southbound, slowing on the northbound side. that lanes are reported all cleared now, northbound 101 just cleared all lanes. this big jam from palo alto up through menlo park because of a jackknifed rig that has moved to the shoulder. distraction will be a delay but not enough to tell you to use el camino. you are okay for 101, plan on another ten minutes for that to start moving smoothly. dumbarton bridge will take you into the congestion. take march to 101. 92 clear of that. no problems through san mateo for 101. 280 clear of all of the activity. slower drive southbound through the nimitz freeway, union city, typical build. rest of the south bay with northbound routes kicking in, 101 capital expressway, slowing at 680. 87 and 85 kicking in with volume starting to ramp up. a couple of issues north of curtner and that caused more slowing. the tri-valley looking nice. you have slower burst we talked about right around airway. no incidents reported for 580 through livermore. the bust of traffic coming after the accident cleared. l

you're looking at northbound 17. it is littered with the debris and the wreckage from the ten vehicles involved in this horrible accident that, as you mentioned, has killed one driver, sent eight more people to the hospital. and the cause of this accident is that big rig right there in the foreground, which you can see, with its engine exposed. the driver, who was not hurt, confirmed to me off-camera that he did lose his brakes when he was traveling down 17 into los gatos before 8:00 with two trailers of dirt full behind him. in other words, a very heavy load. what happened next is awful, according to witnesses and chp. one driver told us he passed that big rig two miles back and could smell the brakes. and when he got to the bottom of the hill, he saw the big rig careening down the hill out of control, trying to weave through the morning commute traffic. he estimates was moving at 15 to 20 miles an hour. this witness believes the truck was going around 45 to 50 miles an hour. >> at this point, the back trailer just

but northbound 85 is still closed. that's because of a power line that came down after a power pole burned up and those lines came down. somehow the power -- well, it was up in flames. i saw firefighters on the yoef pass getting the lines out of the way just enough so that 85 traffic southbound can go through. in the next few minutes, things will improve on 85 coming from 101. unfortunately, northbound 85 on the left, kind of at the bottom of your screen is still closed. maybe they have de-energized the power lines. pg&e may have taken the lines out of service and de-energized them and that's the hope to see things improve. janine de la vega is on the ground. she will let us know. i see cars moving through. getting close. i can see janine's crew down there as well. you can use 280. you just can't get off on 85. have to keep going or you can use another exit. 85 southbound just reopened. you can wait for that backup to go away. 580 still a mess of an overturned truck. quickly to the bay bridge toll plaza, it's backed up

the monday do is on the back of the tow truck on the off-ramp of lawrence expressway off northbound 101. the c.h.p. identified the driver as 34-year-old san jose man. his wife was killed. he was arrested in the hospital and could face felony d.u.i. and vehicular manslaughter. the driver was speeding when the car flipped before 2:00 a.m. in sunnyvale. no one was wearing a seatbelt. firefighters arrived and ripped off the doors to get the victims four were taken to the hospital. the buy of the driver died on seen and the smell of alcohol was overwhelming. the surviving female it was her 23rd birthday and it looks like they were coming from a birthday celebration. >> the c.h.p. says two of victims were taken to stanford and the other two valley medical center considered a crime seen and the c.h.p. officers continue their investigation. when the car is out of ditch and off the tow truck and out of way it could be an hour before the off-ramp is back open. that is a big issue here as traffic on northbound 101 is backed up as people trying to get around this crime scene. c.h.p. is working here
