joining me is southwest airlines pilots association vice president, captain michael santoro.s very much for being here this morning. >> no problem. thanks for having me. maria: can you explain to us what's going on this morning, why are all flights within the united states grounded? >> sure. the system the faa uses to inform pilots of different things going on at at particur airports. the system into the airport the in the cloud, it informs us what things are working and not working on that particular airport and in the vicinity of it. so it's a pretty important safety tool we use to know what's going on and they're real-time so we get updates before we take off and a then as we approach airports we check on them again at each airport which is why most airlines have decided to halt operations out of you abundance of caution. maria: on a very basic level, the faa systems outage means that pilots cannot access their flight plans. we know that the technology at the faa is already a antiquated, captain, but do we have any idea whether or not this is human error or could this have

reporter: i see what you did there, ash, there's no love lost between some passengers and southwest airlines. namely one passenger in new orleans who has filed the first lawsuit against southwest. it's a proposed class action and the lawsuit claims that this gentleman's flight out of new orleans was canceled. he says the airline couldn't book him on an alternative flight and offered only a flight crcredit. there's no dollar amount he's requesting in the suit but wants a full refund and reimbursement for costs associated with the cancellation. for its part, southwest is trying to make good for its loyal customers. ceo bob jordan once again apologizing this week and offering frequent flier points equivalent to about $300 to affected passengers and we asked southwest about the lawsuit. it's not responding directly to it, but it tells us we have a long and proud 51-year history of delivering on our customer's expectatiations and we're commid to the all important imperative of taking care of them during operational disruptions. this lawsuit could be the first of many to come. i spoke with attorne

southwest? could this do it for them? >> i don't know. airlines are like utilities. when we need them. for folks to fly in those southwest hubs, we southwest airlines because the cheapest option in the most convenient. it's very hard to switch our alliance when best on that works for you. we'll see. we always come out of the airlines around these times. guess what? we always end up booking travel with them in the future and we need to. we'll see whether there could be some harsh regulation release of punishment coming for the d.o.t. to southwest. it wasn't the only l.a. that had problems during the holiday season. this is a problem we have this integral traveling and infrastructure that's just not ready for it. that's a warning sign for the entire air travel industry. >> is there something that southwest can do to rebuild trust? >> giving money away in giving trouble coupons, that always seems to get travelers back using airline again. they're probably gonna mount a big trust campaign going into 2023 because you don't lose customers especially when folks will be pull
