ktvu's cara liu is live.hat happened when the cat got his second chance at freedom. >> reporter: well, this bob cat has quite a story. it started in may when a woman was driving on highway 84 here and sees an injured bob cat lying on the road. she tells me she was worried and decided to throw a towel on top of him and then pick it up and put it in the trunk of her car. she was able to help get the bob cat to a local animal hospital. now in the last 2-1/2 months he had surgery on his left leg and also rehab at the wildlife center. and then the bob cat was brought this afternoon to an open space. workers say the cat was still groggy when they put a tag on him this morning but they opened his cage and then waited for 10 minutes, tipping his cage and taking the top off. the cat took a few steps out out of the cage before making a run for it. >> definitely hesitated on being released. he was uncomfortable and there was a lot of people here which made him unseizee. sometimes -- uneasy. sometimes they bolt or they a

david s, ktvu channel 2 news -- david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> new information on the bay area woman who managed to get on to a flight from san jose to los angeles without a ticket. a judge sentenced her to 177 days in jail. nearly six months for violating probation. she pleaded no contest to stowing away on the southwest jet from san jose to los angeles. the next day she tried to get on another plane. she was arrested a number of times trying to sneak on to flights at sfo. the incident is now the focus of an investigation. the san jose city counsel rules committee voted to schedule a hearing on security. a 16-year-old boy flew to hawaii in the wheel well of a jet. some argue the city needs to take action. >> we need to increase the san jose police department presence at the airport and the fire department and take the necessary steps to secure the perimeters and staff will take care of that. >> the airport's director says she will provide information on the security budget, more back ground on the breaches and spell out the responsibilities of various airport employees. t

ktvu's rob roth is in the news room with the report. rob? >> reporter: the grand jury indictment sheds light on what happened inside the slaughterhouse. what the indictment says occurred that rancho feeding corporation is chilling. the indictment says approximately 79 cows with a form of eye skin cancer were passed on to the food supply. under orders from the co-owner two managers placed healthy cows that passed inspection next to the cancer eye cow carcasses. why didn't inspectors catch it? the switch and slaughter occurred during the inspector's lunch brakes. it says between january 2013 and january 2014 they directed employees to carve usda stamps out of the carcasses. the plant closed in february but not before 8.7 million pounds of beef processed were recalled. they issued a statement that read assuming the allegations are accurate they are [ audio difficulties ] >> reporter: the meat ended up in stores and super markets in california and throughout the united states. reporting live, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and our coverage co

that one couple tells ktvu that a couple of unlikely heroes may have saved their lives. this is cell phone video of the flames at the auto repair shop at a gas station this morning at 12:30. crews controlled the fire but not before it spread to two apartment complexes and a bar next door. one couple credits their bars for getting out safely. >> i was asleep. the dogs start barking. we can see the fire crew the window. >> fortunately, no injuries were reported. the department of public works is now looking into whether the gas and oil that flowed into the sewers poses a public safety hazard. >>> morgan hill police arrested a man over the weekend accused of sexually assaulting a teenaged girl. officers arrested 19-year-old andrew knight on saturday. investigators say knight assaulted a 14-year-old at a house on the east side of morgan hill. knight was arrested and booked into santa clara county jail for lewd and lascivious acts on a child. police are encouraging any other victims to come forward. >>> a former richmond middle school teacher is facing 60 more counts accusing

ktvu's tom vacar spoke with the head of caltrans in sacramento and joins us live with the details. tom? >> reporter: one report was commissioned by the transportation committee, the other by the state legislative analyst office of engineers. both commented on the safety. >> reporter: it reviews allegations against caltrans and the committee of defective bridge wells, concealment of information, retribution, lack of transparency, lack of fulfilling duties to the public and poor product management. caltrans says the report is flawed. >> there is a larger consensus that was reached on specific issues like the quality of the welds. that side of the story isn't told in this document. >> reporter: caltrans greers they could have been -- agrees they could have more been more open to the public and kept the public more aware of the cost but it rejects most of the report as flawed. >> you need to tell us why. if you don't think something isn't safe, why? >> to my knowledge everybody who looked at this, reviews, experts, the peer review and the report acknowledges everybody that they spoke t

tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. now to ken wayne in napa. >> reporter: tom, there is a lot of work to be done. you can see the bricks in the streets. facades exposed. it will take a long time to get back to normal and we have been through this before in napa. the last major quake was september 3, 2000. and lot of similarities from that earthquake to today's quake. in 2000 it was 5.2 earthquake that struck the same general area at 1:36 a.m. in the morning. this happened at 3:20 a.m. in the morning. that quake damaged 200 buildings and left a 5-year-old boy in critical condition after a fire place collapsed on him. you heard about the child being struck by a fire place in this situation. that boy in 2000 made a full recovery. one of the deadliest quakes, 1989, many of us remember that. 6.9 earthquake near santa cruz. it hit 5:04 p.m. october 17. that was responsible for 63 deaths and 3700 injuries. officials believe more people may have been hurt by collapsing freeways but rush hour traffic was light because of the wo

ktvu's janine de la vega spoke to investigators and joins us live from morgan hill, not far from where the body was found lit on fire. janine? >> reporter: cristina, sheriff's deputies have oakland avenue roped off for a mile mile-- mile heerl. it's a rural road. it's well traveled because it's a shortcut for comullers. there was a burned body dumped down the embankment. down 8:00, someone driving down oakland avenue saw smoke coming from the side of the road. they stopped to investigate and found a person lit on fire smoldering about 20 feet away in the veg takes. sheriff's deputy say they pronounced the person dead. they started to treat this as a crime scene and collect evidence. they are not able to say how long the body was on fire. >> we're obviously gonna treat this like a homicide scene. bodies just don't start 0 start on fire by themselves. we always treat these as suspicious. homicide we're gonna investigate it. we're gonna call out our crime scene investigators. we're gonna spend a lot of time out here and collect all of the evidence we possibly can. >> reporter: it's too ea

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live to explain. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: well, good afternoon. we've learned that the missing boat captain has a $75,000 warrant for his arrest out of santa clara county and if you take a look behind me here, you can see that there is a bulldozer and the ship is still there. it has run amuck. we're here on ocean beaches. crews will wait for high tide to pull it to shore. the captain is timothy lybrand shown here who failed to make a court appearance stemming from a 2010 arrest on a drug charge. that's according to the santa clara county district attorney. court documents reveal he has a string of offenses for drug possession, evading a peace officer, reckless drives and other offenses dating back to 1994. police say he could have abandoned his fishing boat. the coast guard called off the search for him because of the boat's proximity to shore. the fact that he made a call from the vessel indicating he had a lifeguard and was gonna swim ashore. the coast guard is here to make sure no diesel
