i am laura garcia. >> i am scott mcgrew. marcus washington is taking some time on. we have live team coverage. >> mike inouye is tracking your commute, and bob redell is tracking the roads out in the bay. >> this is a lighter storm, the one that moved in late overnight and it's impacting our morning commute. notice the rainfall is a little more scattered and a little more widespread in through parts of the interior. down through the south bay on 101 and morgan hill, santa cruz, but no heavier pockets. we are not in the clear just yet. even though the system will bring over all 0.01 much an inch to one quarter of an inch in the bay area, the next system that moves in friday into saturday is expected to bring heavy rain at times and a potential for an additional three to five inches. i know that it's new year's eve, and the good news, though, it does look like even though we will see the system push through, there could be a time when it clears out just in time for those midnight celebrations to welcome in the new year. we will watch out for that localized flooding. f

"today in the bay's" thom jensen live for us in the north bay where things are going on right now, but first we want to go to vianey arana who is monitoring the storm that continues to come in. >>> we are in the thick of it now. as you watch us at home, i don't want to drive in the storm and avoid the storm, hold off. the biggest difference heading into the afternoon, the atmospheric river you could see the plume taking direct aim right at the bay area will continue to make its trek out. we're seeing light to moderate rain, heavy pockets, you can see the heavier areas moving in through hayward, dublin, down through fremont. if i zoom this out closer to san jose, you can see a stronger cell moving in as well into the downtown area. santa cruz really expects to keep that pouring until about 8:00, 9:00, and then even at 9:30 to 10:00 we'll see that scattered shower activ

i am laura garcia. >> i am marcus washington. get to the team coverage with our climate in crisis. kari hall just got the update. how is it looking for us? >> still in the drought. we have been in a drought for 20 years, and it's expanding across the west and the drought does continue, and with the update i just got 15 minutes ago we are seeing slight improvement for the exceptional drought that has been ongoing in the central valley. as we get a closer look, we can see how much of the dark red you can see further to the south of the bay area as we get a look of the update this morning, notice how it shrunk about 1%. there was minor improvement. we will see our extreme drought for parts of the north bay as well as the severe drought that is happening further off towards the north and across much of the rest of the bay area. so we once again are in this drought. what is the update you have got,

i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. and are we getting a break from the rain? >> here and there, but it has been for some definitely on. and we're still seeing as much of the north bay right now as we're still tracking some of the heavier downpours moving through especially marin county across the bay, but elsewhere it is very spotty. you may encounter some showers on your way to work, but we'll see it taper on. a lot of the showers have been moving through with the center of the storm rotating just off the coastline and we'll see some waves of rain continue. maybe another round of heavy rain headed toward the south county within the next few minutes. but then we can see the activity becoming very hit or miss into the afternoon, maybe a lot more sunshine, but look at san jose at 4:30, still a chance that pop-up shourp may move through while everyone else is enjoying sunshine. so we'll talk about the next storm system as well coming . >>> and we're looking at some damp roadways. and in the east bay slowing through la fay

i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington is going to take some time off.rning the rain has moved out but yesterday's winter storm caused a lot of issues across the bay area. a roof at the big 5 store in san ramon collapsed. trees collapsing in the burn scar from the czu complex fire and there will be more issues moving forward this week. >> that's because more rain is headed our way. tracking it all has been meteorologist vianey arana. you have a look at some of the totals of rain. >>> although it was pretty quick moving, it dumped a lot of rain especially for the mountain areas. and the concern when it dumps a lot of rain on mountains is the potential for run-off, debris flow, and of course the burn scars. right now when you look at the map notice 6 inches in mt. tam. that's where we saw some of the highest totals. anywhere from about an inch to 2 inches, concord a little over an inch, napa and san jose where you probably noticed it was more south bay focused nearly an inch and a half. our current is 145% of the average. this is not taking into account th

i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has some time off. we'll start with the forecast. meteorologist vianey arana is in for kari this week. when does the rain come back? >>> our little break from the rain is right now into tonight. the rain does make its way back in tonight, but the storm is going to be a little different compared to yesterday's. i also want to point out that our temperatures are currently running a few degrees colder compared to yesterday. we woke up with mostly 40s, low 50s. we have a couple 30s on the map now in napa. 38 degrees. livermore, 39. behind that system we're seeing the colder temperatures and we are expecting to see, of course, some of the early morning fog. we'll see some clearing of the fog and moving ahead expect to see the temperatures warm up into the 50s. then we'll start to see more above average temperatures for this time of year. low visibility down into livermore and look at morgan hill, down to less than a mile visibility. the weekend ahead, it's new year's eve. mike? >>> vianey, we're looking at,
