jim gilmore took pains to reassure everyone today after lindsey graham's departure that he, jim gilmore is still very much in it to win it. to governor gilmore's point, though, i will say he's right, that with senator graham leaving jim gilmore is now the only military veteran in the race from either party. even though senator graham was polling at less than 1% in the polls, his departure could have a bigger impact than you might think. as long as don't think about it as just redistributing his support. there's two ways in which lindsey graham's departure may change the race in a noticeable way. first it may get u.s. senators off the sidelines in terms of make endorsements of various republican candidates. until now most republican senators have stayed out of the race, they have not declared who they're going to endorse. that may be out of deference to senator graham, who is both a long-time republican senator and also very widely liked by his republican and democratic colleagues in the senate. his departure also does one other thing, though. it may make south carolina a lot more intere

is significant especially when you talk about rubio, and rubio today acknowledged that he and lindsey graham do have similar views when it comes to national security, both of them more hawkish. rubio saying he will miss graham for his humor on the campaign trail. but the significance is not just when you talk about national security. it's also opening up potential other endorsements for rubio from folks in the senate who may have wanted to defer on that out of respect to senator graham. additionally, in making some moves in south carolina, people who for the same reason down in that key early state, a state where rubio is making a play, a place where a lot of folks think he can be strong since he's simply not seeming to be able to dominate iowa or new hampshire the way we have seen other candidates be able to do. lindsey graham getting out, if he were to endorse marco rubio could open doors in south carolina. the question of course is if and whether lindsey graham will endorse at all. >> i think he will hold the cards a little close to the vest, but my goodness, if any republican candidate w

i have the greatest respect for lindsey graham who is like a brother to me.i'm one of those old fashioned people that believe in loyalty. i'll stay with imuntil he succeeds or fails. that's what my life has been all about. i think john kasich, who i came to the house with in '82 has been a very successful governor in a swing state. marco rubio, a view as a future leader. i'm sure i've left a couple of people out. there's a lot of very good candidates out there. there's far more than three. you can do the math. and i worry about that a lot of this aspect of this campaign. as far as who's the worst, i have, i wouldn't say any of them are the worst. i add mir anybody willing to put themts out there and seek the nomination and go through the things dwrou when you're a candidate for for the nomination, so i add mir every one of them, but i also on national security issues, i have strong reservation, i have disagreement with senator cruz, who voteded against the defense. i thought that was wrong because i believe our first obligation is to defend the country, so it

when i interviewed john mccain about a month ago, he was quick to throw his support behind lindsey graham for president. but to first become the republican nominee, graham will have to separate himself from a very crowded field. what is the veteran senator' s message, and can it break through the noise created by front runner and outsider donald trump? i caught up with the senator preparing for the primary in manchester, new hampshire. senator graham: we' re pushing hard. the reason i' ve run for president above all others, fernando, is on national security, i have a plan to destroy isil. president obama' s strategy is not working. we don' t have enough ground forces in iraq to repair the damages from us leaving. we have 3500, i would go to 10,000. that would allow more american trainers and advisors, more attack helicopters to take the battle to isil, ramadi and mosul, a city of a million people, forward air controllers to help drop bombs on the right people, special forces to go iraq. syria is a complete hell on earth situation. there are no good choices left, but here' s the good news.
