there is an emmett till school in chicago, there is then emmett till bridge. the home where he lived in downtown chicago in 1955 is currently vacant but there is work afoot to reclaim it. the home where he grew up as a kid next to wheeler parker which is about a baseball field west of, not o'hare, what is a small airport? midway, about a baseball throw for midway. that home is no longer there but the site is there and it is now paved with bricks. you can buy these bricks, there is a sign there. about a block away from that is the chicago version of the emmett till memorial center. the short answer is yes. chicago has always been ahead. one of the brand-new developments, 2019, 2020, is that the family in chicago has really in unprecedented ways joined forces with the nonprofit in mississippi to connect the commemorative work do going on in chicago to the commemorative work going on in mississippi. you can sign this petition online, there is a current project to create, what's the word here? a discontinuous national park with sites in both chicago and mississipp

this is where emmett tilwhistled. this is what the building looked like at the time of the murder in august, 1945. the years have not been kind to bryant grocery. before i tell you the story i just want to click through some images. this is the building in the 80s, 9, the 2000s. it was hurricane kathat took the roof of bryant's grocery and a portion of its north wall. and the roof. this is the winter of 20, this is one of my favorites from 2011. if you remember that sign i showed you at the beginning, the one was scrubbed with acid. i told you that sign claims that this building is ground zero of the civil rights movement. isn't it a little bit odd that the building marked as ground zero of the civil rights movement would be allowed to fall into ruin? it didn't just happen that way. it was intentional. this is the story, how grounds zero of the movement fell into ruin. now although you cannot tell by looking, in 2011 in the town of money, that is the name of the town, it's a weird town. money, mississippi. it was a be

and i would just like to say emmett's story, emmett was not trying to do civil rights. these people weren't trying to integrate or do what should be done and they got no recognition and emmett was not the first person to be killed by a long shot but he still speaks and ms. parks told the story that she thought about emmett till. i don't know what you are saying but i'm open. you say you are going to help us. and i applaud you because we need to do something and it can only be done by us. professor can you help us? >> i think within the school system itself my curriculum as a u.s. history teacher at the 11th grade level is civil rights so it's my responsibility to teach the standards to my students and it would be a total travesty to not teach that history especially emmett's history given an event that changed the nation. it gradually turned into triumph and there is a national effort to stifle the teaching of civil rights content. there is a lot of controversy over the so-called critical race theory. i just view it as telling the truth as to what happened and as educat

and what did you know about emmett till going into your addition?as far as information-wise, i didn't know everything. i didn't know in such detail. i really only knew the tragic events that happened to him. and i was kind of told to me as a cautionary tale, a means to prevent something like that from ever happening to me. my mom was the one who share the story with me. but even she didn't know in great detail about the series of events like we do now, with going through the production. so, when embodying a human beings like this, there is the research that you do. to try to gain those traits and those aspects and understand the time period so the dialect and things of that nature. but it's also, like, conveying a authentic accurate 14 year old boy, a joyful boy. a curious boy. and that was my approach on it to really fall into that sort of dynamic. i was 14 when we film this. >> yeah. that had to be hard though, because we live in an era where this is happening to children. >> right. >> it's happening to boys and girls and trayvon martin traumatize

i found in talking to a lot of these people that martin is the emmett hill of the generation and that very moving and surprising to me. it made me think that was nine years ago. if you're 20 that means that happened when you were 11 and if you are 11, you are old enough to get what's happening but also old enough to ask the question is why does the world have to be this way. and if that really i think stuck with people in a big way. the of of their civil rights movement parallel that comes to mind is when you think of something like the montgomery bus boycott. this was an issue about respect and about jim crow on the bus lines. that's what people were fighting around. but the powers that be in montgomery not to mention the powers throughout the jim crow a south saw it as a much bigger threat if they are talking about bus lines today, who knows what they will be talking about tomorrow it's like pulling the strings on a sweater and i think that is similar to all these other young people who took the knee. like yes they were doing it for racial equity and they were doing it against polic
