. >> pete suratos whipple and rai avenues with more on what happened. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. we're standing at railroad avenue and whipple road as you mentioned. still a very active scene here. this is where the suspects at least tried to get away before they were taken into custody by police. you've got union city police behind me. we're showing you some scene video from when you have police on scene in an area trying to look for suspects where they got away. according to union city police it happened roughly around 11:30 p.m. officers stopped a car near e street and railroad avenue and that's where a gunfire exchange takes place between several officers and the suspects in that car. i want to point out none of the officers were injured during the gunfire exchange. at that point one of the suspects drives the car to the area where we're standing at railroad avenue an the suspects jump out of the car and run into the surrounding neighborhood and all of them were eventually located by officers and taken into custody. one of t

pete suratos joins us. this is a dark reminder of the fires in the clearlake area. >> reporter: yeah, that's right there's a history in the lake county area. a number of fires just in the past five years. in fact i spoke to a volunteer here to talked to us us a little bit about the history. as folks try to battle and firefighters on the ground battling this fire out in lake county, there are a number of agencies coming out from the bay area. we want to show video from alameda county. firefighters tweeted out video of crews leaving for lake county. their strike teams heading out to the area. you have firefighters from fremont and hayward and oakland and also crews from san jose and santa clara helping out with this fire. the fire did break out on saturday just northeast of where we're standing in clearlake. it's already reaching several thousand acres as you mentioned, threatening hundreds of buildings, we see folks in the parking lot, sleeping in cars and kind of waiting to get any information they can on w

. >> pete suratos live on "today in the bay." pete, what will the supreme court do with this case. >> good morning. today the supreme court will decide if they want to hear that case. specifically a ruling by a lower court when it comes to use of excessive force by that sheriff's deputy. let's go ahead and back up and give viewers a time line of all that's taken place in the last years. it happened back in october of 2013. you had sheriff's deputy shooting and killing lopez in 2013 as he was walking in an unincorporated part of santa rosa carrying a pellet gun the sheriff's deputy thought looked like an ak-47. at the time they decided not to file charges against the deputy. but the family filed civil rights lawsuit against the county and deputy claiming he violated what they said was a constitutional ban on unreasonable search and seizure by using excessive force. he said at the time he believed the weapon was an assault rifle and lopez was raising it towards him and his partner saying he was legally shielded from being sued becau

pete suratos joining us live with what you shouldn't be alarmed if you hear the shots. pete? >> reporter: yeah. good morning to you, marcus and laura. part of the shots spotter testing taking place on different freeways along contra costa county and might be related to the testing and not disclosing the locations and making folks aware of it. what is it? it's been around for quite sometime and seeing it around different cities in the bay area. basically sensors set up there at least in the station set up along the freeway to detect where gunshots are being fired. from there, an alert is sent out to officers who can then respond to this specific location. chp reports there are over 100 east bay freeway shootings between 2015 to 2017 along contra costa county freeways, highway 4 as well as interstate 80 where we are standing here. chp did beef up the patrols and installed cameras along highway 4 and no information if it led to arrests related to freeway shootings and basically the shot spotter technology is another tool. testing will begin on the freeways starting 9:00 p.m. and

nbc bay area pete suratos has the stunning turn of developments this morning. pete, talking about a number, they're really given us a loose number here. >> reporter: yeah, marcus. pretty loose number at this point. i was on the conference call with investors and they announced this potential $2.5 billion in losses due to the wildfires and pointed out it's a low-end estimate so that number could obviously change so let's get into exactly how they came up with the numbers. accounting for potential liability in 14 of the 16 fires in the north bay. now, they're basing this off of investigations and the determinations made by cal fire. in those fires talking about the sonoma and napa merged fires in that cluster. now, absent from that list are the tubbs and atlas fires and pg&e claim they're not accounting for financial losses from the fires at this time. they're saying it's not probable to see losses so specifically stating on the call the cause for the tubbs fire is yet to be determined and when it comes to that it's too complex for a good estimate from it. now, th

pete suratos on "today in the bay" to explain what happened. morning, pete. >> good morning, kris. rightfully so, residents of contra costa county are concerned about allegations that possible radioactive materials may have been dumped in a landfill just north of where we're standing in concourt. this comes after allegations last month that data from tetratech was falsified in the cleanup at radioactive soil at hunters naval shipyard in san francisco. potentially radioactive materials may have been dumped in keller canyon landfill in contra costa county. our investigative unit reported on this just a couple weeks ago. they are saying the navy retesting hunter naval shipyard. they are beginning with parcel g, showing you a map, shoes you 40 acre land that will turn into parks and homes in the area. they are going to retest that. also the city of san francisco plans to test parcel a, you see that on the map as well, where people are already living in condos. as for capitol cost residents weighing in on their issue, there's going to be a town hall

pete suratos is live in oakland and what have you found out about the case? >> reporter: good morning. this is a land-lord-tennant dispute and the tenant is kidnapping the landlord and then starting the car chase and they are in the car and that is where the chase ended in east oakland. we'll show you the video we have -- we have video from our chopper to show you guys of this chase that took place earlier this morning. but according to oakland police, the dispute began at the 600 block of oak street on the west side of town. now that tenant who is described saz a man in his 30s assaulted a family member of the 70-year-old landlord and then kidnapped her. he put her in the car and officers were already en route to the scene after he assaulted that family member. they tried to stop that suspect in the car but the suspect kept driving away and then that is when the pursuit continues to the east side of oakland where we are standing near suitor and lorenzo. we're being told by police that the suspect surrender without incident but the 70-year-old was rescued by

"today in the bay" pete suratos live with questions lingering about the cleanup of the shipyard. te. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. really this comes to providing clarity for contra costa residents. if indeed these allegations are true then radioactive materials may have been dumped in a landfill in contra costa county north of where we're standing in concord. these allegations that i'm talking about came out last month. data by the pasadena-based firm tetratech say they falsified cleanup data at the 100 point naval shipyard in san francisco. potentially radioactive materials were dumped in a contra costa county landfill, folks there may be familiar with that. they did report on the issue. they are reporting the navy is now retesting the 100 point naval shipyard following allegations against tetratech. i believe we're showing you a map, 40 acre swamp that will eventually turn bo offices, parks and homes in the area. also the city of san francisco plans to test parcel a, you see that on the map as well, where people are already living in condos. they are testing pott areas
