she's back in rockville where the judge just handed down a sentence, what is the latest?porter: that's right, that was handed down by the judge just moments ago. i want to tell you exactly how he phrased it. he said sam ellis is sentenced to 20's years, four of which he'll serve. five years probation with alcohol and drug treatment and another five years of no alcohol while driving plus an interlock device on his car and 500 hours of community service. i'll tell you, before announcing his sentencing, the judge spoke at length about this issue. he came down hard on the issue of drinking and drugs. he says this is a problem that we cannot continue to put a band-aid on. he says he sees cases like this drinking and someone ends up dying nearly every year. so you can tell this was an issue that the judge took to heart, and again, he spoke at length. even addressed sam ellis in the courtroom, and before this sentencing, sam ellis took the stand and he addressed the victim's families directly. he told them he was sorry. that he takes full responsibility for his actions. again, j

fox5's marina maracco has more from rockville. >>reporter: a highly emotional day in court today as the judge came down with his sentence for sam ellis. there were long faces, a lot of tears and deep shies. the judge ultimately sentencing sam ellis to four years behind bars and now this all comes after the state recommended 12 years out of the 20-year maximum penalty. sam ellis will serve those four years after the death of calvin lee anal ex america, all of them recent wooton high graduates who back in june of 2015 left a house party where alcohol was served. sam ellis was behind the wheel of the car. toxicology results showing that he had consumed alcohol and was also under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash. now, ellis pled guilty to two charges of m to avoid trial. they're considered non-violent charges, which means once he serves a quarter of that sentence, just one year, after the four he was sentenced to, then he'll be eligible for parole. there was gut wrenching evidence during the sentencing face which in
