janine de la vega is live this morning along interstate 880 in fremont. t a truck in half janine. >> yeah it did. pretty incredible footage. very devastating. a female driver in one of the cars did not survive. three others are in the hospital. it happened all here on the southbound lanes of 880. you can see traffic is back to normal but all the lanes were shut down earlier this morning. the chp says at 12:30 a.m. a sedan got on to southbound 880 but it was heading the wrongway. it traveled northbound for three miles before crashing head on with a pickup truck around thornton avenue. the sedan burst into flames. the firefighters rushed to the scene to extinguish it and treat the victims. it was a mangled mess of twisted metal. the impact was so powerful that iter to the pickup truck apart. >> upon collision, the cab of the truck the quad cab. the quad cab of the truck it completely separated from the chias city and the bed of the truck. it landed probably 10-15 feet in front of the chias city. >> the female who was in the sedan traveling the wrong way died

janine de la vega is joining us live now. you're in menlo park. what is that warning janine? >> reporter: well, first off let me tell you cal train just passed by here. so the schedule is back to normal here. i do want to show you the repair crews that are here because again this was badly damaged in the accident late yesterday afternoon. cal train says the woman most likely had cars in front of her and she got stuck at the tracks here. cal train officials say oftentimes traffic gets back up at the location all across the railroad tracks and drivers stop on the tracks. they say this happened just before 5:00 p.m.. a southbound train coming from san mateo hit the woman's suv sending it 40 feet through the intersection. the suv was totaled and the woman was rushed to sanford hospital. she died of her injuries. >> our heart goes out to the family, of course. this is a tragedy. we just want to remind people, don't stop on the tracks. people have to understand that it's not safe to do that. even with all the safety devices we have in place. and don't go across the tracks until you

janine de la vega is joining us live from sunnyvale with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: police have cleared the scene here at wolf road and elle camino but they are keeping their eyes open for a white mercedes sedan. they made it stop at el camino at wolf when an officer exited his vehicle and approached the mercedes the suspect sped toward the officer and that is when the officer made the decision to fire his weapon. >> during the attempt to stop the vehicle, the vehicle drove toward the officer at a high rate of speed. officer fearing for his life fired several shots at the vehicle. the vehicle was last seen northbound on wolf road. the officer was not injured. >> the other officer in a marked patrol vehicle chased the mercedes on wolf road in the northbound direction but lost the vehicle. sunnyvale department of public safety is heading up this investigation. they are unsure how many were in the mercedes and working to see if they can provide us with a license plate number. it's unknown if anybody in that suspect vehicle was injured. the detectives are also looking t

ktvu fox 2 news reporter janine de la vega is near the house. you just talked to one of the man's loved ones. what did she say? >> reporter: well, yeah, we just spoke with her. she lives in this corner home. she says the man that police shot also used to live in this home. she is upset. she said she begged police not to shoot this man who is engaged to her daughter. now, let's go to a picture of him. she identified him as 23-year- old phillip watkins. he grew up in gilroy. police say at 5:00 yesterday afternoon, they received a 911 call from someone inside the home on the 1300 block of sherman street. who told them that a man carrying a knife had entered the home. the caller also said that the person needing help was locked inside an upstairs bedroom. officers arrived at the scene and found watkins outside of the home armed with a knife. they say they ordered him to drop his weapon but instead he charged at them. that's when the officers opened fire. watkins was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. here is what we were told by his
