i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. the fire started before 5:00 last night, at an apartment complex mb360 in mission bay on 4th street between china basin and mission rock. chase cain live on the scene. firefighters pouring water on this. when do they think it will be mopped up. >> reporter: last night they thought they would have had this under control but you may be able to tell, it's incredibly windy here in the city. you can see trees bouncing around. winds are gusting powerfully and that's made it very difficult for what firefighters are trying to accomplish. but look at this video from yesterday. you will see part of the apartment building collapse. that is how intense this fire was. that is not a surprise for firefighters. that was the plan, letting that part of the building collapse made their job easier in what has been a very difficult firefight. more than 150 firefighters have been out here trying to get this building put out. the fire broke out nearly 12 hours ago on what they believe to be the 9th floor of

i'm laura garcia-cannon. it's 5:00 now. we begin with new developments in the search for the malaysia airlines jet. in the past hour police identified the second person they say boarded that ill-fated flight with a stolen passport. bob is following the new details. he joins us now with more on the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. interpol released a statement saying they are more and more convinced that these men are probably not terrorists. both are from iran, both traveled using their iranian passports, then switched to the stolen passports aboard flight 370 to beijing. this is an image of one of the two. this is della resa, from iran. interpol wonder he was spongeled or trafficked, hence the reason for the stolen passport. the other man is 19-year-old eouria mhrdad, his final destination was supposed to be frankfurt where his mom was waiting. she contacted police when he didn't show up, helped identify him. authorities believe he was using the stolen passport in attempt to seek asylum in germany. they don'

laura parker, a writer and an editor at national geographic.dom. chuck, when the planes and the ships that are searching through the indian ocean, some of them very deep parts of the indian ocean, 10 or 20,000 feet deep, how close do they have to get to the plane to pick up a signal from it? >> well, there are several factors that matter. sea state is a factor. that can consist of algae in the water, traffic, et cetera. but the average distance that the pinger can located is about two nautical miles. >> that's two nautical miles in any direction? straight down into the ocean? >> that's right. >> can you hear pings on the land? say it's lost in the mountains or hidden somewhere on land? >> actually, the device that we manufacture is -- it only pings when it has come into contact with water. when the aircraft is on land, it actually is a different device on the aircraft that'll help them to locate the -- their wreckage. >> that's a very interesting point. i'm glad you made that. we didn't know that. that would make it more difficult if the plane is o
