this has happened four times in two days. >> megan mcgrath is driving around the neighborhood in fairfax on how the burglars are pulling off the crime. megan? >> reporter: well, yeah. a common denominator here. all of the homes targeted, they all have garages. talking about neighborhoods like this. this is fair oaks. one of the neighborhoods hit now. the burglar goes into the neighborhood, he looks for cars that are unlocked. he then takes the garage door opener and that's how he gains access to the house. take a look at the map here. here are some of the areas that have been hit this week. valley oaks drive, hunt manor court. abington hall place and edge mere circle. it's happened four times in one week. now, it's the overnight hours. early in the morning, 2:00, 3:00 in the morning, the garage allows easy access and three of the incidents, the homeowners have heard noises, they went in to investigate and they actually found a man inside their home. that man ran away, but he did get away in some cases with wallets and purses. one of the incidents, the homeowner heard something, went to i

megan mcgrath is live with how this composite was created and what it could mean for future cases megan. >> reporter: well, it's very high tech. dna analysis is being used to create very detailed composite sketches of suspects. here in montgomery county, technology for the very first time in an active case. here is where the rape happened. take a look at the map here. a woman was dragged from a bus stop near watkins mill road and travis lane back on october 6th in the early morning. now, take a look. this is the composite sketch of the suspect that police say is responsible for that crime. now, a company called snapshot used dna collected from the crime scene and using a technique called photo typing, they predicted the physical characteristics of the suspect. things like ancestry, eye and hair color, skin color and face shape. they were able to come up with this very detailed sketch here. take a very close look. this is the person they believe is responsible for this rape. they're hoping that someone will recognize this man and give investigators the break that they need. back to you g

megan mcgrath is live at police headquarters with more information on these shootings. megan? >> reporter: guys, nobody wants to hear the sound of gunfire in their neighborhood. but it happened several times last night in several areas across the district. there were four shootings in just a matter of four hours. a total of five people were shot and one of the victims, a woman, died of those injuries. the fatal shooting happened just before 7:00 last night on just street in northeast washington. a neighbor reports here about 20 or so gunshots in the alley behind an apartment building on that street. the woman was found dead on the doorstep of her building. we've learned that the woman had just moved to the neighborhood after getting a new job. now, the four shootings happened in, again, a not all grouped together here. no word on any arrests. police are looking for witnesses and information in all four cases. back to you. >> all right, megan mcgrath for us at d.c. police headquarters. thank you. >> we're following breaking news out of baltimore. a homicide detective clinging t

. >> news 4's megan mcgrath is live in silver spring along columbia pike. megan, what happened? >> reporter: well, a deadly hit and run here. police are trying to figure out exactly what did happen and how many drivers are involved. so they need some witnesses to come forward and help them piece it together. this happened on busy columbia pike. what you see behind me, you look at the map. it was around hillwood drive in si a lot of traffic in the area. police believe that the woman was trying to cross the street and she may have been hit by more than one car. the driver of a minivan did stay on the scene and is cooperating with police. investigators believe that there may have been another vehicle involved that did not stop. so they are looking for witnesses to come forward to figure all that of out. it was about 6:30 last night. it was dark. the woman was apparently trying to cross the street when she was struck and killed. this time of the year of course, it gets dark earlier. pedestrians have to be very, very careful. police say the drivers need do their part too. >> drivers,
