abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman is live in weed right now with the firefight. wayne?er: dan, i heard the bomb analogy a lot. they say it looked like a bomb and sounded like apocalypse now. this is a neighborhood in front of me, behind me, around me. nothing but burnscape. this was a house. it's hard to tell at this point. this is a neighborhood with 150 structures that have been burned to the ground. many of them homes and businesses. the county has already asked the state to declare this a disaster area. just one day ago, this was a neighborhood. the town of weed was whole. not anymore. >> that one was gary's. this one here was robo's. >> reporter: his name is travis. he's one of the lucky ones in weed, where a wildfire roared out of the nearby trees and took 150 hoernlmes, businesses and structures. the word devastation neither strong ndescriptive enough. >> there were ashes blowing in the air. >> there's nothing left. >> reporter: not in the fire's path. residents say it moved a mile in less than half an hour driven by high winds. too much, too fast says cal fire.

>> not at all. >> reporter: wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >>> fire crews in yosemite counted on calmer winds today to get the upper hand on a wild fire that is forcing hikers to evacuate. take a look at the smoke as it moved across half dome in this time lapse video from a national park service web camera. lightning sparked the fire. the four square mile blaze quadrupled in size yesterday with strong winds just fanning the flames. rescue crews used helicopters to reach hikers threatened by the fire. nearly 100 people had to be evacuated. >>> a fire broke out this afternoon on a classic wooden roller coaster near los angeles, part of the colossus collapsed at six flags magic mountain. the amusement park was closed at the time of the fire and had recently shut down the roller coaster which dates back to 1978. crews were converting the ride into a modernized wood and steel coaster when the fire broke out. >>> businesses in san francisco's mission district are still feeling the effects of last week's huge fire. mission street which closed since thursday's blaze finally reopened to traffic

abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman joins us live in napa with that story. wayne? >> reporter: it was about a week and a half ago we were in napa reporting how fema was giving money back to the infrastructure, to the city and county. still local businesses don't have any federal money, nor do local people who are recovering from the earthquake. there are $10 million that have been promised by local companies for the community but so fashr, only $1 million has landed in their hands. why? it's complicated. in napa, this is an unfortunate sign of the times for small business owners. this tropical fish store owner for five more days. last month's earthquake left him with nine tanks out of 130. that's not the worst of it. here's the twist. >> i need my customer base back. a lot of my customers, up to 50% lost their fish tanks in the earthquake. they have no desire to put them back up. >> reporter: it's one small business challenge in a community stacked with them. one month after the quake, napa still has plenty of scaffolds and red tags, a few tourists. what small busi

. >> abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman with the story. wayne? >> reporter: they are frustrated. imagine having a job and having a child and trying to balance the two. behind me, the play ground at the bridgeport academy, the last day there will be children here. it is closing, it is closing unexpectedly. let's begin with the director. >> we have been struggling for awhile. i didn't realize how bad it was. >> reporter: now the bridgepoint school in novato, the staff knows and also the parents. last weekend the school announced it is closing, effective mehe fek immediately, leaving parents scrambling for new places to put their kids. >> school is already in session. it's a last minute situation for our kids. >> reporter: the school had 50 students. even today, several parents who never got the word dropped their kids off and found staff here to help them anyway, even though they lost their jobs and their last paychecks bounced. >> we can't make everything better for everybody. that's very frustrating. >> reporter: the school's owner did not go on camera today. in an e-mail, she to

wayne freedman reports. >> here's the good in us in napa.ree weeks since the quake and downtown is coming on strong. sure in places it still looks like a disaster area but at least the federal government now recognizes that fact. so why isn't linda cordair who owns an art gallery thrilled at the prospect of federal assistance? >> it's not more clear-cut. if the aid is there, it needs to be there across the board. >> business owners aren't everybody nor are homeowners or renters. this declaration unlocks fundamentals but only for the city and county infrastructure thus far. jill techel is both optimistic and disappointed. >> i don't know what happens in the process in washington. i'm hoping they're quicker with our are individual assistance requests. >> annan fulfilled till now for home and business owners. just off main streetalgia bar rin showed us where a rack of wine fell over. he estimated the quick cost a quarter of a million dollars. they're still hurting >> usually they offer like zero interest rate loans or something for businesses.

. >> reporter: from the ashes, in weed, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >>> so much of the progress on that fire in weed depends on the winds. abc 7 meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the weather. >> as we take a look at our red flag warning, it covers the area of weed until tomorrow night with good reason. take a look at the current conditions up in that area near the weed fire. we are basically looking at gusty winds, 84 degrees, relative humidity is 24%. wind out of the southeast to 21, gusting to 32. the strong winds along with low humidity and dry fuels will keep that fire danger up. it will make it a fight for the firefighters. i will be back with a detailed look at the potential for rain helping them battle that fire and for us here in the bay area with the drought situation. i'll be back with those details. >>> nearly 6,000 firefighters are on the job right now trying to contain a dozen wildfires across the state, including the fire in weed. >> the king fire has destroyed more than 11,000 acres. it's only 5% contained. it is burning north of highway 15 between sacramento and so

in napa, wayne freedman abc7 news >> firefighters are bracing for a big shift that could threaten containment efforts. a red flag warning and possibility of strong winds are forecast for tomorrow. the fire is threatening about 21,000 structures in the area near pollock pines. containment at 18%. >> smoke has been blowing toward lake tahoe. now there is a smoke advisory for this area. spencer christian is here now with details. >> there are calm conditions here. notice there is a strong sharp shift in the winds today winds have been blowing west. this is more blowing in that direction from the fires just west of lake tahoe. you get into reno and beyond we have a red flag warning for high fire danger. this area north because of the expected increase in winds will be dry winds, temperatures expected to rise. not good firefighting conditions. >> thank you. >> and the cost of the firefighting effort this year went over the top today. cal fire has now spent it's annual budget. reporter patrick walker looks at the price we're paying. >> a important part of the fire fight happens in this office. this

wayne freedman is in the newsroom with the latest on the fire. >> all of that, dan. this is the fire season they warned us about. that warning has come on the roof. we saw it in weed this week with more than 100 homes burned we see it in at least nine major fires and among those we see it on highway 50 and still-growing king fire. >> a plume of smoke hundreds of miles from this blaze now covering 119 square miles. up close, it's furious and hungry. authorities believe they know who started it. >> he was taken into custody. in placerville. >> wayne allen huntsman entered a plea of not guilty and could serve ten years to life for the fire costing $5 million per day to fight. cal fire dropping 275 gallons of the stuff and thick smoke has been a hindrance. >> air quality is not allowing much air traffic out there we need to see where they would be best utilized. >> firefighters did see burned structures near pollock pines but it could be worse. according to the latest update, the blaze threatened structures. by sunday, it could spread to solano, napa and sonoma counties.
