nbc's luke russert live for us at laguardia airport. luke, i know you spent some time or have been spending some time with folks who were stuck there overnight. at this point any hope they get to their destination later today? >> probably not later today for the majority of people that they've spoken to craig. i've been here since 4:00 a.m. literally two minutes ago before i came on your iriair, i heard my first airplane. making some progress. i can also report we've had one flight so targeting out tonight. it's a spirit flight 180 going to ft. lauderdale. i spoke to a passenger on that one. i said you must be happy to go to ft. lauderdale. yes, indeed so. there is a little bit of movement but i stress the word little. if you look at the big board almost every single flight with the exception of that one to ft. lauderdale still has canceled next to it. the big question when will the airport be up and running? probably about mid morning tomorrow and by tomorrow afternoon it should be up to full strength. the republican realason is because

luke russert is at laguardia that got 11 inches of snow. perhaps less than they expected but still more than 5,000 flights canceled today. nearly 7,000 over the course of three days. it's going to be a long time until things get back to normal. >> yeah, andrea definitely a big headache for those who are planning to travel through new york and/or out of new york. one thing though is because of the preemptive action taken by officials, there were not a lot of travelers stranded at laguardia and other new york airports overnight. just about 70 last night and they had access to cots and it wasn't sort of horrific scenes weaver seen during other blizzards where there's fights over food and chargers and what not. the people who had to spend the night most made the best of it and decently taken care. one thing we should point out for travelers inconvenienced airlines have switched up flights and waived the usual change fees for those who have been stranded they are not going to be reimbursed -- the airline doesn't put them up in a hotel or anythin

luke russert is in northern virginia. >> reporter: hey, there, craig, here at dca, there is a lot of cancellations. we have over 120. a little bit to the north of me in dulles they are seeing over 40 and bwi is over 40. and talking to some of the officials here they said look for protective cancellations to start later in the afternoon, especially if you are flying up into the northeast corridor, new york, boston. a lot of those flights have been canceled. this is expected to be the norm here in d.c. throughout tomorrow morning. the winter weather advisory is in effect until about 10:00 a.m. a bit of good news. if you are trying to fly internationally out of dulles the expectations are those flights will move forward. they will try to route the planes around the storm itself. but it does not look good if you are flying north. south, you should be okay. but from talking to some of the passengers a lot of the cancellations that are happening if your flight was to start in the northern part of the country today and then end down here in washington, well it didn't make it. so there are p

. >> joining me now is luke russert. trapped at laguardia for 12 14 hours at this point. how are you faring? how is the airport at this point? >> i've been here about 12 hours, ms. alex wagner. the airport is slowly but surely getting back up to speed. about an hour ago, there was a flight that arrived, an airline from ft. lauderdale. >> was that hailed with applause when that plane landed? >> yes, yes. >> were people excited? >> yes. there's also a flight from las vegas that seems to be on time. while most of them are cancelled for today and late into the night and perhaps early into the morning, there are a few that are starting to move forward as normal. a few things we should mention. the reason why we have so many cancellations is the protective measures put in place by the airline companies really starting late last night, but also the road ban that the new york officials put forward. the subway ban. what was the by-product of that? all the people that run the airport, they weren't able to get into work today, so this airport really is a ghost town. they have starte

i'm joined by nbc's luke russert. luke, i've been watching you and understand you've talked to some of these stranded paengss. how are they holding up? what are they doing? how are they passing time there at laguardia? >> reporter: kind of the same way the media is passing the time, craig, sitting in the cav cafeteria and looking at their phones and enjoying the one coffee place that's open and lunch place. i've got to tell you, there's been criticism of the governor and mayor de blasio for preemptively closing the roads and shutting down the subway saying that that was too much for too little of a storm. but, when the airlines started canceling flights last night, that really did allow for a lot of people to check into a hotel or alter their travel plans. so thankfully we didn't see these horrific scenes that usually accompany a blizzard of this magnitude where you have people sprauled out on cots not enough food or chargers. all of that being said for the 70 or so that spent the night, not too pleasant. take a listen

let's get the latest from laguardia where luke russert is back with us. luke, what's the latest now? >> reporter: well, jose the latest is that as you see behind me there are not a lot of people at the airport and there are no flights that we know of that are really going out today, maybe a few tonight but overall this airport along with jfk, newark boston to philadelphia well they're at a stand still. let me talk to you about laguardia here. we spoke earlier about the fact there was 4600 cancellations today. one of the things we're seeing is because of the subway stopping last night, because of the road stopping last night, a lot of personnel needed to run the airport effectively, well they have not been able to get to work. we're starting to see a few trickle in. as i talk to you now, we don't see the tsa, people behind airline counters, a lot of shops are not up and running. i was looking at the runways, they're still being plowed. it will take a fair amount of time safe to say before laguardia and other airports are up and running until full strength,

luke russert on capitol hill. thank you both for being with me. kris, start with you.a lot of agreement on what they could agree on right? >> reporter: a little maybe on something like trade or maybe corporate tax reform but i think it is worth setting the stage that you have republicans who are going into a meeting and they're not happy with the president, with veto threats he issued and the fact that he did the executive orders on things like immigration, and you have people in the white house who are still stinging from majority leader mitch mcconnell who said four years ago, almost five years ago, his job was to make barack obama a one term president, so that sort of sets the stage. having said that i think the president and mitch mcconnell have something of a cordial relationship, and the bottom line is this they both have it in their interest to try to get something done. the president who is looking at his legacy and closing window of opportunity, and republicans who now that they're in charge of both houses of congress want to prove they can govern jose. >> and

nbc's luke russert joins us. luke, obviously the allegations are true the access the man had to the house speaker are chilling given he was a bar tender and was there many times. >> it is frightening, in fact. we know that john boehner sort of knew mr. hoyt as a bartender at his local ohio country club and the speaker is often there playing golf and enjoying merlot two of the things he likes to do in his off time. the other thing, tamron that's chilling about this is the fact is that mr. hoyt did have a lot of weapons at his home. it was found at his home the ammunition for an sks assault rifle. thankfully his mother in fact actually took the rifle out of his apartment when he wasn't around because she was worried about her son's mental state. so this is certainly something that caused alarm on capitol hill. the speaker of the house is protected by capital police but not the same secret service detail as for the president or vice president. there's some semblance of advance team but not like people are screened to

let's go to laguardia airport, one of the three major airports where luke russert is. rter: definitely, jose. the sun is outside and shining and literally the airport is back to life. yesterday when we spoke this was a literal ghost town behind me. now it is filled with people and personnel who are needed to run the airport, the tsa agents counter agents people that run the concessions that weren't here yesterday, they were able to get to work today and things seem to be back up and running. all of that being said it is not totally smooth sailing because of the backlog. a few hundred cancellations out of laguardia this morning and there are still on-going delays. overall, though the airport seems to be operating at over 70% capacity which is better than people expected when we first heard about the storm. just from talking to a few passengers in the terminal especially ones that had been delayed, they say look now that there's life in the airport, it is not as dire as it was, we were stranded here overnight, and they think they'll be able to get out hopefully today. thi

nbc news capitol hill correspondent luke russert -- excuse me luke i'm getting tongue-tied this morning how are you? >> good to see you. >> reporter: indeed. >> let's talk about this "wall street journal" editorial on myth romney saying if myth romney is the answer what is the question? it's hard to see what advantages mr. romney brings that the many potential first-time candidates who have succeeded as governors do not. what is the buzz friend? >> reporter: well the buzz is as follows. you're starting to see a lot of republicans think twice or i should say think three times now about mitt romney and whether or not this is a good idea. aside from some of his close allies from utah you'd be hard presseded to find somebody of real importance within either the senate or the republican conference that's going to the mat this early for myth romney. interestingly enough tamron, whenever we've been on these retreats before house speaker john boehner has always hinted that his support is really more towards the jeb bush side of the establishment wing and he would very much like jeb bush to run.

well for that we go to nbc's luke russert on capitol hill. ght, luke joni ernst steps into the spotlight. what are we expecting to hear from her? >> reporter: well, joy, as we've talked about, joni ernst is very emblematic for the gop. they were very conservative in the primary. her campaign was and moderated her views and it became a campaign toward the end about personalities. that is what you'll see her do tonight, sell her personality as a war veteran and a pig farmer around this time last year and now giving the rebuttal to the president and that is a rise in politics right there. and mitch mcconnell said let's turn the page and find out where we can work together and be cognizant that the government is not the solution. sort of tried and tested old gop ideas but the selection by joni ernst has a lot more to do with personality than to do with policy. one thing mitch mcconnell said around the christmas holiday, he doesn't want republicans to be made out to be the bad guys in the room. he is working hard to change the face of how they are

luke russert and senior congressional reporter at po politico. can you gain this out for us.oing through the senate this week and get through with amendments attached to it. any chance that president obama's posture on this changes? >> it is going to get through. i don't think it will get through this week because of the senate's schedule as well as the fact that mitch mcconnell has promised to opened up the process, allow for scores and scores of votes. so, this could, this could play out up until the state of the union week and maybe even after the state of the union week. so mcconnell will get his 60 votes in the senate. i don't think there is any doubt about that. but what he will not get is the 67 votes that he would need to override a presidential veto. so that is the dynamic that boehner and mcconnell are going to face not just on keystone but on a lot of key issues going forward. they may have the votes to get out of the house and get enough moderate democrats to get legislation through the senate but they don't have the votes to override a veto. so what do they do ne

nbc news congressional correspondent luke russert is at the retreat. good morning. >> good morning. how are you? >> great. you talked to john boehner yesterday, we talked about the caucus of immigration. are things getting any better? >> reporter: no. i would think it's fair to say, jose they're kind of stuck. where you see them on immigration right now is they want to confront president obama for his executive orders that he issued back last year. they want to do it in the context of this department of homeland security bill but look what's happened jose over the last month. the tax in paris. you had this foiled terrorist attack against the capitol that happened just this week. so the see the importance of homeland security funding, making republicans apprehensive trying to play politics with that important money over the topic about immigration. all that being said they realized they have to confront the president in some capacity. how they're going to do that they do not know. with the house passed wednesday, rebeal of doca 26 republicans against it thought it went too far to the

our luke russert is following reactions on the hill. based on early reactions you've seen will the people be able to make the reforms a reality? >> no that's the short and simple answer. the republican conference in the house and senate will look at this and it will essentially say that president obama is just a tax hiking liberal and this will go nowhere. where i think though these things that the president are going to speak about regarding wealth and in terms of the inequality that is seen there and how the top own 40% of the wealth in the united states. i think that's sort of trying to shape up what the democratic message is going to be for the future. democrats have tried to move forward on income inequality in the past few elections and weren't successful in 2014. president obama was successful to some degree painting mitt romney in 2012 as being looked as out of touch. they are going to try to grab this mantra moving forward of the we willth discrepancy he at the top and .01% should pay more so everybody benefits. if you put that

msnbc's luke russert is covering things on capitol hill. bring us up to speed on what happened last night and what happened a short time ago as well. >> well, craig, the gop leadership was originally going to move a bill through the house they expected to pass which would have outlawed abortion after 20 weeks. they put a thing in there that said except in the case of rape or incest. however, they had a stipulation that rape or incest would have to be reported to authorities. that upset a bunch of republican women within the conference, saying that to have the language in there they have have to report to authorities was a step too far. it also was upsetting to some moderates within the conference that said, hey, look, we just took back the senate. we have all this power. why is one of the first things out of the gate trying to move on the abortion front, which is something that has been a liability for us in elections past? so you sort of saw this emergence of republican women and some of the more moderate voices in the conference say, we d

joining me now nbc congressional correspondent luke rumplt russert at the retreat in hershey and joining us from the rnc winter meeting, luke start with you. everybody wants to talk about 2016. republican lawmakers have to get 2015 figured out. >> yeah. that little thing calm called governing. right, jose? this retreat is extremely important because they have to mesh out difference on one big issue, immigration. yesterday house republicans passed a bill that went to the right of where a lot of senate republicans want to be on the issue of immigration nep specifically passed an amendment to repeal docka. something that got 26 republican nay votes on that alone. they have to figure what the pathway forward to fund the department of homeland security expiring february 28th as well as make a stand against president obama latest immigration action and order. they're trying to figure that out now. john boehner by passing that bill in the house yesterday put the gop position at least very far to the right of where mitch mcconnell probably wants to be and where surely a lot of the presidential c
