vallejo's school district offices. alex is in vallejo now. this building was abandoned but it was not empty when fire crews got there? >> reporter: no, it was not. good morning. apparently according to firefighters there were squatters who had been living inside this building for quite some time. the building here that burned last night, you can see it was steroid by this huge fire and this used to house the main offices for the vallejo unified school district. there has been a fire crew that remained on scene throughout the night to keep an eye on hot spots and make sure nothing flares back up. everyone who was inside this building last night, they raced to get out as the place caught fire at 10:00. when vallejo firefighters first got here they did get reports of a man and dog still trapped inside the burning building but crews couldn't go inside right away. it took about an hour or so to knock down the flames and that is finally when firefighters were -- what firefighters were able to do, a room by room search and fo
