i'm joined by senior political editor mark murray. paul is a freshman senator with a well-known father former congressman ron paul. how much of a serious contender is rand paul? where does he rank? >> he's going to be the most interesting guy in the republican field. he takes positions that usually your normal republican wouldn't take. he's a little less hawkish on foreign affairs, less interventionist when it comes to foreign policy. had he wants criminal justice reform. he sounds like his father did in his presidential runs in 2008 and 2012. >> he and his father don't see eye to eye on everything. what is it going to take for rand paul to win over his own party? not everyone is on board with his ideas. >> the biggest challenge is on foreign affairs. the republican party and the age of isis and the iran talks is much more hawkish when rand paul came to the senate. for him u to succeed, he's going to have to hope the issues look like they did in 2011 and '12 when you're talking about the debt and economy, things more in line with libe

joining me live now nbc political editor mark murray. let me talk about what we just received here.ad one of the state lawmakers on earlier in indiana who indicated that the fix was fine. they want business in indiana, but it was not enough. now angie's list is the first of that big power group of businesses who have now come out and said that the fix is not enough. >> yeah, tamron two big points here. one, it's very hard to find a compromise on this issue when you have conservatives and social conservatives in one place and big business on the other and being able to make both sides very happy, and so i think that statement from angie's list on saying look the fix does not fix things enough is very telling. the other big takeaway is just how big of a player corporate america has been in this debate and, of course, we've seen walmart and the issues that they have been able to do going on in arkansas, particularly with governor hutchinson saying we need to be able to fix our legislation as well. but corporate america has been perhaps the biggest mover and shaker in all of this to a v

joining knee nbc's senior political editor mark murray. votes to override the president's threatened veto. >> it looks like the bipartisan legislation ended up getting even more support. my colleague frank thorp is reporting on capitol hill there should seem to be a deal that now has been reached with republicans like senator foreign relations chairman bob corker along with democratic colleagues. some of the language has been changed regarding iran and terrorism, as well as on the review process. and the thinking is that that's actually going to create a majority that will be veto proof. this all tamron plays at some of the tensions that are going on. congress wants to be able to have a say so in this iran deal while the administration is saying please don't do anything that's going to jeopardize this deal from being finalized in june. that's the tensions that are playing. it will be interesting to see if the white house is okay with some of these changes that were made with democratic help. >> let's talk about john kerry being on capitol

mark murray and nbc capitol hill correspondent kelly o'donnell. en delving into this as well as kelly. what do you see as the new hillary clinton approach? how different is this going to be? the last time she did start online she went out to early states but this is going to be a different kind of hillary campaign. >> i think one of the biggest differences we're going to see is an attitude on not taking anything for granted at all. andrea, you look back at one of the biggest fundamental mistakes, they wanted to ignore the caucus contest and said it's really where the primaries matter and didn't realize there were a lot of delegates you could cap by winning caucus contests and then able to rack up tons of delegates and ended up having more on super tuesday because he paid more attention to the caucus contest. the vibe you're getting from clinton world, they want to take everything seriously. they are not going to let their guard down. have the perception that they are taking something for granted. >> and mark what about marco rubio, planning to anno

. >> i want to bring in nbc's senior political editor, mark murray. so, mark, when you look at the way she's approaching it, just based on this two-minute video at the moment, is that the part of america that she will be struggling with when it comes to voting day, though? is that the group that she needs? >> look, i think the votes, the voters that she actually needs, it's too early to kind of tell from a video. what did strike me was just the level of diversity, and in a lot of ways, this is the obama coalition, when you actually talking about younger americans, african-americans, lesbian and gay americans. that is what really struck me in the videos. is that the folks who are previewed are the democratic coalition that she needs to be able to win in a general election. and so, you know, we're going to end up having over the next 19 months or so, what i can say, richard, is that when it comes to winning over the democratic voters and democratic primary voters, every poll shows that she starts with just a huge, humongous lead. and in fact, you would h

we're joined by nbc news political editor mark murray. good to see you. talk with us about why this state means a lot to the clintons. >> new hampshire has been the comeback state for both bill and hillary clinton. bill clinton earned the moniker the comeback kid after he finished second in the new hampshire primary in 19292. if he hadn't finished there, he wouldn't have b president. barack obama won iowa everyone thought he would win new hampshire, the polls all showed it and hillary clinton in a very big surprise ended up winning new hampshire which then pushed that democratic nomination contest into overtime on the way through june. obama barely won but hillary clinton a big important state for her. >> talk about the republicans who were in that state this weekend and marco rubio being the one that came out on top? >> well all these republicans were there. all of them had a lot of red meat a lot pointed at hillary clinton, president barack obama, but this is one of the many many cattle calls we're seeing. these republicans will meet with voters test ou

joining me from washington mark murray. it is good to see you. rand paul and marco rubio expected to announce this month on the gop side a week or so apart. and on the democratic side you can just put her face anywhere. she will announce sometime this month. and just make it official. but let's start with rubio. how big of a contender is rubio? >> i think he has a lot of upside in this. it is important to take the early polls with a grain of salt but in the baseline could you see yourself supporting this person but he ranked among the top along with the governor of wisconsin, scott walker. and even though rubyio isn't in the conversation, but if walker falters or a jeb bush stumbles where republicans can get on board because for the most part he is with them on the issues and he could bring diversity and the biggest questioning going forward is can he raise the money. he is competing in the same donor base as jeb bush for a lot of the big floridian donors and is florida big enough for both of them. >> he checks off youthful diverse and star facto

joining me to breakdown the numbers, senior political editor mark murray.do poll a majority of adults approving those actions? >> it wasn't terribly surprising, other times it polled, it showed it was getting majority support. one thing worth noting jose while this is a controversial political topic, seeing tremendous back and forth between democrats and republicans on this issue, the way the question was worded when it says the people that would qualify under this are people with no criminal record who are parents, who lived in the country at least five years, when you put those important qualifications on the question you'll see more people be supportive rather than the normal back and forth when it becomes in the prism of whether you like president obama or not as you get in political questions. >> looking to immigration reform pathway to citizenship, priority for all adults a large majority of latinos, i was surprised, mark by the fact that a lot of people said they would support immigration reform even if it included legalization and not a pathway to c

as we await hillary clinton's announcement, let's bring in nbc's senior political editor mark murray some polls and what they might mean for her upcoming campaign. a welcome to you, mark on this exciting day. this latest nbc "wall street journal" poll shows 44% of people have a positive view of her. but is it clinton fatigue or do you think something else is driving that number? you'd like it to be higher at this point. >> yeah we have seen an erosion in hillary clinton's poll numbers, but i'd actually attribute that more to her leaving her post as secretary of state, which is an apolitical post. usually a lot more republicans, people of the opposition are giving you a thumbs up than when you become a political candidate. ever since she's put her eyes on the presidency, her numbers have started to come down as republicans and democrats get into their collective corners. but what is worth noting in that same nbc "wall street journal" poll, her favorable opinion, 44%, 36% unfavorable, was really the second best set of numbers below her husband bill clinton in our poll. that measures pr

joining me live now, mark murray. good to see you on this thursday.>> good morning, tamron. >> let's talk about this bipartisan bill and where things stand now. >> it looks like this legislation is all about assured. it doesn't change components and trajectory of president obama to get a deal with iran. the biggest thing for congress wanting to pass this deal is to have some type of say to be able to give a thumbs up or down but what is crucial here is that president obama can have a veto and so for congress to override it in both houses in the senate and in the house of representatives, you're going to need 67 votes in the senate and 290 votes in the house that means sizable numbers of democrats and the thinking is and anything can change but thinking is right now that will be a high hurdle for republicans and critics of any iran deal to overcome. >> again, when you look back at some of the very strong rhetoric including that infamous letter that was sent by some members of congress here you wonder what was happening and gamesmanship that played out

mark murray nbc senior political editor. good morning. >> good morning. >> so the gloves are off. senator rubio told npr he's done more on immigration than hillary clinton ever did. what does it say he's going after clinton. >> not only on immigration, but marco rubio's big speech all yesterday talking about the need for new generation was definitely a shot at hillary clinton and by extension a slot at jeb bush. on immigration, jose, specifically, marco rubio is right. he was one of the co-authors of the gang of eight immigration reform legislation. hillary clinton and her defenders would argue, however, when the senate debated and passed legislation on immigration reform back in 2006 she was one of the yes votes for that and they did agrees where she believes comprehensive immigration reform now marco rubio's position is now all about saying you need to fortify the border first, then talk about citizenship and legal status later. >> talk about the entrance of rubio for people like bush or paul. marco rubio, he has the ability, has tremendous amount of upside jose, in the contest.

with me from washington nbc senior political editor mark murray and msnbc political correspondent casey his campaign or expected to launch his campaign in louisville in kentucky where of course his political career kicked off when he was elected to the senate in 2010. and after that he's going to embark on a tour of the early states. he'll head first, actually to new hampshire where his father came in second in the 2012 presidential election. then he'll go onto south carolina where he'll speak about foreign policy on the u.s.s. yorktown. that's an interesting place for him right now from a policy perspective considering what's going on with iran and isis. he's in a place that's a little different from the rest of the republican field and could be problematic in the long run. he'll conclude his tour in iowa with a rally at iowa state. i think you can expect to see a lot of the enthusiasm there that drove his father's presidential campaign in 2012. >> and, mark let's talk about the numbers when it comes to senator paul's poll numbers our latest nbc news/"the wall street journal" poll foun
