we want to head over to meteorologist, kari hall with a look at what's going on with the cold morningt. >> it is a cold morning, but a nice afternoon for taking down those decorations. i like to start the new year fresh. that means everything in the box for the new year. temperatures in the upper 30s at 38 degrees if you head out right now in napa. 47 in oakland and 42 in palo alto. after this cool start, a beautiful day. look at the high temperatures, 60s and 70s for the south bay and mid-60s for the east bay. 62 in palo alto. 59 on the embarcadero and 62 in the north bay. let's head over to mike. the headline is not really a surprise today. >> maybe it shouldn't be the headline. the bay bridge toll plaza, no metering lights, the same all week. a smooth flow of traffic and about as many cars as you have seen all week. this is a special edition of the map from christmas to new year's, a lot of folks extend their holiday. that is what we are seeing. the north bay, no fog. that's shifted over, above my head in brentwood, bay area. a nice drive on either side of the bay throughout the so

kari hall has tracking it all. old man winter not sparing us this morning. >> no. not even in san jose. with the cold temperatures, it's illegal to burn wood today. it's a spare the air day. air quality will be unhealthy. moderate for the east bay peninsula and the south bay. it may get worse as the weekend goes along with the things we are putting out there and the atmosphere gets trapped in the lower levels. as we go through the next couple hours, still have this freeze warning in effect for the areas shaded in purple and along the immediate coastline, frost advisories in effect. there could be patchy road ice. you have to watch out for that and slow your speed. dress in layers heading out the door, wear a hat. bring those pets inside. i have been watching my tomato plants and hoping they survive. those are some of the things we have to watch as we go into next couple hours. the coldest time will be the next couple hours. i'll keep an eye on those temperatures. i'll have another update in seven minutes. vianey has been keeping an eye on the roadways. any issues y

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the cooler weather. >> we've had the fog roll in this morning and it's covering much of the san francisco area and also it was really deep, some of that fog rolling into parts of the north bay valleys. well, as we take a live look gentlewoman side from san bruno mountain above the clouds, we are seeing it settling over the city. it will take a little while longer for it to clear while inland areas are seeing nothing but sunshine. as we go into the next couple of hours, that sun will start to warm things up and also help mix out some of that fog as well. right now we're at 54 degrees in san jose, 51 degrees in livermore and 5 in fairfield. santa rosa started out this morning with the fog and freezing temperatures and struggling to warm up right now. it's still really cool out there. the visibility down still to about one mile. and san francisco and clear visibility is about ten miles. so as we go through the day, the mostly sunny skies inland will make those temperatures into the low 60s. upper 50s for san francisco and half moon bay. so the othe

meteorologist kari hall, you've been tracking these conditions. are we going to be able to deal with this all day? >> we're going to have gusty winds all day long. watching that as our winds pick up and seeing the waves also along the coast a little bit higher today as we take a live look outside in ocean beach. it's only 57 degrees. not only the gusty winds, king tides happening as we speak. we reach high tide shortly after 10:00 this morning and also see those tides coming up once again. we call it king tides because we have a very high astronomical tide because of that supermoon and it's going to create some higher waves out there and the possibility of localized flooding. winds also customing coming in from the northeast and high surf along with the high winds. we'll talk about that coming up in just a few minutes. >> thank you very much, kari. >>> hundreds of parents and students in san jose are worried about what might happen to their neighborhood schools. several schools in the oak groves school district face possible closure on consolidati

meteorologist, kari hall says it will get better today. >> yeah, a lot more sunshine. we start with clouds and fog this morning in parts of the bay area. once all that clears out and this cool start will warm up. take a look at the temperatures now. we are starting out with another cool morning, 35 in livermore, 45 in san francisco. parts of the north bay, freezing but will make it to the low 60s today. warmer than yesterday and a lot more sun. we will get a look at what's ahead in the forecast. unfortunately, it stays dry. i'll talk about that. mike, what is happening out there? you have a hazard off highway 4? >> a note for folks around high way 4. most of the bay, these speed sensors are what you want to see. green around the bay. highway 4, west of 680. we have a disabled vehicle, but chp made it over the center divide. this is really what we want. the travel time, no delays, 14 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge. you are at speeds with no back up. good stuff. back to you. >> all right, mike, thanks. >>> new this morning, a deadly accident involving a pedestr

a better look at what's going on in the sierra, we are going to turn to meteorologist, kari hall. >> we will get light snow, it's not a major storm system. that's what's going to happen for the bay area. light rain moving through mostly overnight. so, we will still have a dry day and temperatures above normal, reaching the mid-60s for san jose, 57 in oakland and 58 degrees in san francisco. north bay going to see those clouds rolling in early with that rain as early as tonight. most of us, though, not seeing that rain until early tomorrow morning. we will talk about the timing. another look at the forecast is coming up at 6:09. mike has two new crashes to report. >> that's right, kari. we'll stay with the maps. we have a smooth flow of traffic starting to build. we have a crash in the east bay. southbound 880, approaching 92, the slowing is blocked. traffic is starting to back up with the build out of hayward. a traditional pattern. a lighter flow around the bay. that is unusual that formed in the last few. no slowing on the sensors here. the second crash we are talking about, southb

meteorologist kari hall is tracking a breezy morning across the bay. kari, we going to have to hold on to the wheel as we cross those bridges? >> i think so. it is windy out there. not only that, but it's cold. look at these temperatures with the widespread from morgan hill where it's 39 degrees. san jose, feels milder. then look at san francisco. 53 degrees. you can tell already, we have a wide range in temperatures. not only that, gusty winds, with advisories in effect for the areas shaded in brown. today, the winds could peek up to 55 miles per hour, especially in the north bay and east bay hills. we may have downed trees. there may be power into this evening. winds continue to gust in from the north and we will see that through tomorrow morning as well. so, a look at the temperature for today and what else is in store for the week. that's coming up in a few minutes. >>> 5:03 right now. new this morning, oak larnd police are investigating a deadly hit and run crash. it happened at 2:00 this morning. so far, police are providing a few details. we do k

and kari hall has been tracking the weather conditions that we've been facing, and kari, it's going to be colder tomorrow. >> here we are about two and a -alf hours into winter, and we are talking about really cold air for tonight. and then here we are looking live in downtown san jose, some people starting to get out there to enjoy christmas in the park and maybe now is your opportunity to beat the crowds. as we look at our current temperature, it's 54 degrees, it's breezy and feels cooler than that actual temperature. we're heading into the upper 50s today. the big headline will be the freeze warning in effect for tonight for all of these areas shaded in purple, this is where temperatures will be below 32 degrees. and this will be in effect not only tonight, but friday night as well. so be prepared for the possibility of some icy roads and damage plants. make plans to bring the pets inside and take care of outdoor animals. we will talk about some of those numbers, how cold it gets where you live, that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. we we'll look forward to it, thanks

let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. but first, a beautiful look. >> live look there at san francisco. very clear. and right now kari, you know, this is what we are all happy about, a clear, nice, beautiful day. >> right. it seems like it's been awhile since we've had some sunshine. in fact, it's been since friday since we've had an all-clear day. as we get another view of san francisco from instant park, our temperatures are starting to feel a little milder, too. as we get a look at this view from mt. hamilton, we've seen a very deep layer of pollution and haze being trapped here in the south bay. now it is not looking at hazy so that's also showing some improvement as far as our air quality. looking live from sunol, also some sunshine and we don't have as much of that smoke being trapped in the valley. so as we go through the day, our temperatures gradually warming up. we are now in the low to mid-50s as we go into the afternoon, expect our highs today up to 63 degrees. that's above normal and also warmer than it was ye

that's why we want to bring in kari hall. the winds are up to 70 miles per hour. >> right, those santa ana winds are strong, coming over the mountains, funneling through the valleys, fanning those flames coming from the northeast up to 70 miles an hour. sustained winds 40 miles per hour. this could cause a lot more fires to spread as we continue to monitor that situation. it's been very dry. this is a look at the drought monitor and those areas highlighted in yellow, abnormally dry. where we see the tan color, that's where they are in a moderate drought. southern california, much drier than the conditions we had here in the bay area. we have been taken out of that draught status, as we look closer at the bay area, not seeing that. look at the wind speed forecast throughout the day. it's going to be very strong. this shows the hour-by-hour forecast taking us through late morning, coming in from the northeast. possibly carrying more embers as well. it's possible that we could see more wildfires as we go throughout the rest of t

we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall, something we have not seen before or many of us have seen before that, purple warning. >> it's the first time and it's issued by the santa anna wildfire threat index agency, they are the ones who issue the red flag warnings and things like that, tracking the critical flag warnings -- critical fire warnings, but we are looking now at the drought monitor. this will be updated today. so we will see if we will have that amount of drought in southern california increase to a different level, but we are also looking at some very dry conditions as of now. strong winds, here is a look at the sustained wind forecast throughout the day blowing those winds offshore. we know that as it kind of funnels throughout the valleys as well over those wildfires it could create some quickly spreading wildfire conditions. so looking at very low humidity and this will continue throughout today with near hurricane force winds. we're monitoring all of this as the day depose along. >>> and our team coverage continues as well. i want to bring in "today in the bay's" gi
