she was going after a burglary suspect in the highlands. 9news reporter noel brennan joins us now with an update. noel, at last check the officer was in fair condition. and she's expected to recover, gary. officer rachel eid is being treated at denver health. she's been with denver police since 2014 and often appears in the department's youtube videos. yesterday afternoon, she went to check out a burglary... that quickly led to shots being fired. the call came in about 1:25 yesterday afternoon near 37th and grove. officer eid and another officer caught up with two suspects a few blocks away. that's where officer eid was shot - hit in the lower left leg. one man was taken into custody, but another man took off and later carjacked a woman. officers chased him to 35th and lowell where he lost control... shots were man was killed. yesterday, chief robert white addressed the shooting involving officer eid... and the one that sent sgt. tony lopez junior to the hospital in december. denver police have not named the suspect who was killed yesterday afternoon or the other man who was taken into

to tighten control over the biggest projects - like the v-a hospital in aurora. 9news reporter noel brennan is live from the construction site. noel, the bill aims to prevent what we've seen happen with this project. right, gary. following this story for years now. construction costs have soared the hospital is expected to cost 1.7 billion dollars that's three times its original estimate. yesterday, the house passed a bill to increase oversight and management over these types of projects. the bill would affect so-called super costing more than $100 million. the bill says the v-a would have to let the u-s army corps of engineers or another federal agency manage those projects. the v-a would have to report back to congress to keep lawmakers up to date on how things are going. the bill also says congress must be notified 60 days before any money is spent on advance planning or design. the legislation passed a voice-vote in the house yesterday. now it heads to the senate. investigators have blamed what's happened here on multiple design changes. and a complicated contract process va officials d

a matter of hours forced c-dot to close a 15 mile interstate late monday night. 9news reporter noel brennan is us. noel, drivers are dealing with a 5 hour detour. that's right, gary. the closure starts near dotsero and goes to glenwood springs. drivers are being sent about 200 miles out of their way... up to steamboat, over to craig, down to rifle and back onto i-70. this is what drivers will be dealing with at least until tomorrow afternoon. and this is why. both lanes of i-70 were covered in boulders the size of small cars. rockslide that happened in glenwood canyon on monday. this one damaged a car and a semi truck. the car was able to drive through, but the truck was stuck - pinned by a huge boulder. thankfully, the driver wasn't hurt. c-dot started to clear away some of the rocks yesterday... while geologists checked the hillside on foot and from the air. c-dot has a lot of work left to do. they've got to remove all the rocks, fix the road and put up netting on the hillside. they hope to have one lane open by tomorrow afternoon. east and westbound traffic will alternate and be led by a

bill faces an uphill battle in the house - democrats will likely vote it down. 9news reporter noel brennan is live from the state capitol this morning. noel, republicans tried to pass a similar measure just a year ago. just a year ago, senate republicans approved a measure just like this one. but it was voted down in a house committee. with democrats still in control of the house, it's unlikely this latest attempt will be successful. nevertheless, here's what the bill would change in colorado. right now, gun owners in colorado need a permit to carry a concealed handgun. this measure would do away with that requirement. the sponsor of the bill says the current law places an unnecessary burden on legal gun owners in colorado. senate democrats who voted against the plan. argued that gun training would be needed to protect people who wouldn't know carrying a gun. the bill passed the senate on a party line vote yesterday. now, it heads to the house. it's likely to see the same result as the bill that failed last year. but, if it does pass, colorado would become the eighth state to allow people

noel brennan is following this for us. sch's expected to make a full recovery. >> she was in fair condition. she is expected to recover from officer joined denver police back in 2014. she often appears in you tube videos for the denver police department. she's now the second denver police officer to be shot since december. it started yesterday afternoon with a burglary call near 37th 37th and grove. they caught up with two suspects a few blocks away. that's where officer ide was shot, hit in the lower left leg. one man was taken into custody there. another man later carjacked a woman. officers had to chase them all the way to 35th and lowell where he ended up losing control. that's where shots were exchanged and the man was killed. chief robert white addressed the one that sent sergeant tony lopez, jr. back to the hospital in late december. >> i believe the officers will be okay. obviously during this, it's a very challenging and difficult time. but everyone is putting their arms around each other and committed to continue

have more information on how drivers can get around the mess, but first, we will check in with noel brennan, and things are too dangerous even for emergency crews to get in and start their work right now. >> reporter: at this point, cheryl, that's what we are hearing, and i'm just west from gypson, and i'm about 9 miles from where the rock slide occurred. this is the frontage road for i- 70, and they are closing off the entrance where we are. we are told from the cdot supervisor here that it's closed mile marker 131 to 116 right now, and that's basically from here to glenwood springs, and we are told in this slide there was a semitrailer hit this trailer, and at this point, we don't know if anyone was injure in the slide, but cdot telling me that crews are point. helicopter and geologists to look at the slide from above to get in there. this is the second slide we have seen in 24 hours. we have pictures of the first one that happened nearby in glenwood canyon early yesterday morning, about 3:00, and we know it was glenwood canyon, and no injuries in that slide. crews were able to remove the

noel brennan has been live most of the morning. police are still looking for the driver of the jeep? >> reporter: they are. right at west 80s and sheraton boulevard, the car slammed into the chevy malibu. over the curb, through this rock pile over here, and you can see the debris in the chevy malibu 60 yards away. this is what the area looked like as the investigators were working last night. the woman driving the malibu was killed almost instantly, and her 15-year-old daughter was also sent to the hospital, and we are waiting to hear what her condition is this morning. three men were inside of the jeep, police say, and they actually fled on foot after the crash, and two of them were found 2.5 miles away from the crash scene at u.s. 36th, and they were taken into custody. one is believed to be the driver, and one has injuries and was taken to the hospital to be treated. at this point, gary, we are awaiting word on the 15-year- old girl. obviously everyone is hoping she will be be okay. as soon as we hear from police, >>> it's 5:34

noel brennan joins us live from the site in aurora. noel, you're looking at the newest bill that will effect big construction projects. any project that cost more than $100 million. the budget here is expected to be $1.7 billion. that's three times the original estimate when this whole thing started years ago. we know yesterday that the house decided to move forward with the bill that would increase oversight and management of these so-called super construction projects. the va would have to let the u.s. army corp of engineers the va would are to report back to congress to keep lawmakers up to date. the bill also says congress must be notified 60 days before any money is spent on advanced planning or design. that legislation passed a voice vote in the house today. now it will move on to the senate. now, investigation looked into what the problems were with the va hospitals were in aurora. they say it really came down to mismanagement and a lot of design changes with the hospital and a complicated contract process that the va didn't full

. >> noel brennan is in bailey. we'll start with him i guess. noel, deputies there knew this guy was very dangerous when they went to evict him? >> reporter: they did, gary. that is why eight different deputies went to that home to serve a high-risk eviction notice. that is what they are calling it, to that suspect, martin worth. that was early yesterday morning. eight officers went there at about 9:45 in the morning. police say worth came out onto the deck and went back inside. officers followed him in the house and that is when he started shooting. corporal nate kerrigan was hit. he died at the scene yesterday morning. martin was hit several times. he is in critical condition at the hospital. a bullet grazed the ear of captain mark hancock. he was treated and released from the hospital. last night the community of bailey gathered at the church here to remember corporal nate kerrigan. 100 people showed up, including football players from the high school where kerrigan was an assistant coach. some wrote messages in prayer on big pieces of paper p

a slow little warmup in store and of course we will look ahead to the weekend. 9news reporter noel brennan, he was out in boulder today looking at the snowy side roads out there. he took his gopro along with him and he filed this report. >> reporter: the city of boulder is digging out after getting about 16.8 inches of snow from sunday night into tuesday morning. i want to show you what the side streets look like as a car here turns onto 8th street from pearl. you can see that this just totally is ice, much of the snow has been cleared away, but this is really slick out here. just like this. want to walk you over here and show you pearl, though, this is a little bit different as far as conditions go. there's quite a bit of snow left in the center of the road. it seems like all the snow has kind of gathered there, also it's just kind of slushy and underneath that slush is certainly some ice. so this is what folks out in boulder are dealing with this morning, it's kind of chilly out here as well but you know what? it's a beautiful day and at least the snow has stopped falling. >> noel, thank

the democrats in the house are noel brennan joins us live. noel, a similar bill failed last year. >> exactly, cory. just a year ago, senate republicans moved forward. a house committee decided to vote it down. we're likely to see the same happen with this new version. nevertheless, here is what this bill would change in colorado if it does make it through both the house and senate. right now, gun owners need a permit to carry a concealed handgun. the measure will do away with the requirement. the sponsor of the bill places an unnecessary burden on legal gun owners in colorado. senate democrats who voted against the plan yesterday, they argue that gun training would be needed to protect people who simply would not know when someone around them is carrying a gun. the bill passed the senate on a party line vote. it was 18-17. now it makes its way to the house. it is likely to see the same result as the bill that did not make it through the house last make it through the house and becomes law, colorado would be the 8th 8th state to allow permit. >
