family and friends and colleagues are paying respects to lieutenant matt letourneau. the 42-year-old was killed last saturday as they battled arow home fire in south philadelphia. amy mccormick joins us. >> reporter: that is right. the mourners are braving this heavy rain to come out here and pay their respects. more than 1,000 people are estimated to be in attendance today. and they are in the basilica both sitting and standing and they have opened the chapel next door to accommodate everyone. >> inside of the funeral mass for philadelphia firefighter 42-year-old lieutenant, matt letourneau, mourners came to sew their support and honor the 11 year veteran of the department and his family. >> matt is not gone, he has simply gone ahead. he has gone ahead and joined a company of other heroes. >> it was before the mass that the impressive procession came through the city. the casket rode on top of engine 35 where he worked. they carried his casket and side of the basilica for his final viewing and funeral. not far behind the hat letourneau war, running into burning build

this is matthew letourneau's home, and where he got his start. though we spoke to say that firefighting was his passion. black bunding hangs outside the fire company. he was a lifetime member here. he became a volunteer firefighters when he was a teenager. his goal was to make this his career. that's why he joined the fire department, but also served as an instructor around the area. so many people are expressing their condolences, saying he was a great friend taught them a lot, and just saying how he will be very missed. he led people and today he led the group of firefighters, trying to save someone's life. >> reporter: in addition to fire fighting we're told he also loved playing golf. he was also involved in issues regarding animal welfare. >>> count on nbc 10 for continuing coverage. right now we're working to firn out who the other person was whoifs killed in the fire and on the app we have more pictures and video along with a special profession for lieutenant letourneau. >>> now to our first alert weather. it's just brutal walking outside.

lieutenant letourneau was trapped inside for 30 minutes as his fellow firefighters tried to rescue him. but he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. members of the engine 45 are devastated and so is the entire community. brave men and women within the fire department and we also learned that lieutenant letourneau was volunteer for the red paw relief organization. he fostered animals, rescued from fire scenes. and we talked recent toll a woman who says he saved her life when she nearly choked to death when she was just six years old. he lived nearby and heard the call over his radio and rushed right over getting there before the ambulance. >> he was obviously like an amazing person, and he clearly enjoyed helping others and that's -- he helped me. he helped me be here to say thank you. >> reporter: so lieutenant letourneau just a man who help the so much to so many people. the viewing will go on until 9:00 o'clock tonight. it is public but the family has asked the media to romaine outside and across the street from the cathedral. lucy. >> thank shawnette. procession for lieutenant
