this is news 6 at 6:00, i'm matt austin. >> i'm lisa bell. the accident happened in a wooded area of oak hill in volusia county. that's where news 6 reporter is live tonight. what can you tell us about this? >> yeah, sheriffs are telling us that as far as they can tell, this was accidental. this is as close as we could get here to this scene. the hunters were so deep into the woods in swampy area they had to use police helicopters to lead rescuers to the victim. it still took a half-hour to find them three miles back. two people had just arrived who knew the victim. whether they learned the name. police say the victim is a 65-year-old. he was here with his 56-year-old friend when police say that friend shot him with a .12 gauge shotgun. now, police once again say this may have been accidental. the area where the victim was found was tricky to get to because of the conditions. >> there's hard ground back there, swampy and marshy waters. the guys have waders on, swamp land, marsh, scrub area. >> we don't know what those men were hunting, but th

i'm matt austin. this story developing by a minute. a shooting happened near seven tine 92 at airport boulevard. that's just south of 17. general what did they say. >> reporter: one person is in custody. that's a suspect and another person has been rushed to the hop. now a very active scene out here ment they're blocking off the intersection pretty far down and investigating to get those details out. here's what we know. called around 7 o'clock tonight about a suspicious moon with a boulevard. when they got to the scene, they found a person that match that had description. we're told at some point, shots were fired and police have not confirmed who fired first. they're calling this an officer fired shooting. not a whole lot confirmed. what we have learn second-degree one person was shot and taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound. they're still not saying where that person was hit. but those injuries are not life threatening. they're telling us, this is an ongoing investigation. they say that suspect in custody. again, that one pers

i'm matt austin. >> i'm ginger gadsden. first we're starting to see the temperatures go up a little bit. but forget about that. there is now a newly named storm called alex. chief meteorologist tom sorrells is here with your pinpoint weather first at 5:30. a storm in january? >> kind of crazy, huh? first time since 1978 we've had a named storm in the atlantic this early in the season in january and only the fourth time in recorded history we've had a january storm named. there it is. alex, north of the cape verde islands tonight. you can see the eye pretty well-defined right there on the satellite imagery. vapor loop so you can see it there, too. a lot of water spraying in front of it, into the azores. it's going to be heading due north by friday. it will have wind speeds of 60 miles per hour, a strong storm in the dead of winter over the north atlantic. let's talk about what's happening to us. that storm will never affect you. what will affect you is what's brewing in the gulf. we don't have much rain close to us, but, loo

good evening, i'm matt austin. >> and i'm lisa bell. this attack had police puzzled because they couldn't figure out why this couple was targeted. >> reporter: lisa, the suspect is 19 year old michael da coda phillips. police say he was staying with his mother just a few doors down from the victims. the victims mother says he's a total stranger. he's being charged with two counts of attempted murder. police say 19 year old phillips was staying right down the street from the couple he stabbed. a young man -- that's when her husband ran to help. but was also attacked. she was stabbed eight times. her husband seven. including several near his heart and stomach. their two young children were home at the time, but were not hurt. police quickly sent out this sketch of the mystery attacker. and almost immediately tips poured in. phillips, his own father said he had recent severe anger issues. and when police showed the victims his picture, the wife started crying. she said it feels like he's looking at me the way he did when he hurt me. and ac

i'm matt austin. >> i'm lisa bell. this happened inside a sanford apartment. we sent news 6 reporter shaun chaiyabhat to the apartment on stonebrook drive. what are you learning about this attack? >> you mentioned all of those injuries. we have also learned that one of those injuries is life-threatening. i'm going to step out of the way so you can see the crime scene investigators are still here on the scene. the attack happened inside one of the upstairs apartments here at stonebrook. sanford police say around 3:00, they got a call from a woman screaming, saying dogs were attacking them. the first officer who got to the possibly pit bulls, all on top of one woman. that woman suffered some very serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital. the officer shot the dogs, killing four of the five. now, four other people were also hurt, including two children, but again the most serious injury could be life-threatening. neighbors say large dogs here are not even supposed to be here. >> oh, wow. >> have you ever seen pit bulls in the area? >> no. pit bulls are not

. >> i'm matt austin. the first breaking news on a though. we just learned a jury found terry johnson not guilty. johnson is the man police say on the ground in some cell phone video. confrontation with orlando police officer james wilson. we first told you about this back in august. witnesses say the officer threw the first punch here. orlando police tell us their internal investigation into the officer is still ongoing. right now, johnson is still in jail because he's also facing charges for spitting on a jail officer. >> also breaking right now, volusia county deputies just identified a body found floating in the st. johns river. sky 6 flew above that scene this afternoon in de bary. victim as 42-year-old walter devon mckinnon. he was reported missing on monday. his family last saw him sunday night. we're working to gather more information. as soon as question get it, we'll bring it to you. >> also right now, a live look over downtown orlando. it is gorgeous out there. the exact opposite from how it looked around noon today. those storms r

good evening i'm matt austin. >> and i'm lisa bell. let's get right out to shaun chaiyabhat. he's right outside with the latest. >> reporter: we now know the school district has investigated the teacher before, but now, police need to know if there are any other victims. after years as a teacher 66-year-old donald sharp sits in molesting one of his students. it happened six year ago when the girl was in his third grade class. but she only came forward last may. >> when someone's with you in a position of trust and they do that and violate you in that way, it could take quite a while to get the courage to come forward. >> the girl on revealed the abuse during counseling for post-traumatic stress. >> the allegations are he took her outside in a hallway and placed his hands inside her pants and molested her. >> reporter: but that same year in 2009, orange county public schools investigated sharp for other allegations from numerous other students. they complained sharp had them sit on his lap during class. but that investigation was only internal. police and dcf told news 6 they

i'm matt austin. >> i'm lisa bell. news 6 chief meteorologist tom sorrells is pinpointing the cold temperatures for us. so what can we expect tonight? >> got another cold one coming on tonight. we dropped to an overnight low in orlando this morning of 41 degrees, way below the normal, not a record. daytona beach dropped to 38. melbourne you dropped to 43 this morning. well below your normal of 49. other overnight lows, gainesville toppled to 28. we did pretty well on the rebound. we did okay today but not warm enough that we got rid of every advisory. there are no freeze warnings in this blued in zone you see from marion county, that's a frost advisory until 9:00 tomorrow morning. overnight, between about 4 a.m. and 9 a.m., widespread frost all over marion county. in the meantime, on-the-town forecast here in orlando, by 9:00, we're down to 53. we'll be chilly and cold, 51 degrees by 10 p.m. i'll be back in a few minutes to pinpoint overnight lows where you live and talk about the warm-up and the rain that's in the for

i'm matt austin. >> and i'm lisa bell. police are putting up these pictures of what they think will have key information about this murder investigation. it happened on december 23rd outside kim's food market. that's at west third street in and shaun, that community is still really shaken up by this. >> reporter: they are. take a look at this memorial right over here. you can tell how much neighbors here really loved this store owner. and police are banking on that. they are hoping that someone around here has the key to crack this case. they released these pictures of three people, they are not suspect, but may know something about what led up to joshua her's death. he owned kim's food store for the past year. in that time, he became a well liked, and important part of the neighborhood. >> he's just the sweetest person. i was astonished, baffled that happened to him. >> the people in this neighborhood liked that store owner enough that someone would come forward? >> definitely. most definitely. anybody that would know som

i'm matt austin. >> i'm lisa bell. dozens of homeless people have been camping out there for months. news 6 reporter amanda castro is joining us live. what's going on? >> well, it was just minutes ago we saw police officers from the daytona beach police walking up here and chief mike chitwood yelling, announcing that everyone here has to leave. they're either go going to have to go to a home, a shelter at the salvation army or if they stay here they'll be arrested for violating the camping ordinance. chief mike chitwood is joining us. this happened just minutes ago. this has been a very long, developing issue. why all of a sudden are we seeing some action? >> there were a bunch of legal hurdles that had to be cleared. we had to give these folks an opportunity to give these folks the beds in a shelter. we didn't have enough beds to accommodate this. we've worked closely with the business community and the salvation army and today we were able to secure 82 beds in the facility. now that we have the beds, we come down her

i'm matt austin. >> i'm lisa bell in for ginger tonight. the storms have passed. now some cold temperatures are settling in. here's a live look outside from it has cleared up quite a bit from what it looked like earlier today. chief meteorologist tom sorrells is here with your pinpoint weather first at 5:30. so it's going to get pretty chilly this weekend. >> it really is. it's almost like last friday when we had two different days jammed into one day. sunday, too. these big cold fronts make a world of difference once they get through. our last warning went away from us at about 12:15 this afternoon. since then, we've done nothing but continue to change things quickly. what you're looking at right now is the water vapor loop. i talk about this all the time. it's one of my favorite forecasting tools. the white colors are the moisture pushing away. anytime you see the orange, that's intense dry air. black and orange, dry. look at the dry air aloft, just gobbling up the cloud cover and scouring all the moisture away. that is about as much of a difference as i've ever
