>> reporter: we're here in the oakland hills, the crime scene is right behind me. there's police -- oakland police have the streets closed off, and there's a silver honda down the street, and that's where the situation occurred tonight. the information we're getting comes from troy flint, spokesperson for the oakland school strict. he says theirs two oakland school district police officers were patrolling the area because there was a party and a dance at the high school. they had to make a traffic stop. the made the stop, and when one of the officers weapon to the driver's window, the driver, according to flint, took a tool or a knife and tried to stab the officer. now, that's when all this started. the officer's life was apparently saved by the fact he was wearing a vest. the suspect went for a weapon, and that's when the other police officer fired into the car, killing the suspect. now, the suspect died at the scene. there was also another person in the car, a woman. she was injured. we don't know exactly what her injuries are. but she was taken away in an ambulan

today in the east bay's christie smith is live in oakland where there are a few questions over the raises that seem to come at an inopportune time. >> reporter: good morning. it certainly doesn't seem to add up. is it bad timing or odd plan altogether? principals in oakland are asked to cut 7% from their budgets but at the same time employees across the board are offered a 2% jump in their paychecks. this comes as the oakland school district considers layoffs and a plan to cut expenses by $12 million. the raise for employees we're told will cost schools about $2 million but has been factored in. and it's coming right after a parcel tax to raise salaries failed. a spokesperson says oakland teachers have gone quite a while without raises though they realize this may not be the best time to do this, still they are schmidt committed to making it happen. it's true, oakland teachers are among the lowest paid in the county and the teachers union president says she believes a raise is deserved but they don't want a situation where that would mean bigger class sizes in the long run. the top three

simon, good morning. >> reporter: a busy start to the new year for the oakland police department. last night, as you said, continued a string of shootings to start 2011. a little before 10 p.m., police officers found a man slumped behind the wheel of a car in west oakland near the intersection of 16th and center streets. he had been shot. no victim is 22-year-old alan collins. he lived in oakland. tuesday night six people were shot in east oakland. investigators say at least two people with rifles fired into a crowd. bullets not only hit the people gathered in the street but also pierced houses in the area. in fact, one of the people wounded was in his own home watching tv. that was 49-year-old jesus rocha a father of 4, listed in critical condition. the other five people were in the street and they are men between the ages of 19 and 23. now, police say this neighborhood is known for drug dealing but investigators are still trying to figure out exactly why these shootings happened. >> we're lucky that no one was killed out there. there's a lot of fire power that was used in this sh

, the second time this week. don knapp is in oakland. >> reporter: police have been on their hands and knees literally in the yard looking for evidence trying to understand what it was about what happened today that led officers to shoot a man with a fake gun. police say they shot and killed a man wielding what they called a replica assault weapon. one apparently not capable of firing a shot. the shooting came when police answered a call on taft avenue between college and broadway. as they approached the home they saw a man carrying the replica. >> as they got upstairs when the gentleman exited the home and confronted the officers armed with an automatic rifle. the officers immediately opened fire on the gentleman which ended his life. there were three officers that were involve in the shooting. we determined later on that the weapon was a replica assault weapon. >> reporter: while it may have been a difficult call for officers facing what they thought was an armed man, a visitor to the neighborhood saw it differently. >> it was a calm,
