"action news" reporter katherine scott is live along atlantic avenue with the latest. katherine. >> reporter: well, matt, no one was injured in all of this. everyone was able to get out safely but there's a lost damage here. 17 people are being assisted by the red cross and throughout the morning we keep seeing these flareups. wind gusts have been causing problems for firefighters but they do seem to be making progress. you can still see they're blasting water at thisly site but we haven't seen the flames shooting from the top of the building in the last 10 minutes or so like we had througho

there are still flames coming from the top of this row of buildings here in atlantic city. they're being fueled by these strong wind gusts that we have been seeing overnight. it was around 10 o'clock last night when the fire broke out on the 1100 block of atlantic of a here in atlantic city. firefighters were on the scene in two minutes. firehouse is right down the street. and when they arrived 10 people had already gotten out on their own. officials say the fire started in the front of a business called ac alterations. the flames tour through nearby businesses in the upstairs apartments affecting four buildings. firefighters were met with multiple challenges here overnight. several floors collapsed, as did a fire wall but no firefighters were injured. no civilians were either. the wind has been propelling these flames. >> right now the wind is a factor. pushing the fire from the burned areas to the unburned. it's not good for usism back here live you can see some of the flames out the top of this building and fire crews still at work here along this stretch of atlantic aven

nbc 10's katy zachry is live in atlantic city this morning. katy, you've been showing us the battle that firefighters have had all morning. what's the situation now? >> reporter: well, chris, a few hours ago, firefighters tell us they thought they had this fire under control, but then the hotspots started flaring up. and fortunately, that is all that they're seeing right now and have for last few hours, these hotspots limited to the attic area. this is a very different story, though, than what firefighters were dealing with just after 10:00 at the height of the fire, which we have video of. they are right now in their seventh hour of fighting this fire. wind has been a major factor, according to the fire chief, spreading this fire to as many as five adjacent buildings, which house businesses on the first floor and then apartments above. the chief tells us if the wind were blowing in the opposite direction, the damage would only be limited to about two buildings. several buildings, he says, are a total loss. inside, the second floor has collaps
