ktvu's alex savidge joins us live with the chief's response. alex? >> reporter: well, good afternoon. police chief greg suhr said today his officer had no choice but to open fire on an armed parolee last week. he and other members of the department, holding that meeting here inside cornerstone church in the mission. they are providing more details about the police shooting of an armed parolee. it was one that sparked angry demonstrations. as the meeting got started, the chief revealed the identity of the man shot. he says the 29-year-old man, a known gang member, was the plan shot by police. police say they were trying to talk with them on a curfew check. he pulled out a tech .9 handgun on a couple of plain clothes officers and one of those officers opened fire, hitting the suspect twice. he's expected to survive. the chief also said this morning the man who was shot was paroled for a double shooting. one of the victims in that case, a 15-year-old. >> these officers on thursday night were exactly where any were supposed to be doing exactly what they

ktvu's alex savidge is live near lee and lake merritt where the shooting happened and has new details. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: well, good afternoon. this was an off-duty police officer who refused to be a victim, opening fire on the suspect. this was not an oakland police officer. they will not say who he works for. investigators say it turns out, the robber, he was holding a fake gun. the suspect was taken to the hospital in stable condition. he got more when he bargained for when he tried to rob a man and a woman on this street. investigators say one of the victims turned out to be an off off-duty police officer. he pulled a gun and fired on the suspected robber. >> i heard a number of shots. i'm not exactly sure how many. three, four, all in rapid suction and then i heard some -- successtion and then i heard somebody yelling down! down! >> reporter: the officer and his wife were by the trunk. >> he withdrew his service revolver and fired a tu times. >> reporter: the suspected robber shot was involved in at least two other holdups earlier in the night in this same area of

alex savidge is there. what do you know? >> reporter: in talking with police this morning they don't know a whole lot about this man found shot to death in the street. this homicide investigation still unfolding out here. you can see behind me it has macarthur boulevard shut down at market street. the shooting appears to have taken place about halfway down the block on the right side of the street. right in front of a car. that is where this man's body is still sitting right in the roadway at this point. everything happened just after 2:00 this morning when police got 911 calls from neighbors about gunfire in this area. officers showed up and obviously found the victim. we watched as they searched the area looking for any sort of evidence they could find. looking in backyards driveways and near homes. investigators don't have any sort of description on the shooter involved in this inspect. but what this is doing is potentially causing a traffic issue this morning because macarthur boulevard is entirely shut down and it leads

alex savidge is there. alex. >> reporter: good morning.eo police and the superintendent will be meeting with parents later this morning here at parkside elementary school to talk about that kidnapping from last week. even though a man has been arrested in connection with the brazen crime, a lot of parents are still on edge. it was last friday when a stranger came on to campus here and kidnapped a nine-year-old girl from a school bathroom. she eventually managed to escape. prosecutors filed charges against 25-year-old bradley mrozak. san francisco. he groped that girl, put his hand over her mouth, and carried her off of campus. police say eventually the girl fought back and was able to get away as the man tried to bring her to a house in this area. the assistant superintendent told ktvu she is surprised this happened on campus and says the district will look the what more can be done to keep kids safe. >> i would anticipate there will be changes. along the lines of closing campuses and not letting parents on campus to wait for their childre

ktvu alex savidge is in san francisco now. you have details of what is ahead. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. police chief greg suhr will be heading up this community meeting. it will happen later on this morning later on inside the corner stone church. he will be talking more about this police shooting that sparked protests last week. it was thursday night when a plained closed police officer opened fire on a 22-year-old parolee. police say that young man pointed a tech nine gun at the officer and refused to drop it. the officer shot him twice but that young man is expected to survive. that officer involved shooting prompted two straight nights of angry demonstrations in the mission. protestors smashed windows on businesses including banks and spray painted a police station. no arrests were made and officers have been able to maintain peace in the area. they are hoping they can ease tensions here by offering more details on last week's shooting. answering questions from community members, town hall meeting happened at 11:30. it's here at the corn

alex savidge joins us from uc berkeley with more. >> reporter: good morning. the u.s. ambassador to libya that was killed in that attack grew up here in northern california. he graduated from uc berkeley back in 1982. after that he received a degree from uc hastings college of law. according to libyan officials chris stevens and three other embassy employees were killed in an attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. shooting employees and set fire to the building as well. they are all angry over a viral video that mocks mohammed. he went to the consulate and was trying to evacuate staff members. this is after the building came after attack. now at this point this morning, the state department is not confirming that stevens has been killed. but they are not giving many details on that particular attack. only saying one person was killed in the attack. waiting for more details throughout the morning. alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >>> now just a short time ago, president obama released a statement it says in part quote i strongly condemn the outrainous attack on our dip

ktvu alex savidge joins us live to let us know when this will happen and what it lean means for drivers. good afternoon alex. >> reporter: good afternoon. the folks here at the golden gate expect there will be an adjustment period for drivers. once this new electronic system is up and rink the message for -- their message for folks coming here slow down and hang on to your cash. the golden gate is going all electronic and the roll out will begin in december. 32 toll taker positions are being eliminated here. once the electronic system is in place they can use fast track or set up what is called a pay by play account. there are be payment locations will go up through the the area. they believe this new system will ease the flow of traffic. >> it does create customer conveniences. here at the golden gate bridge we anticipate seeing improvements in the flow of traffic during our peak periods of congestion. >> reporter: another reason the golden gate is going all electronic is the financial savings. the bridge district expects to save $19 million over the next eight years. but the switch ov

ktvu alex savidge is out there this morning with the demonstration that broke out hours after a police shooting. alex. >> reporter: the protestors were outraged by a police shooting a few hours before. they came here to the mission police station and vandalized the front of the building. spray painting the word killers on the front door. this is all part of a spontaneous demonstration that break out around 7:30 last night. eventually they surrounded the police station here where officers in riot gear were standing guard. when it was all said and done no one was arrested and no one was hurt here and the protestors were clearly focusing their anger on police after an officer shot a man earlier in the night. >> people see right through it. >> reporter: the shooting that sparked that demonstration happened around 8:00 last night. plain clothes officers with the gang task force spotted two people they recognized as gang members. one of those members ran from officers and pulled a tech 9 pistol. officers ordered him to drop that gun. the armed man was hit twice taken to the hospital but is e

alex savidge has been there since 4:30. you know more about the victims now. . >> reporter: good morning, dave. i spoke with the victim's grandmother a short time ago. essentially she told me the victims in this case her grandson and her grandson spreeing inapt girl -- pregnant girlfriend was shot inside this house. relatives tell me there was a child also in the house. they showed up consulling one another. this was just after 9:00 when the 911 calls came in. gunfire was heard come from this home. when officers got here they found a 31-year-old man and 28- year-old woman dead. relatives tell me there was a 2.5-year-old boy home at the time the murders took place. and the boy was not hurt. police though are not confirming the information about the child. a short time ago i talked with a sergeant out here on scene and i asked him about what the possible motive could be for these murders. why were they targeted? >> that is what we are trying to find out. we are gathering evidence trying to piece together what happened and at that point we'll figure out why it hap

live in orinda, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. >>> 7:38. sal's back. how are we doing so far in our commute, sal? >> we've had a lot of slow traffic especially on the east bay freeways. let's take a look at 880 northbound. we had an earlier car fire, we also had some slow traffic approaching downtown oakland. you can see it's not a very good drive at all. people driving into the downtown oakland area, give yourself extra time to negotiate the commute because of all of the slow traffic we have. 58 is not much of an alternate. we've had a lot of slow traffic on 580 coming out of san leandro, over to the lakeshore curve and there is a report of a stalled truck on the san mateo bridge. the traffic is at a standstill. i recommend the dumbarton bridge as an alternative. this is not moving quickly. they are aware of this. now, across the bay, southbound 101 in san mateo, there is a crash at highway 92. that traffic has been affected because the traffic is slow, i would say use 280 instead of 101 this morning, heading down the peninsula. i want to move the map

ktvu alex savidge at the mission police station and you've been out there since 4:30 and they are cleaning up the damage caused alex. >> reporter: and the damage has been cleaned up here. the protesters last night they were angry about what ended up being a nonfatal police shooting. after it happened, protesters took to the streets and ended up vandalizing the mission police station and officers all morning as you can see over here, have been keeping watch out in front of the station throughout the night. early this morning, city crews came in and cleaned up the graffiti. some spray painted the words killers on the front door of the station. this upon stainous -- spontaneous demonstration broke out last night. several marched through the streets and one point they came and surrounded the station and there were officers in riot gear standing guard at that time. during the protest, someone spray painted the police station itself. no arrest endeded up being made and no one was hurt but anger over the shooting was evident. >> do something corrupt and evil people can see it. people see right th

alex savidge is live where you just talked to a parent attend egg the meeting. ning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. parents are anxious. one mom i talked to a few minutes ago said she contemplated pulling her son south of school. she's attending the safety meeting. it just got underway. you can see some parents just beyond us here who will be attending that meeting. the superintendent and san mateo police will be caulking -- will be talking about this campus kidnapping. they will be happening about how the school will step up security. locks are peaking -- are being put on all of the gates. parents could also have more limited time in pickups and dropoffs. the attacker groped the girl, put his hand on her -- over her mouth and carried her campus. the district says this is a very unusual event. >> knowing how many people can be on campus, it's not that surprising. i think all of the san mateo schools are like that. >> i'm not that surprised. >> prosecutors have filed charges against a 25-year-old man from san francisco. he's the accused kidnapper and was arraign

alex savidge has been on the scene all morning long. >> they tell me the victim was a 24-year-old young area. he was generous and he was kind-hearted. you can see behind me the crime scene is now cleared but this was a homicide investigation and it shut down macarthur boulevard at market street. they took away the man's body. a man showed up at the crime scene telling officers the victim in this case was his son. he was found shot to death in the middle of the street. this is after 2:00 in the morning. they got calls about gunfire in the area. they focused their interest on a black jetta. again, in talking with relatives this morning. they he tell me a little bit about this man. and the man who was killed here happens to be the grand son of a former mayor of emoryville. that is according to the victim's brother. police have not positively identified the person killed this morning. they don't have a whole lot to go on as far as a description for the shooter in this case. >> in oakland, alex savidfe, ktvu news. >>> they are investigating the reports of a theft of copies of presidential ca
