kraig debro joins us more from martinez. good afternoon, kraig. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. you will see how tight that security is in just a few seconds. the second day of this preliminary hearing on a case that's sickened anybody that heard about it. a 16-year-old girl is gang high pressure raped after a high school dance and now a judge will decide if there's enough evidence for a trial. today, and officer testified for the prosecution, the defendants' side tried to get him to admit that his handling of the evidence compromised the case. >> it's not okay. hopefully, these interest lessons that will be learned from the younger students to see that this kind of behavior really has consequences. >> reporter: he was the first richmond officer on the scene after admitting under questioning that handling and collecting evidence is important, the attorney then tried to make a case that his handling of the victim's walkie- talkie and i.d. badge, the only evidence he handled, was inconsistent with protocol. seven men, a teenager, are charged with beating, raping and robbing a 16-y

kraig debro joins us now with more. good afternoon, kraig. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. the actual award was awarded to the church in september. the timing of today's announcement of the award of the grant was merely coincidental with yesterday's tragedy but both did happen at the same place, east oakland's allen temple baptist church, a man released from prison about a month earlier was shot in the head underneath a church cross. we're more serious about this as a result of the tragedy. >> reporter: this morning allen temple baptist church announced it had received a $430,000 grant from the california endowment. the money will be used to promote violence prevention and help justice in richmond and oakland. the man shot and killed here yesterday, was taking g.e.d. classes at allen temple in oakland but lived in richmond. the leadership of the church says they will reach thousands of people by just talking to a few pastors. >> >> so each of those 20 pastors represents maybe 300, 400, 500 people each, maybe more. >> reporter: it's not just pastors who will benefit from the

ktvu's kraig debro joins us now with more on the story. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. it happened right here. as you said just the latest in a series ovens dents. not only involving people but pets as well. i felt happened on tuesday evening around 6:15 police say a 19-year-old man was stabbed twice in the back. police say the assailant came up from behind the teenager to carry out the attack. there's only a vague description of the attacker. a white male between the ages of 30 and 50. just as scary on sunday a man walking his dog found a body and severed arm on the south side of the polo field at middle and martin luther king, jr. drives. the area is known to have homeless encampments but no evidence between them and the body. police have not said anything about the body or the arm but both were decomposing when found. another attack this one involved by pet. two unleashed dogs attacked three people in the park sending them to a hospital in july. san francisco police officers shot and wounded one of the dogs before

kraig debro spoke to witnesses this morning. he joins us with details. >> reporter: good morning, pam. i spoke to two people who said they saw the whole thing. they were virtually about five feet away with another person. and they saw what happened. they saw the officer shoot the man just behind me. if you see the lamp post right there this is where the shooting took place according to their witnesses and when we were here earlier we saw police looking for evidence in that pile of garbage there. the witnesses say that the suspect in this case was shot while sitting on the ground with the officers about five feet away. about six or seven shots were fired from that distance. and the witnesses were behind the lamp post about five feet away. so they saw the whole thing. they said happened around 9:30 last night. came in as a domestic dispute call at a cleaners, laundry mat around the corner. the police arrived here. it's not clear what contact they have with the suspect at the time but the suspect ended up running away. when he got

ktvu kraig debro is there. he will have a live update coming up. >>> a police search for a car thief ended in a police shooting of a family pet. it happened on esperanza drive as miss were searching the neighborhood for a suspect. jade hernandez is in concord with more on the story. >> reporter: we are live in front of the house where this happened. the owner of the pit bull told us his 2.5-year-old dog is resting at home. the dog was shot in the shoulder and the pit bull will survive but the owner says he still has a lot of questions about what happened last night. the situation began when concord police chased a car thief to dina drive which is a block away from where the family lives in concord. that's when he abandoned the stolen car. police began asking neighbors for help and where he said his nightmare began. one of their officers alone with a canine officer went door to door asking permission to do yard searches. when the officer knocked at his home. his pet bulldog managed to head straight out the door.

ktvu's kraig debro has details. >> reporter: 32-year-old mark driving to work this morning when a man driving away from police struck his suv and killed the father of three stepchildren. >> breathtaking. it's hard because every day that's their dad. that's their dad. that's their friend. >> reporter: police say he was killed by a 19-year-old man driving a bmw. that man also died in the crash. that chp tried to stop the unidentified man for speeding on 580 westbound at 1:45 this morning. instead the driver took off but exited the freeway a few miles away. at that very moment he was driving west on 106th avenue on his way to work as a suect driving north on macarthur. >> as a result of the collision two people fatalled out. they didn't make it. >> reporter: he died at the scene. this morning and in disbelief his parents came to the intersection where their son lost his life. his mom recovered two rings. family heirlooms she had just given to her son. >> he's so quiet. he's been a good guy. >> reporter: at the family's oakland laurel district home we were shown dozens of pictures. even o

craig kraig is with us now on the very latest. so what do you know now? >> both men are from oakland. one is a teenager. one in his early 30s. intersection at 106th and macarthur, just opened about 10 to 15 minutes ago. and just opened in time for the morning commute. and they tell us that both victims are from oakland. >>> chp ended at the intersection of 106th and macarthur. chp says one of its officers trieded to pull over the driver of a bmw. on westbound 580 and 105th avenue. drivers sped away, but got off the freeway at foothill and macarthur, just a couple of miles after the initial contact. the impact of the crash killed both people. opd investigators told me that the driver was traveling at a very high rate of speed. police say that you can tell that from what the impact did on both vehicles. not only did they crush the metal. the bmw changed the direction of the suv from southbound 106th avenue. basically to northbound on macarthur. 31-year-old driver dried on -- died on the scene. we can take a live look. the suv was traveling that way on 106th

good morning, kraig. >> good morning, dave. elderly woman and one 13-year- old girl was also robbed by the same group of teenage girls in vallejo. three of these attacks took place on october 22nd. these teenagers, police say, are responsible for all four robberies. and here they are. in a surveillance videotape during one of those robberies. the girls approach a woman, push and then punch her before ripping the woman's purse from her shoulder and hand. this happened just as the woman was about to enter a condo complex. the first attack took place in the early afternoon, october 22nd, near city hall. the second, miles away, near american canyon. the thieves attempted to rob a woman waiting for a bus there. none of the victims have been seriously hurt. but what's happened may have been a psychological blow to the people who can't believe the most vulnerable people are being targeted. >> i can't say that these types of incidents never happen before. but it is highly unusual in the sense that all of our victims are usually elderly

ktvu's kraig debro has been out there all morning. he's live back with more on what investigators are doing right now. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. high street now open. it was closed from about 2:00 this morning until just about five minutes ago. that's good news for commuters. you can see the vehicle that crashed into that greenhouse is gone. that man in that orange and yellow vest, that's a pg&e crew member. he's checking to see if that house is safe to enter. the family that lived in that house was an a transit bus this morning. the bus is gone and i saw the outside the house, so that's good news for them. that began at 2:00 this morning. that white car that you saw earlier in the show crashed into that house, it was parked in an alley nearby. just heard from this police. it's still not clear if the person was shot and drove off or perhaps was driving off and then was shot, but according to police, the person did take some evasive actions by cracking up into the tree and losing control and then crashing in

kraig debro joining us live now with all the details. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. this has been going on every day every year for five years. behind me is the minitent city that these students have set up every year for the last five years in order to dramatize the plight of homelessness in the county. it's called poverty under the stars. every year for the past five years san jose state students have been trying to experience both together for one night to call attention the homelessness problem in the south bay. >> poverty is not only for people who are identify with the guy with the long beard sleeping on the street or someone mentally ill. it encompasses the whole community including students. >> reporter: organizers of this event say there are about 7,000 homeless people in santa clara county. the students sleep outside in makeshift tents and try to experience what homeless people experience every night. just as the same students were preparing to sleep on the lawn they were hit with the news of a 15% incre
