>> that's right, dana. drivers want relief from the rapidly rising prices, and the span of a day here at this marathon station in cincinnati, we have seen the price go up 24 cents. it was $4.15 earlier. now $4.39. that's above the national average according to aaa, which is $4.37 now. a new all-time record. it was $4.20 a week ago. $4 .12 a month ago. just an idea how of fast these prices are rising. some folks hunting around for the best prices. here in the cincinnati metro, they're going over the river into kentucky where you might get some little better prices there. you know, we talked to chris west, a driver here. she says that she just wants to go to florida with her husband. they have been planning on doing this for a while. they haven't been able to do it. they were thinking of driving there, but because gas prices are so high, they're now thinking of flying. listen. >> i'm stretching it out. i'm not going as many places. we tend to take my husband's car, which gets better gas mileage. just really a

i think it was smart of dana to mention rick scott and ron desantis. i would add tim kaine. when i worked for eric canner, whenever the virginia tech shooting would come up, the tone he would talk about people who worked at the time in the virginia delegation changed. they became subdued. they talked with awe in respect to the process that tim kaine brought into this to bring disparate groups and disparate interests together to get something done. and we hear so often, laura -- dana knows this so well -- especially around issues like this that we have to do something. and when you talk about doing something without being specific, it makes it very hard. i know when dana would call me from time to time in really tough moments in the capital, i could tell her about what we wanted to do and what we hoped we could do. it was hard to talk about what we could do and what we would do. we're starting to see difference in that now, and i think red flag laws may be the first place we can go with that. >> one of the concerns i have in just thinking about this story, we're talking about

we've got abbey philip, david chalian, and dana bash and back with us here.he primary. we're learning that in terms of where things stand about 56% or more of the votes are in, and you've got jd vance who seems to be about 40,000 votes or more ahead. are you surprised? >> well, i mean that's the intention of a trump endorsement is for his candidate to go from being kind of in the middle or near the back of the pack to being in the front. and i think it goes to show really there's not much that has happened that has waned trump's influence on the republican party. vance was one of many of these candidates who were vying for trump's endorsement, trying to be as close to trump as possible. he happened to win the endorsement, and it worked for him. i also think it's notable that trump's endorsement came as early voting was already under way in that state. so i think it just emphasizes that even a relatively late endorsement seemed to have given vance just enough juice to kind of beat out the competitor. and also when you have the race split between so many candid

dana, if all five of these republican lawmakers refuse to comply, what then? >> well, the committee actually has more tools in its tool box with sitting members of congress than with others. like the former member who was of course chief of staff, mark meadows. they could, maybe the ultimate is to hold them in criminal contempt and refer back. they could say that they should be held in civil contempt and make that reference. but my understanding is the more likely if any or none of these five sitting republican congressmen do not comply with this committee's request, they could take more administrative punishment and they have tools like first and foremost, the ethics committee. if you're a sitting member of congress, you are still susceptible to the rules governed by the body of the house inside the ethics committee and by not complying with the committee subpoena that presumably would violate an ethics rule. and more administrative tools they could use. they could say, well, either the congressman or even the leader, kevin mccarthy, there could be a vote, a

i'm dana bash in washington where the state of our union is feeling anxious. president biden is in japan on his first trip to asia after taking office. as he tries to focus on his international agenda, problems are piling up back home. the first anes from "operation fly formula" arrive today as the administration scrambles to get baby formula back onto u.s. shelves. but the white house still has not offered a time frame for when families would begin to see the effects of these measures. anyone watching their 401(k) friday might have regretted looking as the markets continue their longest selloff in decades, dipping briefly into bear market territory and increasing concerns for some that the u.s. could be heading towards a recession. americans are already dealing with inflation and soaring gas prices and if that's not enough, covid-19 cases are rising again across the country, and president biden said this morning, everyone should be concerned about monkeypox. and it's not a climate that makes governing very easy, especially five months away from the midterm el
