senate, you lieutenant governor, mandela barnes.dropped out and endorsed him. the next challenge will be the november race, the face up against incumbent, senator ron johnson who's expected to win the republican nomination. joining me now, john nichols, official affairs correspondent for the nation. welcome, john. wisconsin, famously a swing state. president biden won in 2020. trump won the state in 2016. you expected to be a close race? >> it will be a close race. wisconsin has close races. of the last six presidential elections four of them were decided in wisconsin by under 25,000 votes. the last governor raced was decided by under 25,000. it's the nature of the state that this will be a close race. it will also be one that is just flooded with money because it is such a pivotal race for control of the senate. >> this is a really interesting matchup, mandela is often referred to as a progressive candidate. compare that to conservative, ron johnson, who can recently suggested ending medicare and social security as mandatory spendi

i do want to start with wisconsin and mandela barnes and ron johnson. a slew of ridiculous statements and he's a trump acolyte. barnes is very bright, very smart, a young candidate. he lieutenant governor with governor experience. this will be a very interesting race to watch. what are you hearing? >> thank you so much for having me, tiffany. mandela is a client. candidates like mandela barnes represent the diversity and the -- and the enthusiasm in the party and frankly is overperforming joe biden and generic democrats in wisconsin, a candidate with executive experience as lieutenant governor and with legislative experience. they are really demonstrating that millenials need diverse voices in the senate. millenials now the biggest voting block in america representing only 30% of the u.s. senate and so i think mandela -- candidates like mandela are really demonstrating what can happen when we put forth a diverse -- a robust and diverse slate of candidates. >> yeah. well, we're watching, and, dean, terrance made really good points there are wisconsin and

in wisconsin, mandela barnes, the democrat there, leads incumbent republican senator ron johnson by 4ercentage points new england registered voters and president biden is 2 points up on former president trump in favorability. arizona voters favor incumbent democrat mark kelly by 8 point over challenger blake masters. and they like the former president over the current president in arizona. it's long been said a picture is worth a thousand words. tonight in the senate race a video seems to be worth a half million dollars. democrat john fetterman says his campaign has raised that much in just 24 hours after release of images that prove mehmet oz is out of touch with average voters. he pushes back. correspondent bryan llenas shows us tonight. >> grocery shopping at wagners. >> that's republican pennsylvania senate candidate dr. mehmet oz walking through a grocery store in april. complaining about the inflationary costs of vegetables. >> here is some asparagus. that's $4. that he was $20. this doesn't include the tequila. it's now a viral video thanks to merciless campaign john fetterman.

the poll has democrat mandela barnes up over ron johnson wisconsin. i know it's early.lot. still some time. are you concerned, jas, about the state of the senate races for the gop? >> no. look, both sides of the aisle are concerned. the balance of power is gonna come down to a few races and potentially just a few thousand votes here or there. i think when voters focus on the issues, on what's the reality of the inflation reduction act and there isn't inflation reduction in there. it's the green new deal disguised as something else. people will be irate. they'll vote for what's going on with inflation, energy, immigration, crime in their cities. the democrats, i don't think, have an answer to all of that. they can spend $1.5 billion to put trees in urban areas in the latest bill but that a't gonna solve the american people's problems. >> juan, we also saw one poll this week showing democratic congress woman val tkeplings up over marco rubio in florida. what do you make of that? is it true? is it an outliar? your thoughts? >> >> i got to think it's an outliar at this poin

so mandela barnes is in pole position right now. i want to ask you about the gap between polling and reality in effect or at least results. joe biden has been in the cellar when it comes to his approval rating, beginning one year ago this month with the invasion -- with the withdrawal from afghanistan, independent voters abandoned him at that point. he's never gotten his moejo bac. 36% approval rating. inflation is very high. unemployment relatively low. but a huge number of bipartisan accomplishments have been passed in this term under this president's leadership with democrats in congress, 50/50, republicans, mitch mcconnell deserves credit for making many of those things s bipartisan as well. how do you account for that gap between biden's low approval rating and the fact that things are actually getting done in washington, which is something we're not accustomed to always? >> yeah, but, here's where i take issue with that, john. >> sure. >> it seems to me that bills are being passed, but people don't live on the front page of "t

and mandela barnes is a more progressive candidate.ing to be tgher for him in a general election but ron johnson was always unpopular. so potentially could that be a democratic pickup? >> i could be. it is going to be difficult, but, you know, there are three factors that might drive democratic turnout in wisconsin. and you're absolutely right, he needs big votes out of madison. he needs big votes out of milwaukee. number one is donald trump, if donald trump announces for the midterms that's all democrats need to do to rile up their base number two, i think you wl see -- the overtuing of roe v. wade is just a big wildcard in wisconsin because the governor's race becomes a binary choice, we either will been abortion or remain legal. there's no doubt about who will control the legiature. those two things, i think, are significant, as well as, of course, ron johnson continuing to say bizarre things like medicare and social security should be made discretionary spending. so it's going to be a very, very close election here. once again, you

they will send people to congress that will fix that which is why you see mandela barnes and gabby gifford. it's fluid. mike: senate minority leader mitch mcconnell sounding a little bit concerned. we don't have it so now i'm teasing it too. [laughter] mike: he's basically saying he's concerned about candidate quality in terms of winning back the senate majority. thinks perhaps that some of the nominees may not be able to win in november. matthew, finish off the point on that. >> well, let's go back to arizona, mike. the number 1 issue for voters in arizona is the border. we just e clipped the mark of 2 million people entering our country illegally. we are on track for this year for 2.3. that's an addition to the 1.7 that enter our country illegally last year with a million known got aways, that's 5 million people. that is what number one in the minds of arizona voters. so i think senator kelly will have a lot of problems. mike: all right, so the wild card in all of this is how does this mar-a-lago raid/document controversy play out in november? >> we will see what gets redacted from the f

in wisconsin, mandela barnes is up over ron johnson.isconsin has always -- was always going to be a competitive race. but i think democrats thought they would be at more of a disadvantage at this point in the cycle. >> there's one factor we have not talked about on this show yet, the roe v. wade decision, that's factoring into a number of races you are seeing in this poll, and how it is playing out. i think it has energized democrats in a different way. i think it has made people look at what senate contests mean, senators approve of supreme court justices. and so i think it has become another tool for people to run on. look, candidates and campaigns matter. as particularly in pennsylvania, you have seen dr. oz stumble repeatedly. he has made what we used to call gaps in the pre-trump era, we don't say that world really anymore. but it does revoke a george h.w. bush supermarket scanner moment. it's stuff that's been surprising to watch. trump, i should point out, while he's complaining about mcconnell, mcconnell is putting a lot of mone

in another pivotal senate race ron johnson from wisconsin trails mandela barnes by four points.tistic call dead heat. also an enthusiasm gap that could boost johnson's chances. 66% of his voters are excited to vote compared to 57% those backing barnes. what do you make it the about the enthusiastic factor. is it real and play a part in the mid-terms? >> six years ago when ron johnson was on special report last night and pointed out that in the last election ron johnson was behind in the polls by 3 points right an election day and won by 3 1/2. the polls have gotten a lot of stuff wrong. what we have to go on and it is troubling. if you look at the 538 average of some of these key averages. dr. oz is losing by 11 points in pennsylvania. in arizona masters losing by 10. in georgia herschel walker is losing by three. in ohio vance is losing by 1.2. a tie. rob portman won that seat six years ago by 20 points. joe biden is the least popular president in the history of presidential polling. we have the worst inflation in 40 years. the highest gas prices on record. the worst crime wave

, and maya, i want to point out that ron johnson is in a very tight race in wisconsin against mandela barnesre. what's baffling to me about this entire thing is that 75 million people voted for this man. present day millions of people across this country remained blindfoldly loyal whose first job in government was president of the united states in a job he failed miserably i would say. we have reporting from "the wall street journal" that garland was mull this over. i wonder from your brilliant expertise as an attorney, how much of that should garland have looked through the legal lens, and should he have even considered the political fallout or political consequence? and i don't mean elections. i mean the violence that we're seeing play out since this all happened. >> you know, well, i think the truth is that merrick garland is doing what he said he was going to do which is following the evidence methodically and making sure he's making a decision first about the evidence, so i don't think there's any question that he's been doing that. i think the issue of the violence is one that we have

you see on the screen there, mandela barnes who republicans thought would be easy prey to beat. put all this together and mcconnell is probably having negative flashbacks of 2010 and 2012 when they nominated extreme candidates and threw away their shot at gaining a senate majority in both those years. the caveat in all of this, it is august. the trend line between now and november of an election year typically moves against the party in power. republicans need only one net gain in the senate. mcconnell staring down that republicans could blow it again, katy. >> you've been studying this. talk to me about what is at play here. >> well, first, and i think sahil summarized it very well but if the election were held today, we'll play that game for a moment, democrats would almost certainly hold the senate and probably add a seat or two. that's burning mitch mcconnell. because if the candidates he wanted to be selected in certain states like georgia and arizona and several others had been picked, i suspect we'd be talking about how large the republican majority would be, though it wo
