good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. there's word of an 11th hour deal. healther holmes is live in concord now with what she's learned. >> reporter: there's guarded jubilation right now just ten minutes ago the school board voted 5-0 not to close any additional schools. that's what these parents and teachers had been hoping for. but they weren't sure this will be the outcome into tonight's meeting. melissa is lobbying hard to keep her school from closing. >> i don't know what i would do. i have a kid who's registered for kindergarten and i have another one and i don't know what i would do. >> reporter: silverwood elementary is slated for possible closure. but late tonight came this from the superintendent. >> staff recommending that we don't close any more schools. >> reporter: instead other options, like redrawing boundarys to save on transportation costs. ideas that can get them to their goal. >> i think at least for now we can potentially hold off and not do anything right now. >> reporter: but eberhart stresses this might only be a temporary solution.

. >>> good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville.n francisco's emphasis on saving water is actually making the city smell. new at 6:00 tonight, ktvu's david stevenson live with the simple but powerful solution being used to get rid of the stink. >> san francisco's city officials say this is the solution to a smelly problem. even on this wet and windy afternoon, san franciscans say they could smell it. >> especially over there. >> i think about it as the griney sea smell but it's something else. >> reporter: to put out the smell, the city will buy 27 million pounds of bleach from tanks such as this one into the city's vast sewage system. >> it is a metered pump, depending on the flow. the flow will get higher as needed. we can inject it and get more in. >> reporter: how often is the bleach used, this over the counter bleach is 6%. the one used in the sewers is 12%. the use of low flow toilet means there's less water in the sewers to reduce the stench. >> we go from 7-gallon flush to a one gallon flush, it does have an effect. before i

. >> i'm in for julie haener. the location was bad, timing made it worse. bart commuters endured delays because of debris on the tracks just east of the trans bay tube. pictures of the metal strip that stopped the trains. jana? >> reporter: to make matters worse, it was raining and windy like it is right now, but bart officials tell me it was up there on those tracks heading into san francisco, just past this west oakland bart station where they found the debris, just a small bit of metal that caused quite a bit of disruption. passengers were left confused and waiting on platforms as bart trains came to a complete halt. service was shut down between san francisco and the west oakland bart stations, the reason, a train operator spotted metal debris on the tracks. >> the train passed through, we decided we needed to inspect and we were not comfortable enough in continuing surface, which is why we shut down the track in both directions. >> reporter: passengers were packed on to buses, many scrambled for cell phones to make arrangements or alert family and frie

good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. this system is bringing rain to the area, snow to the mountains and high winds everywhere in the area. jana katsuyama live in the sierra, chief meteorologist bill martin has the latest on the system's track. but we begin with ken wayne. >> reporter: we're in the embarcadero, the brick window you see behind me has sandbags reason why. the bay waters have been splashing over the sidewalks here over the embarcadero. at one point we had a truck that splashed a good wave. the big problem is a wind. wind warnings. so far the action has been north of the bay bridge. this is how the drive looked on highway 101 in sonoma county. in santa rosa a fallen tree blocks the onramp from 101 to highway 12 and the chp shut down the ramp for almost a half hour while the tree was cleared. in petaluma we found this at&t crew clearing tree limbs from power lines trying to keep branches from cutting off service. flags and wind socks whipped in the breeze and a pilot said he was expecting a challenging flight

. >> i'm julie haener. rain returns to the bay area causing problems on the road tonight. officers have been running from one accident to the next. bill martin is tracking the wet weather, but we start with ktvu channel 2 ken wayne where the chp has been responding to dozens of accidents, ken? >> reporter: crazy, that's how one highway patrol officer describes driving conditions here as officers race from one emergency call to another. the chp says its officers responded to more than 40 crashes aacross zsa know ma -- across sonoma county. this is one of them. two people were hurt in this crash. the chp shut down the highway for about an hour while the wreckage was cleared. >> too much rain and too much speed. give extra space between you and the car in front of you. >> reporter: this rollover crash happened late today. the driver escaped injury after his toyota landed on its top. officers had little time for traffic enforcement as they responded to crash after crash. >> all day long, offers finish up one call and have to respond to another. >> reporter: high wind warnings

. >> and i'm julie haener.ay's rain is the beginning of a wet weekend or week around the bay area. and right now heavy rain and strong winds are heading our way. ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin has a look at what to expect. >> we're watching showers on the afternoon commute. it's not a heavy rain as it has been all day but enough to slow the afternoon commute. on the major freeways, we've got wet roadways and scattered sprinkles, drizzle and some showers. mostly drizzle right now. there's the richmond bridge, it's wet across the span. you've got wet conditions and south towards san jose, hayward out towards redwood city, you have scattered showers. let me show you what i'm tracking. the system as you see, it flies by. in the pacific we have a bunch of storms headed your way. i'll have all the details. >>> it just started moments ago, a huge pillow fight in san francisco and this year there is some concern because of all the wet weather there could be a big mess once that pillow fight is over. jana katsuy

. >> and i'm julie haener, as we showed you just moments ago air force one just touched down at sfo, president obama is now in the bay area for a one night stop. he's meeting with silican valley executive as little bit later tonight. david stevenson joins us now for more on the presidential visit, david. >> you can see air force one just right there behind me. the president taxied in and came off the plane just about 20 minutes ago. he came in under cloudy but dry skies for a moment here. he was greeted by a number of notables here in san francisco including lieutenant governor gavin newsom. the current mayor of san francisco ed lee and attorney general harris. right there you can see some pictures of the plane coming in to be followed by the president walking down the steps of air force one. he is in town to meet with and dine with a number of silican valley well known ceos including the head of getter, or oracle with steve jobs. he's going to be in town for a very short amount of time. he is set to talk to those notables this evening about issues close to his heart including new jo
