and on the top count, which is really deals with the civil rights violations of tyre nichols and his death. all of the officers were acquitted on that. the prosecutors just did not meet their burden was a fairly quick verdict, about six hours. the jury comes back with their with their verdict one of the officers, demetrius haley, he is convicted of civil rights violations, but for the injuries to tyre nichols sort of like an assault and also for not giving him the care that he needed in the immediate after afterwards. and then obviously, all of the officers here convicted of essentially a cover up here. they try to hide what they did with their bosses on body camera footage, you can hear them saying turn your camera. you can also see them and hear them making up, coming up with a story of what happened here and so on that the jurors convicted all three officers and keep in mind there were five officers in total involved in this. two of them actually pleaded guilty and wound up cooperating with the government with the united states. this was a federal case. >> those deals still stand.

after the verdict was read tyre nichols' father said the family was elated.ing. the three also face state murder charges. thaddeus johnson teaches criminal justice and criminology at georgia state university, and is a former ranking memphis police officer. what do you make of this verdict of this split decision? >> it makes sense, and this is what we want in our current system, decatur punishments for the charges for the actual crimes, and so based on the evidence of what the jury who were more than capable to judge against, they came up with a verdict that everyone did not violate civil rights, but they did do something that was really illegal, it was a breach of trust of the position that they held, and those charges [indiscernible] correspondent: the defense actually played the tape to show -- to try to minimize their client's actions. where does this fit in the ongoing conversation about policing and police violence? >> that is a good point, and a couple of things jumped out to me in this process. first of all, the officers bear the responsibility and bla

nichols died three days later. that prompted protests across the country, including here in the bay area. following the release of body cam footage of that incident, city leaders in oakland say the coliseum deal is still on track after the city missed a key payment deadline. both the city and the a's have separately sold their halves of the site to the african american sports and entertainment group. it is paying $230 million to turn the property into an entertainment complex with restaurants and housing. in yesterday's city council meeting, it was revealed that asg missed an important down payment. it was supposed to pay the city a total of $15 million by yesterday, october. well, two days ago i should say october first. oakland's budget plan passed in july states that drastic cuts would be triggered on october 1st if the city didn't receive that down payment. that would include cutting the number of police officers on the streets and temporarily closing five fire stations. however, the city says that contingency

john nichols, i want to talk a little bit more about michigan and the rust belt states. what's happening. we have been talking about it nonstop now since the republican national convention at least. have you seen any changes, any indicators for you? >> there's a lot of indicators. what we've seen is that the harris campaign has really begun to get much more focused in on the reality of these states. remember, certainly the harris campaign picked up from the biden campaign. it still had to get its groove, get its focus, and what i have noticed, in fact, it fits into the last two days here, kamala harris yesterday did three stops in wisconsin. today, three stops, i think it's three stops in michigan. and her message is becoming much more focused and the focus is on these labor issues, these trade issues. she should have been talking about them two weeks ago. there is simply no question of that. and i think what you've seen in all of these states is a narrowing, a closing of the gap. right after the convention, harris took off, opened up some margins. there was a lot of hap

>> i mean, this charge, the top count here on the civil rights had to do with tyre nichols death, and the responsibility basically at the hands of these office officers who are supposed to protect him. but they argued instead violated his civil rights and how they detained him, and how they treated him, and the fact that they didn't give him the level of care that he needed so that jury decided that the prosecutors here of federal prosecutors in federal court did not meet their burden. and so they've acquitted these officers of the top count. the top count where if they were convicted, they could potentially would have would have spent the rest of their life in a federal prison, but instead, what you now have is these officers still facing a substantial amount of prison time, but certainly not on the top count today this morning, the attorneys for the families are starting to react. take a listen to what one of the attorneys said are relieved to know that all the officers will be held accountable. they could face up to 20 years in prison. and now we're going to be focused on the sente
