the controversy is escalating over what police say is a kidnapping hoax in vallejo. an attorney for a young woman at the center of the debate was a victim of a violent claim she said. amy hollyfield is joining us from vallejo with more. >> a lot has said about this police department in the last 24 hours. the department is not responding. it is not saying anything only that this investigation isn't complete. >> lawyers for position denise huskins and aaron quinn came out swing against the vallejo police department saying very emphatically their clients were victims of crimes. even though police told a different story. >> she is absolutely unequivocally 100 percent positively a victim and this is no hoax, no laughing matter. >> lawyers were responding to vallejo police who on wednesday night called the kidnapping of denise huskins for ransom an orchestrated event and found no evidence that a kidnapping happened. she disappeared monday and unked it unsafe in southern california on wednesday. yesterday, denise huskins spent the day interviewing with vallejo police and th

he's the director of public works here in vallejo. and, says his office is working to fix this growing and very expensive problem. kleinschmidt says these fires at private and city-owned buildings has resulted in more than two million dollars in damages. fire fighters also say battling flames at unoccupied buildings without electricity also presents and uneccessary saftey risk for their crews. kleinschmidt says the city has also torn down thr building that once stood here because of repeated homeless fires. others are slated for demolition like this old school district building. and, if private property owners aren't willing to fix their vacant buildings or tear them down and redevelop. kleinschmidt says the city will step in. >> "we will move forward with a dangerous building ordinance and deem it unsafe and actually take it upon ourselves to do the demolition and put the cost of the demolition onto the tax rolls for hopefully ultimately reimbursing the city for those costs. i know of at least two that we're working with our attorney

vallejo's school district offices. alex is in vallejo now. this building was abandoned but it was not empty when fire crews got there? >> reporter: no, it was not. good morning. apparently according to firefighters there were squatters who had been living inside this building for quite some time. the building here that burned last night, you can see it was steroid by this huge fire and this used to house the main offices for the vallejo unified school district. there has been a fire crew that remained on scene throughout the night to keep an eye on hot spots and make sure nothing flares back up. everyone who was inside this building last night, they raced to get out as the place caught fire at 10:00. when vallejo firefighters first got here they did get reports of a man and dog still trapped inside the burning building but crews couldn't go inside right away. it took about an hour or so to knock down the flames and that is finally when firefighters were -- what firefighters were able to do, a room by room search and fo
