glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the most accurate forecast. what is the timing of the storm? >> it looks like it is coming in slower which means the start time is later and the end time will be later. we continue to do it today, tonight and tomorrow. we have to keep up with us on that. we have first alert out for philadelphia, south jersey, jersey shore and also delaware now starting at 11:00 p.m. tonight to 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. the snow, blowing snow. we'll have 30 to 50 miles per hour gusts at the shore. a slippery morning commute and da dangerous cold will follow that storm. we are already seeing some of the clouds streaming up to the north related to the storm itself and the closer precipitation is off of the carolina coast. this is tremendous moisture and cold. that blue is heavy snow in parts of south carolina. you can see the strong jet stream offshore. this is definitely going to be a huge ocean storm. here is the futurecast hour by hour. the tighter these white lines are, closer together they are the more intense the storm is. it looks

meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has more on the timing of the rain in your most accurate forecast. >> the rain is dwoing to carry us right into the start of the weekend. >> we're going to get quite a number of hours of rain between tonight and saturday morning. some of it's going to be heavy. the ground is is already wet. we have more snow to melt. we have ice that can create ice jams. we have some potential problems here. that's why we have the first alert for this heavy rain and flooding for the whole area. we're going to start it at 4:00 a.m. on friday. it won't be the heaviest rain falling then. pu it's raining and it's raining friday. friday night and into saturday morning. so the first alert goes into noon saturday. heavy rain, possible thunderstorms, we have gusty winds. even without thunderstorms. and the run off from the frozen ground and the ice clogged drains. it's just a lot going on. there's a lot of mouseture starting to build. and the midwest and it's just a matter of time before it gets up here. it is much, much warmer than it has been. it's 57 in philadelphia. we

this is a live look at 9th street in south philadelphia. >> let's check in with glenn "hurricane" schwartz who is tracking where the icy mix has fallen. glenn? >> it's expanding not in the philadelphia area yet but it will be. it's dry to the north. the trend has continued through the afternoon. two hours ago, nothing. now the moisture is coming back towards maryland and harrisburg. that will make a right turn and head towards our area and this area will expand some more. we still have freezing rain over much of the city of philadelphia and the southern portion of delaware county and there is a line right across theç suburbs. and northern delaware, freezing rain, same with the southern portion of chester county and now we have a changeover between the freezing rain and just plain rain to dover. dover is warm enough so that the rain is not freezing on surfaces. tabernacle, waterford, in the freezing rain category right now. temperatures are right near 32 but because the ground has been so cold for such a long time it can be freezing on air temperatures. this is all north and west. anything

let's go over to glenn "hurricane" schwartz. we'll feel the cold when we wake up in the morning. >> absolutely. we have been unseasonably warm for a couple days. but that's it. 62 degrees both monday and tuesday. 's high only 44. that's still above normal for this time of the year. the normal is 40. then 38 on thursday. 44 on friday. that's about as cold as we're getting. close to average january temperatures. 54 right now in philadelphia. so we're dropping some. 46 in reading and lancaster. that temperature is going to be dropping pretty quickly during the night. this was the last of the downpours that came through right around noontime right on schedule as the heavier rain moved offshore. and now we have dried out. that's the end of precipitation for the week. but the temperature and that's a different story. it's going down pretty quickly by tomorrow morning we're in the 30s. and it's feeling like the 20s. especially in the suburbs and the lehigh valley. and we'll let you know how much colder it's going to get after that. and

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is back and we see it behind you there, glenn. there's a mixture, right?>> yeah. and the largest area of precipitation is the most dangerous. it's the pink area that is freezing rain. and, of course, this will get more difficult once the sun goes down and makes it even harder to see what's ahead but there is tremendous improvement here in the lehigh valley where the precipitation at least for now has ended farther towards the southeast towards the shore it hasn't even started yet. but in this area, in this zone, it's i-95 corridor, as we call it, and there's a lot of freezing rain falling and, again, this is side roads, bridges, overpasses, your sidewalks, your driveways. even your car windshield may be getting some icing while the main road ahead of you is okay because it's been treated. well, here in philadelphia, we are full of freezing rain. there's a little bit of a mixture up in abington and norristown. it's all freezing rain. farther to the north, the at moth fe moss fear is colder so you get more sleet. this white area is snow. and just on the nort

let's check in with meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. hey, glenn. we've got quite a different looking sky from yesterday, nice and blue through the but it sure has cooled down over the last couple of days. remember on tuesday we were 62 degrees. wednesday morning it felt like 39. that was quite a drop. and this morning at 7:00 a.m. felt like 18. just two days that kind of change. right now it's 33 despite that sunshine and still in the 20s in blue bell, perkasie, kotsdsville 28 degrees. poconos 28 degrees. still feels like 19 in pottstown, 23 in philadelphia, 20 degrees in reading. as we go through the day today, it's mostly just holding in the 30s with at least a little wind, the wind may diminish some later today. it's going to feel like it it's in the 20s again by 6:00 and the wind really dies down tonight. so there is no real difference between the actual air temperature and the feels-like temperature. but we're going to be seeing some real significant changes coming, warming and also some wet weather over the weekend. we'll get into those detai

first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking all those changes coming our way. >> it's in the 60s right now, glenn. what's the drop going to be? >> it's going to feel 40 degrees colder between midnight and 8:00 in the morning. just to give you an idea about this arctic blast, pittsburgh dropped 22 degrees in 45 minutes. just an hour or so ago. that's the arctic blast. rain tonight, the arctic blast and then snow next week. don't want to forget that. this is all rain, obviously, too warm for snow no matter where you are, even in the poconos. some of this is on the heavy side. starting up to the north in the lehigh valley down through much of bucks county, warrington, hatfield. philadelphia is over here about to get hit. everything's coming to the northeast. wilmington's rain is going into delaware county. further to the south, smyrna's rain is headed towards salem county. riv riverview's rain is going into the dover area. there's more to come. plenty down in southern virginia. lines of thunderstorms in western maryland. it's going to be a long, wet night. eventually

let's bring in meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. this snow moving in pretty soon now. >> yeah, you're going to get your dinner plans through fine, and then the morning, that's going to be a problem. we've got a first alert out for the entire area. now, we had a first alert out for this storm yesterday morning before there were any kind of watches or warnings or any kind of other alerting about this storm. we try to give you as much of a head's up as possible. that included philadelphia itself in the first alert. 9:00 p.m. tonight to 7:00 p.m. tomorrow, heavy snow, blowing snow, drifting snow. we don't normally get that. dangerous morning commute as a result of the combination of all those things. blizzard warning up and down the coast. so what's a blizzard? you need three straight hours of gusts or sustained winds of 35 miles an hour or more, and a visibility of a quarter mile or less. it doesn't seem that difficult, but it's a very rare combination. we didn't even have that in philadelphia in '96 in the blizzard of '96. that's what

talking about snow totals is my colleague and good friend, glenn "hurricane" schwartz.ou have those nailed down for all the neighborhoods, right, glenn? >> right, tammy. we are expecting, again, quite a difference between the amount of snow and the areas north and west and the areas at the shore. there's also going to be more wind at the shore. the snow will start earlier at the shore. it's going to end later at the jersey shore. the temperatures will be critical. areas north and west might end up with less snow, but you have your own problems because the temperature is so low that a lot of the chemicals won't work as well. so our computer model set up for the snow totals throughout the area ranging from about 4 inches far north and west to a little over 10 inches in cape may and also in southern delaware. the wind gusts will also be a major factor and especially southern delaware and also south jersey. you can see the difference in the wind gusts right at the shore, like avalon at 51 and egg harbor, not that far inland, at 34 m 34 miles an hour. there's a blizzard warn

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is helping you track it. glenn. >> it certainly is a different weather story than we saw yesterday, a lot warmer and tomorrow, a lot stormier. we had a fair amount of sunshine mixed in with clouds today. boy, did it get warm, 66 in dover, delaware, much cooler at the beaches because of that chilly ocean. they don't get to join the rest of the area in this mild weather. it will be another day of mild weather, a few hours in northeastern pennsylvania, the main action through ohio, not strong but widespread. our chance of getting some rain tomorrow is pretty close to 100%. not this evening, though, looking basically dry. by tomorrow morning's rush, lehigh valley, berks county, you're looking at potentially heavy rain and even thunderstorms. it will take a couple hours for even the leading edge of that to get to philadelphia, trenton, wilmington. these areas in yellow and red they're getting closer generally after the morning rush for most of our area getting hit between 9:00 and noon. as we go through the night t

nothing major, but kind of a nuisance. >> here's meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> it woulde a bigger nuisance if the ground was cold before this happened. we had some snow all day. there would be a lot of problems around. as it is, the snow is moving out. it's not moving out fast, but it is moving out. it's tapered off quite a bit in philadelphia and chester county, montgomery county. but it's still coming down in parts of south jersey and in delaware. as you can see, they are getting some heavier snow. you can see how much lighter it is in newark and western portions of delaware. a sign of things to come. drier air gradually moves in. not much in southern delaware right now or in cape may. the trend is just going to continue with the end of the snow coming in atlantic city. then it might take a couple hours for that. the temperature now bele freezing in most of the area, the snow is officially. stopped in philadelphia at 30 degrees right now. the visibility is better. the atmosphere is is trying out. we're in the upper 20s to near 30 across can much of the rest of the area

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with his most accurate forecast in town. keeps moving in. those flags show it. it's a northwest wind keeps trying to bring in colder and colder air. but at the same time, we're starting to see more sunshine, especially north and west of philadelphia. seeing more of the blue in the sky, it's a little bit brighter, and that trend is going to happen across the area this afternoon. as we look over the last few hours, you see the thicker clouds in delaware and south jersey, the breaks in the clouds to the north and west, and those breaks starting to move towards the philadelphia area. we're getting a little bit more of a brightening on that trend. again, we'll continue than trend. only about 44 this afternoon for the high temperature after a couple of days in the low 60s. the average high's 40, so this actually is a little above average for this time of the year, just feels so much colder than the last couple days. only 38 tomorrow and 44 on friday. right now we're seeing temperatures in the 40s in a good bit of the area, 42 in p

glenn hurricane schwartz is here with the most accurate forecast. >> we were pretty mild over the weekend. unseasonably mild. but things are changing cloudy skies now but cold ail is returning, light snow coming tomorrow but somewhat bigger threat on friday. still not a major storm of any sort. the rain from yesterday isn't that far away, right here cape may and another bounce just south of washington. some of that will move up towards parts of delaware and jersey shore this afternoon. this is the system has going to bring light snow to parts of the area. you can see it's not a large or intense system here. here's this afternoon. a lot of clouds around, he especially south and east of philadelphia. towards the beginning of the morning rush it is dry and temperatures are above freezing. this area of snow, according to some of the latest models, weakening as it comes through so we get very little temperatures above freezing. to we're not very concerned about significant travel problems tomorrow as a result of that. right now it's 43. in philadelphia, 39 in coatesville and bluebell. as we go

before we get to our next live shot in delaware, glenn dplen "hurricane" schwartz, i have been hearing you talk about blizzard conditions. >> yes. it has specific wind speeds and specific visibility for three hours or more. those conditions have been met at atlantic city international airport. therefore it is a blizzard in new jersey right now. that's what we are seeing, wind gusts over 35 miles per hour and the visibility a quarter mile or less. that is the case. the center of this thing is so obvious i don't even have to point it out to you. it takes one minute by one minute pictures. it almost looks like a hurricane. the radar does not go out into the ocean. that's why you see it out towards the land. i also wanted to give you an idea of the motion. it is going straight to the northeast. it is pretty far off the coast. the sceptereptember center is east of atlantic city. if it was half that philadelphia would be getting the 10 to 18 plus inches. the shore might be getting 2 feet or more. so the speed of the storm plus the distance from the shore is what is limited, believe it or now

let's bring in glenn "hurricane" schwartz with more of what we can expect in the way of rain tomorrow. >> parts of our area may be affected during the morning rush but not the majority of the area. everybody is going to be warm again tomorrow. unseasonable warmth. 53 in philadelphia now and in the 60s in philly all through delaware except for right near the beaches. take a look how things have changed. 53 on sunday, 62 today, 64 tomorrow. then plunging back near normal wednesday and thursday even below normal. that won't last long. this looks like a drive evening, the first system coming in during the day tomorrow. not a lot with it right now. it is organized but it's not as strong as it's going to be by the time it gets here. 2:00 in the morning still pretty much to the west. as the morning begins, lehigh valley, berks county getting into heavier rain that could slow down the rush. even by 6:00, it hasn't made much progress except for showers. and we talk about when the cold air starts to come in. >>> developing now at 6:00, your congressional district could be changing soon. pennsyl

let's bring in meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. everyone wants to know about the timing for our snow. how does it look? >> it's well after the rush tomorrow afternoon. don't worry about travel then. this is one of the places to get hit the hardest in cape may. we're going to be seeing some of that snow pile up there among other places south jersey, delaware, philly, all in the first alert for the snow. now not so much for the amounts of snow, but remember what happened on saturday. it doesn't take a lot of snow to mess up the roads when the roads are cold. even the well-traveled roads we had some problems. wednesday at 9:00 p.m. to thursday noon, that means the rush there's going to be a problem. and dangerous cold comes after that. and winds, we have wind gus of 50 miles per hour after that. this monster storm, a huge storm. and if you don't like snow, you are happy that it's tracking pretty far offshore because if it came straight up the coast, look at this snow in north carolina. even north georgia is is going to get snow from t

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here, with an update on your neighborhood forecast. >> this is a strangeentually everybody will be seeing snow, it's going to take a long time to spread through the area.a.m., to wednesday at noon for our first alert, greatest amount of snow when we add it all up is going to be lehigh valley, berks !xpoconos. some rush hours are going to be affected. the morning rush on tuesday, the only area impacted is the valley, berks county and the poconos. the only areas lehigh valley berks and the pa suburbs, chester, bucks montgomery county. philly is okay, both rush hours. new jersey, delaware okay. wednesday morning's rush hour, that's a different story. that w problems are going to occur. snow's getting a little closer on radar, can you see it in central pennsylvania building and moving to the east. typical storm, it's not a clipper, it's not a nor'easter, it's related to the jet stream, and the jet stream only shifts slowly, that's why this is moving slowly. we got above the freezing just barely from freezing south and east. and the temperatures have dropped in

glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us now with the most accurate forecast. >> this system is very different depending where you live. >> yes. it's mostly about the timing difference. it will start so much earlier in some parts of the area than others. the first alert is for accumulating snow for the entire area. parts of the area getting it as early tomorrow 6:00 a.m., and it may not see it start until noon on wednesday. that's very unusual. the heaviest snow falling in lehigh valley, berks county and see if the commute is possible with this. this is not a big storm. it doesn't really have the potential for that, with the ground being so cold it certainly has the potential to stick. it could start by 6:00 a.m. in burkes county, lehigh valley, poconos but not affected by tomorrow's rush. maybe tomorrow's afternoon rush is affected by chester and montgomery counties, from philadelphia southward even the afternoon rush tomorrow may be okay. it would be the wednesday morning rush that could be a problem. that's how slow this thing is. by tomorrow 8:00 a.m., the first flakes are reaching some of

glenn hurricane schwartz is tracking the system moving out and we've got stuff moving in, glenn. >> cold air, and that flag is an indication it's a west wind and there's bitter cold air in western pennsylvania. this is a good time to try to get rid of the snow on your sidewalks and driveways because everything's going freeze up by tonight as temperatures plunge. well, we have drier air coming in from the west along with the bitter cold. it's still snowing in good bit of south jersey, some parts of delaware. and even enough to be accumulating, but this is moving more and more away frore river populated areas. it's still coming down hard in southern virginia. thate straight up at us, but could graze southern delaware during the afternoon. the visibility tells us how heavy the snow is. we've got no issue when the visibility is allentown still having a little bit of snow. the philadelphia international airport visibility's shot up just in the last hour. so we're pretty much out of it. but mount holly still has some significant snow, so does melville, atlantic city. is not heavy snow in any o

let's check in with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> that roller coaster we've been on continues.t the bottom of it now. despite sunshine today, only 32 degrees. that's as high as we've gotten in other parts of the area, haven't even gotten to 30 degrees today. still a little bit of snow on the grass in the lehigh valley but not much. it's mostly gone. the temperatures have varied. in the 50s saturday and sunday. down to 38 yesterday. only 32 today. but we're going to jump up tomorrow. and then we're going to go right back down as we go into friday and saturday. in delaware, we have temperatures near the freezing mark. greenville, a cold spot at 30. 33 at glasgow. farther to the south, with that southwest wind, a little milder. reading at 36. millsboro, 36. only 32 at dewey beach. now the wind coming up from the south and the southwest, we've got to look to our west to see what air is coming. warmer r. 58 in nashville. 66 in little rock. even minneapolis isn't that cold today. so there isn't a whole lot of cold air over the country moment. we have dry conditions across the area no

nbc 10 first alert glenn "hurricane" schwartz has that game day forecast for us. glenn, looking good. >> quite a change from what we've seen over the last couple of games. and it's going to be pretty comfortable for the fans and pretty good conditions to play in too. 48 degrees at kickoff and not dropping a whole lot as we go through the game, 44 degrees by the fourth quarter. it's pretty mild for january and compared to the other games, remember the one december 31st, it was 17 degrees where the wind chill feels like of 2. last week's game 29 feels like 17. compare that to the game that we're going to be seeing this sunday. it's just a tremendous difference. and one of the differences is related to the wind. we hardly have any wind now and we're going to have hardly any wind as we go into sunday. less than 10 miles per hour. 39 degrees right now, so it is chilly and 31 in reading, 30 in perk cosee, 29 allentown. we're going to be seeing the temperature get up into the 40s. it feels like it's around 30 to 40 degrees, 42. and the temperature will be going up in the
