ktvu fox 2 alex savidge is there in berkeley.o just learned that some or all of the victims in this case were young irish citizens. i want to show you a statement from ireland's foreign affairs minister. it reads my heart goes out to the families and loved ones of the deceased and those that have been injured in this appalling accident. the 911 calls started coming in just after 12:30 this morning. police got here and found the balcony on the fourth floor came down toppling. alto fall of five people were killed in this collapse and eight others were hurt. some of the people that were hurt have life threatening injuries. berkeley place are still searching through evidence. and maybe the most surprising part about all of this is that this is not an old structure. this building was built just about ten years ago. it has residential units, a number of them up above and it has retail down below encolluding a cafe. very popular here with many of the college students that live close by. at this point other people living in this building

ktvu fox 2's tara moriarty is there at the scene. the police for the past several hours have sealed off a home. it's a very tense situation, tara. >>reporter: yes. sources tell ktvu that someone entered the home and fired several rounds, killing one of two brothers. we are here at the home which is off of saint maritz drive and meadowbrook circle, and you can see that they have crime scene tape up and the csi van is parked in the driveway. we know that investigators are inside the home gathering evidence and police i am told are looking at whether drugs or gangs were involved. the 911 call came in just before 1:00 this morning. according to a family member someone came into the house and shot both of the brothers, one in the leg, and he is now at the hospital. the other man, not sure where he was shot on the body, but he was killed. family members were too distraught to talk to us on camera. we know that a dog was out here trying to pick up a scent for the suspect, but at this point police are remaining tight- lipped about whom they a
