 years. >> 52. >> reporter: oh, look, there's a de
