i think lafayette's painting is slightly more accurate in terms of scale and proximity, but here he is taking a lot with liberties and using a very claudian idea to lead the viewer into the space. they both have the precision of mechanical drawing and yet at the same time, many of these paintings were done from photographs. that is a purely optical medium. he is not just looking, but he is also thinking about what he is looking at. he is, i think, inspired by a lot of historical paradigms that he would have come in contact with as a cadet and a teacher at west point. this is his painting of the narrows, looking over staten island from what is now brooklyn could we see for wadsworth which is two forts, fort tompkins at the top of the bluff and battery weed at its foot. the lower fort is portrayed much larger than it is in real life. the narrows are much more narrow than they are in real life. he is taking great liberties with the facts in order to create a good picture. as every artist knows, don't let the facts stand in the way of a good picture. it is too coincidental, oh, pardon me.

this time at acalanes high school in lafayette.ti was found in the girls bathroom. here is a picture. it says "i will shoot up the school next week." this is just the latest in a series of school threats in the bay area in the last few weeks. acalanes high school sent a letter to parents alerting them about the threat. the school says that the campus is safe and they will continue with their normal schedule. but lafayette police will have increased security at the school all next week. it happened in santa clara between harrison and lafayette streets near santa clara university. that's what's left of the vehicle. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. no word on what caused this accident. police are asking the public to avoid that area while they continue to investigate. right now crews are investigating after a two- alarm blaze broke out in a busy shopping area in berkeley. flames started around 10 a.m. at an asphalt plant in berkeley on virginia street near 580. anne makovec is live at the scene.
