i'm george spencer in south philly. the final green light that project just proceeds and the jobs impact they expect. >> i'm mo next to braxton. four gun shot victims are recovering. one is in critical condition. three are stable. a fifth victim is over at einstein medical center. our camera captured this scene at north swanson and somerset in north philadelphia. police found a 20-year-old male, 21-year-old female and 36-year-old male all shot here. after combing the scene the forensic unit marked 15 shell casings they believe were fired. two men wearing masks and dark clothing fled. police are questioning a female who may have been the intended driver of the getaway car. police say at 1130 last night gun shots awakened nab irns the 5900 block of palmetto. when police got there they found one 19-year-old male shot in the back, a second male was hit in the leg. he was located, though, six blocks away. both of those teens are in stable condition, police tell us so far no one is talking so they are reviewing surveillance v

nbc 10's george spencer has been closely following this trial. he joins us live in center city. george, this is a family that's looking for some closure. >> reporter: they absolutely are, vai. jury deliberations, as you mentioned, started about 9:30 this morning, officially got under way, so the jury has only been working on this case for about an hour and a half now. but zabel's family here from minnesota is anxiously awaiting that verdict and, as you mentioned, hoping for some final relief some seven and a half years after the original crime. beau zabel was a teaching fellow who had just moved to the city of philadelphia for a program at drexel when he was killed back in june of 2008. in the time before his classes began, he was working at a starbucks coffee shop on south street. he had just closed the store that june night when he was gunned down for his ipod near the italian market as he was walking home. now, the defendant in this case, marcellus jones, is already serving a life sentence for the murder of a different man, that man believed to be the getaway driver on the nig

nbc 10's george spencer is live for us on the scene in frankfurt. he has been tracking developm t developments since early this morning. george, give us an update. >> reporter: vai, the fire department tells us one of their crews had installed smoke detectors in the home where this fire started just three years ago. the damage on this block was significant, but officials say the fire very well might have been deadly if those alarms were not working. >>> through the flashing red lights we washed firefighters work early this morning. a 5:30 a.m. fire consumed three row homes here while many residents were still fast asleep. >> i woke up my girls, i said "get up, it's a fire. i don't know if it's here, but it's a fire." my girled jumped out of the bed. when i opened the front door, the fire was right on my front. >> reporter: marlene tejeda and her daughters made it out safely but you could see the damage to her home and the neighboring properties, including the house where that fire started. residents of the home, including two little girls, jumped to

[ applause ] >> reporter: this emotional delaware father could barely say thank you enough, wiping tears from his eyes as he was comforted by the fire chief. we watched an abundance of community support hand delivered by firefighters on this christmas eve. >> it's overwhelming, and you saw tears, but they were tears of joy. >> reporter: just back on monday, many of those same firefighters responded to chris scarborough's home as hit burned to the ground, captured in this video. it was a total loss for scarborough, his wife and their five children, just before the holidays. >> you look back and you're like, that's my house. it doesn't seem real at all. >> reporter: after the fire, these firefighters decided they had to do something, so they put the call out on social media and from there, their plan grew beyond what any of them expected. an overwhelming response? >> absolutely. the community heres a gone above and beyond. >> reporter: the fire chief says donations came from

george spencer spent 45 minutes with the mayor this afternoon. and george, he says poverty remains the city's biggest challenge at the end of his term. >> reporter: jacqueline, more than one in five philadelphians still lives below the poverty line. it is certainly not a new problem in this city, but it is the issue on which the mayor says he is most focused on a personal level as he prepares to leave office here at the end of the week. mayor sat down with us, as you said, for about 45 minutes this afternoon, and as we talked, he said the poverty issue is so difficult to overcome in philadelphia, precisely because it's been an issue for so long. he believes the generations of local families all living in poor economic circumstances are holding the city back perhaps more than anything else. he says it's the result of the system failing its own citizens. he described poverty as an all hands on deck concern, one which he promises to work tirelessly on, even when he's no longer the city's top leader. >> we've had a poverty rate over 20% for 30-plus ye

we are live this morning in north philadelphia, i'm george spencer, nbc 10 news. >> it is 6:03. the father says his son's killer got away with murder. he was murdered seven years ago. he was charged but yesterday a jury found him not guilty. after that not guilty verdict was read, bo zabel's family gathered at the spot where bo was shot to death. they tell us they are now looking for a higher justice. >> well, he'll be in prison. the thing is he thinks he got away with it. he thinks he got over. that's it. >> jones sounded his thanks for the jury after his acquittal. he is serving a life sentence for another murder. >> investigators are looking for the cause of a fire at a camden county auto repair shop. they used a drone to take video of the blaze. the fire started at around 6:00 last night in an auto repair bay. 75 firefighters from several departments spent hours battling these flames. >> it was real. it was going through the roof. there was a live explosion. >> it was plaque, the smell of it was disgusting. >> making matters worse, fire officials say people inside the buildi

nbc 10's george spencer is live in north philadelphia. george, this proposal is getting push back from the community. >> reporter: it is, vai. the meeting today at the university board of trustees to decide what comes next for the stadium plan. there will not be an opportunity for formal public comment during today's meeting. so community groups are rallying before to express opposition. plans for this stadium, 35,000 seats, is going to be built on this site. the current geesy field. no matter what those teams are moving to a new nearby practice field. the university says it already has support from private donors for this $100 million stadium planned and the money currently spent in rent for use of the linc would instead go to pay off bonds for the project. while many students here at temple are supportive critics say the new stadium would bring unwanted crowds, noise, and parking headaches for neighbors. >> going to build that thing, it's going to cause more problems. they tear up our flowers, they tear up my -- tear up everything. not j

nbc 10's george spencer sat down with district attorney seth williams today. orter: yeah, keith. he insists really the bulk of the blame goes to attorney general kathleen kane in all of this and her piecemeal release of the emails in all of this. he said he would consider further discipline against the three prosecutors in his office if more evidence against them comes out. it is images like these, sometimes pornograph ig, sometimes demeaning to women and minorities which ignited a statewide scandal when released by attorney general kathleen kane. among the names of judges and prosecutors involved in the email chain, three men currently working through d.a. seth williams. the d.a. acknowledges the inappropriate tone of the emails impacts his office. >> yes, it does put a taint on the system. something that we work very hard to reform. >> reporter: williams' stance has changed. he says based on more emails being released. in late summer when the scandal began his office said the men would be given sensitivity training but remain in their roles since the emails o

. >> let's talk to nbc 10's george spencer. george, you spoke to a security expert what police are doing. >> reporter: obviously details from california slow and tricking out. local law enforcement experts puzzling over the who, what, when, where, why. what authorities are seeing on the ground. they are telling us they are certain that california authorities are reviewing the 911 calls from this morning. trying to get a sense whether multiple callers in fact saw multiple shooters on the scene or whether multiple callers reported in a single shooter at slightly different type times. the other big issue experts say, experts on the groundworking to figure out how the scope of this building plays into all of it. as you were mentioning a government building on a large campus, some medical building there. it is a lot of space for law enforcement to clear and neutral eyes its threat. take a listen. >> a lot of areas, a lot of area to cover. >> what does that mean for law enforcement? >> means a long day. you have to search every room.

fight that broke out between volunteer and career firefighters at a house fire in prince george's county. darcy spencerive desk. >> wendy this fight was apparently about who was in charge at a fire scene and it got physical. two female career firefighters have pressed charges against those volunteers. according to a statement of charges, jeff miller and christopher kelly have been charged with assault and obstruction of firefighters. they are both volunteers with the fire station. the assault allegedly happened at a house fire on december 8th. according to a statement of charges the women say they were first on the scene of that fire and they were running hose lines into the home when they were physically blocked by christopher kelly. he allegedly elbowed and pushed one firefighter backward and hit the second firefighter. the statement also says jeff miller pulled one of the women out of the house until other firefighters intervened. the county fire chief strongly condemned this incident and changed protocols on fire scenes. we'll have more on the story tonight at 11:00. back to you. >> darcy spencer.

breaking news in prince george's count there afternoon, a man's body found in a playground in lanham, chopper 4 over the scene on 97th avenue near gaywood elementary and darcy spencer joins us now with an update from the police. darcy? >> wendy, prince george's county police updating that this is, in fact, a homicide and that the victim was stabbed to death and the scene is unfortunately, the grounds of a prince george's county elementary school, gaywood elementary and you can see it behind me. from what i understand the body was found in the basketball court area behind the school. at this point police are only saying that the victim is an adult male. we don't have an age yet. we're really not sure what this was about. they got the call around 4:00 this afternoon. apparently the victim was here in this area with some other people so there were, in fact, witnesses. let's hear a little bit now from that press conference. >> we have strong suspect leads and we're looking into some stuff. we're also talking to witnesses also. >>> so that's a good thing and there were, in fact, witnesses and police say they have strong leads that they are pursuing in this case, but aga

george's police are hoping to make an arrest soon after a man was stabbed to death on a playground. >> the victim's body was found today in lanham right behind gaywood elementary school. news4's darcy spencer was there tonight with the details. darcy, what are you hearing? >> reporter: so far prince george's county police have cleared the scene. the body was found here in the playground area behind that elementary school. earlier this evening, a man who lives in the neighborhood came to the scene seeking answers. he says his disabled son is missing, and he is very concerned he could be the victim of this violent crime. the man was stabbed to death in the basketball court area behind gaywood elementary school in the lanham section of prince george's county. douglas reyes came to the scene concerned because he had not heard from his disabled son. concerned that he could have been hurt. >> some people might want to steal something, think that he has money or cell phone or something. he has a cell phone. he is not answering. >> reporter: police say there were witnesses to the stabbing, and they had strong leads in the investigation. they got the call around 4:00 in the afternoon and got here q
