and roku did withdrawal its full-year outlook. roku is suffering from what you might call a perfect storm of an ad recession hurting its ad business, pullback in consumer spending and supply chain constraints, and there's the fact that growth in this category was pulled forward into the pandemic writing roku is locked in what they call a three-sided war battling amazon, alphabet and other tv manufacturers for connected tv market share, fighting nearly every streaming platform for audience impressions and now facing off against the likes of netflix, disney, amazon, youtube. the list goes on and on and on for streaming tv ad dollars. now, here's the part that could bode poorly for the other ad-supported companies that have yet to report. that includes warner brothers, discovery and paramount. they both report next week disney comes the following week. the company said that despite record up-front ad sales, they see a dramatically weakening ad market in the so-called scatter market those are the more last-minute ad sales we're watchi

julia, a slowdown in ads a theme again for roku. >> yes that's a main factor cited by roku ceo explaining the fact to miss earn and revenue estimates for the quarter but guided to lower results and couldn't sustain any outlook for the second half of the year and seeing a broad based advertising pullback indicating that across sectors they see advertisers take a pause one thing that's interesting is advertisers to commit a lot in the up front ad period and now when they have the opportunity to not do any spending in the last minute or scatter market they say we'll take a pause until we have insight on the consumer. >> this is so reminiscent of the discussion of snapchat we heard from meta and google, what's the takeaway? >> i think it's more nuances than roku states you are in tough times trying to optimize the costs including marketing. efrlg close to the consumer is actually going to be left alone rkt possibly increased and farthest are cut google paid search is last step and potentially an often first step leading to purchase brand advertising is furthest from the consumer so most cut t

that roku is facing. it is a macro issue. but roku is having the bigger brunt of it and having an outside impact because, one, they have -- they face supply chain issue, two, they have a greater skew to scatter market which a large majority of the ad dollars are derived from scatter market which is very soft. three, they don't have a strong exposure to perhaps travel for example and auto and cpg are still weak not from fogoogle they have travel exposure. and there is impact of the costs as well so there is a whole host of issues impacting the top and bottom line that roku is seeing an impact from these right now. >> so they're going to reduce operating expenses, head count, right and growth, content spending how does a company like this, that is going through that, do that without hurting future growth prospects >> well that is a great question i mean, they are slowing down their operating expenses but if we keep it in context, it is still very elevated they're spending -- we are estimating them to spend almost $2 billion in
