i'm jon kelley. >>> i'm laura garcia cannon. >> we begin with breaking news in east bay where the search is on for a gunman that opened fire killing two people. the shooting shut down all northbound lanes for several hours. >> that's where christie smith is and she has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the chp looking for the shooters this morning and so are oakland police after a horrible scene. drivers say they thought there was some sort of backup, lasted for ten minutes. then, they thought maybe there was a ped down on the freeway, because it looked like a man just laying down on interstate 880 near the jackson street on ramp. then, they realized that someone had been shot. the chp tells us two men were traveling in a white portia. they were shot late thursday around 10:35. the driver died in the car. that started with several 911 calls with both a collision and a shooting. investigators weren't sure if this happened on the ramp or the freeway northbound. fre the freeway was closed for hours that the police and chp investigated. >> both agencies responded out. when we got on sce

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live with more. >> reporter: talk about a close call. normally firefighters are called to help others. this time at least three of them who were inside actually had to help themselves, hit the deck and run for cover as bullets shatter the front window where they park their fire trucks inside. the bullets -- this was an exit. the bullets came from the opposite side of the firehouse and may actually hit a house across the street. fortunately, though, no firefighters were hurt in all of this. that happened about 9:00 last night at station 18 on 50th avenue in east oakland. half a mile away, a man was shot and killed in a hail of gunfire over on melrose avenue. he was taken to highland hospital where he died. i'm told the detector system picked up two gun shots fired in the area. no one arrested in th

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in palo alto with more details on this murder investigation. good morning. >> reporter: an international warrant was issued for kevin dahlgren accused of killing a family of four overseas. a czech television station is reporting that he is actually the nephew of the parents that were killed. police in the czech republic released a photo of the 21-year-old who has a facebook page that says he is from palo alto but is living abroad. he was on the run thursday. firefighters went to a home near pr prague and found a couple and their two sons inside. they realized quickly a violent crime had likely been committed. the fire didn't damage the home very much at all. neighbors say he had only been in the area for a few months. police had asked for the public's help in finding dahlgren. then, p

i'm jon kelley. let's get you to breaking news on the peninsula. the chopper live in redwood city. just at huge residential fire right now. this is a residential area, we have confirmed. this is happening right across the street from fair oaks elementary school. this one recently jumped up to a three-alarm fire. >> we saw the flames leaping from the building there. fair oaks and oakside avenue in redwood city. take a look at the smoke as well. the winds are out in that area. making it tougher for firefighters to get a handle on this one. we first started covering this in the 5:00 hour. but two to three alarms now as the chopper shot zooms out a little bit. you can see the smoke billowing in the air. it starts in a car port in the area there. and spread to the homes above. >> again, it's across the street from the elementary school. that being fair oaks elementary. we have scott mcgcgrew working that now. >> as well as that, we have bob redell head to get scene. he's going to be there in moment >> that looks like a rough one. >> they continue to tackle that. >>> in the meantime, spr

. >>> i'm jon kelley. we have breaking news in the south bay to tell you about. an armed robbery and police chase ending with the suspect crashing right into a wall. police on the scene at the intersection of silver creek and yerba buena, near highway 101 where "today in the bay's" bob redell just talked to the officers. what are you hearing? >> reporter: good morning. san jose police believe they finally caught the woman they have been looking for for at least a month in connection with a couple of armed robberies of a couple of 7 elevens a couple months ago. she did the same thing but she got caught this time. she crashed her stolen bmw during a chase that they tell us hit speeds of 75-80 miles an hour. police have arrested her along with her two passengers. her two passengers, a man and a pregnant woman. all three taken to the hospital as a precaution. police tell us that earlier this morning, she used an eight-inch, 22 revolver to rob a 7-eleven at kirk and foxworthy. they immediately expected it was the same woman that robbed them two months ago. during thos

i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. good morning everyone. we want to update you on breaking news out of the north bay where we continue to keep an eye on four separate fires in napa and sonoma counties. this is video of one of the fires burning off silverado trail. we got off the phone with cal fire who is telling us it's about 40% contained and around 50 acres have burned so far. the crews there are hoping to have that fire fully contained by sometime this afternoon. three other fires right now burning out of control near yellow jacket ranch road in sonoma. so far 200 ache verse burned there. crew there is battling very strong winds this morning, making it very tough to put those flames out. right now it's so windy our chopper not able to fly over the scene to bring you the latest pictures. people living as far south as san francisco reported they're able to smell smoke in the air. we'll be on this one and update you all morning long. >>> we want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. how long will it last? >> it's in effect until

i'm jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news. a frantic search for a stabbing suspect near the park. today's marla tallez got to the scene very quickly near lee and kurt ner. >> reporter: within the last 15 minutes, this breaking news has wrapped up out here. this is door park behind me. as you mentioned, this is near lee and kurtner in. cambrain district. this was surrounded by san jose police, with patrol cars cordoning off each corner, their lights shining on the park looking for a stabbing suspect. at 1:15, a man stabbed another man. the officer on scene wouldn't tell me specifically where. in the last three hours, they have been searching for this suspect. in the last 15 minutes, they have found this person after conducting a yard to yard search. as for the rick victim, the other man he stabbed, he was taken to regional medical center with nonlife threatening injuries. the scene has wrapped up. the patrol cars have gone on their way. >>> we'll follow that all morning long. right now, let's check some things out in the weathe

. >> i'm jon kelley. we continue following developing news out of southern california where a massive wild fire continues burning out of control in ventura county. 15 homes have been damaged and 2000 more have been threat nd. annette from our sister station in los angeles, she has the latest. >>> good morning, guys. pacific coast highway will remain closed until firefighters are able to get a handle on the blaze. right now, we are on pch just north of deer creek. we have been out here for the next hour or so. it has been interesting to see these flames right up there and flaring up and dying down as the fire continues raging through the night, traveling where it originally started until it reached the malibu shoreline where it continues to burn out of control at this point. close to 1,000 firefighters are on the ground battling the blaze, working on protecting structures. nearly 2000 homes have been threatened by the flames. so far, none have been destroyed. since water dropping aircraft cannot be used at

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in station 18 with a look at all the damage there and a link to another overnight crime. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you, jon. these firefighters knew exactly what that sound was. it was unmistakable. gunfire piercing the window of this firestation. this is firestation number 18. the window is where the bullets actually exited, hit another building across the street. we just shot some video from the rear of the firestation on 50th avenue here in east oakland. a window is out on the roll-up door in the back. firefighter i spoke with off camera this morning tells me they had just returned from a call, three of them, and were working inside when the glass just shattered. all three of them had to run. one of them told me it sounded like at least 50 rounds going off outside rattled nerves but otherwise those firefighters were unhar

i'm jon kelley. i'm laura garcia cannon. this morning at daybreak, the search continues for a young girl from the bay area missing since mother's day. hundreds of volunteers getting ready to fan out in clear lake looking for 9-year-old mikaela lynch. christie smith joins us from san francisco. you have new details about the search? >> reporter: good morning. we are told that search should pick up some time around 7:00 this morning. today, more than 100 volunteers and police officers helping to find mikaela lynch. they may widen their search area trying to find her. mikaela is nine years old and has autism. family members told police the little girl has the mental capacity of a 1-year-old and cannot speak. she disappeared sunday afternoon while playing in the family's highland harbor vacation area. she had been playing with her brother in the yard and may have wondered off. volunteers and police have searched. they posted fliers all around. they have specifically looked along cash creek. police say she doesn't know how to swi
