justice for tyre.ichols was a father of a young son, an amateur photographer, and a longtime skateboarder. he had worked at fedex for the past nine months. on thursday, shelby county district attorney steve mulroy outlined the charges against the five police officers. >> second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping resulting in bodily injury. aggravated kidnapping involving the possession of a weapon. official misconduct through unauthorized exercise of power. official misconduct, failure to act when there is a duty imposed by law. and official oppression. while each of the five individuals played a different role in the incident in question , the actions of all of them resulted in the death of tyre nichols, and they are all responsible. amy: all five officers charged are african-american. they were all part of what's known as the scorpion unit, which stands for street crimes operation to restore peace in our neighborhoods. the five officers were all fired earlier this month after ty

joining me now is benjamin crump, attorney for the family of tyre nichols.e just learned this news that the specialized unit, the scorpion unit these five former police officers belong to has been disbanded. that has been a key demand from the family. does this give you and the family confidence that you're being heard? >> it certainly does, pamela. his parents rowvaughn and rodney wells, my cocounsel and i saw that that was part of the culture as responsible as those five officers were for killing tyre nichols and that reprehensible conduct we saw in that video, we think this was part of the culture of the scorpion unit. so we demanded that they disbanded immediately before we see anything like this happen again. other citizens have come to us and said that they also attacked us. there was one young man four or five days before this happened to tyre nichols who said he was simply going to get pizza. he stopped at the stop sign and they pulled him out, used all kind of profane language, threw him on the ground and put a gun to his head. he tried to report th

the charges came just 16 days after tyre nichols's death. a kind of rapid action happen mostly, probably, because of the newly elected shelby district a county -- who ran on a platform different -- address racial profiling and de-escalation training tactics. and the memphis chief of police has also spoken out about reforms, including on a national scale. the kind of timeline we have seen in the tyre nichols case is not the norm when it comes to police violence against black americans, especially when it comes to these killings that have been caught on video. in the 2014 you're killing of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald in chicago -- captured on dash cam video, it took nearly 14 months for the police officer who killed him to be charged. in 2019 it again took four months for a texas police officer to be charged in the killing of 44-year-old pamela turner. it took over three years for five police officers to be indicted in the 2019 brutal beating of unarmed ronald greene in baton rouge, which, again, was captured on body cam video. that's it for u

there are protests in memphis too, the city where tyre where tyre was killed. correspondent barbara plett usher is there. i am standing at the intersection because i was walking with a number of protesters going down the street and stopping traffic. they have not seen the video because they started out before it was released but they clearly felt this case was part of a larger struggle against police brutality especially against black people. they were carrying signs demanding an end to police terror. the video is difficult to watch, as predicted. you see the officers being very aggressive with tyre nichols they are using expletives as they tell him to show his hands. they fire what appears to be a taser towards him as he tries to run. they pull out a baton and beat him with it. he is also calling out for them to stop, and calling out for his mother a number of times, at one point a piercing shriek. the camera turns towards him and you see his face is bloodied and he in great distress. there is a lot of footage, about an hour of footage from a number of differe

would he done to tyre nichols?i mean, there were so many different mechanisms of injury there, i watched that. i got to tell you i watched this a few times, it's increasingly hard to watch. it gets worse each time you see how defenseless he is and how many different types of assaults he has, he's standing at one point, and there is these punches to the head and if he has while he's on the ground, there's kicks to the face. he's also a very thin guy and he's got these blows to torso and abdomen, you can get significant bleeding, one thing i will say, john, is that he was in the hospital a few days after he was ultimately taken there, and that means there's probably, they have more of an idea of exactly what the consequences of all those various blows and that beating was, they probably did scans of his brain and body and they may have had some idea. we know within a shrimp, he was unconscious, he was unable to breathe on that his own. so you know, even though he was still sort of talking a little bit moving around a

tyre nichols was not so at all.ctive as many of us are asking what happened before this? from a legal perspective how much does that matter? >> i think it is troubling for a couple reasons. the first question you are going to ask is why they stopped him in the first place. was it without spaces? just looking to find something? or giving people is the benefit of the doubt was he engaged in reckless driving? that gives you the ability and basis for the stop, but everything after that has to be legally justified in proper. the other question has to be more for them is tactically speaking i do not even think the experts need to answer that. is it an appropriate way to engage with someone when you are throwing f bombs at them? how about sir we are stopping you. may i see your license and registration. that escalation of it makes it right from the outset into an encounter which is not only dangerous but ends up to be deadly. i think we are going to see an examination of all of that. weather was lawful and legitimate. what
