parts of the east bay. we're seeing some of the heaviest rain around clear lake. we're looking at spotty showers toward solano county, as well as contra costa county. some of the spotty rain moving through. this is all part of a bigger weather system that's quickly moving through the bay area and that's going to bring in showers. the golden gate bridge, you can see the mist coming down. mike, you've been watching an alert early this morning. >> and it's going on still. here is the bay bridge toll plaza, sloppy conditions, and that may potentially have been one factor. this crash happened on the san francisco side of the bridge from treasure island. it's around the big tower there as you come into san francisco and it extends back with a backup to treasure island and it looks like folks are exiting and perhaps trying to go to the san mateo bridge. the wet weather is playing a factor on your traction and visibility. pictures on twitter, you see the rain on the lens, you see chp and fire crews as well blocking

we'll see when it moves into the rest bay area coming up. >> a live look at the bay brimming.e the shot yesterday because of so much fog. you see the clouds there and terry showed you. so far the commute is shaping up pretty nicely. we'll check out the business world next with bertha. >> i'm bombs from cnbc. the dow is fractionally higher. it's been going between losses and gains all morning after stocks rallied yesterday recovering most of tuesday's losses. the fed remains committed to fighting inflation by raising interest rates despite the uncertainty in ukraine. powell is signaling that the fed will likely raise rates by a quarter percent later this month and the market likes that kind of specific guidance. oil prize meantime continue to surge to levels not seen since 2008 on fears of supply disruption from the war in ukraine. global buyers for the most part have been shunning russian oil even as deeply discounted prices from that country n.focus today and what's really going to set the tone, we've got a lot of economic data, the weekly unemployment firing and productivity

up as wu approach the bay bridge. i'm also seeing several big issues getting through the east bay into walnut creek. on 680 southbound we had a car on the roof. there is now a backup that's getting a lot longer, taking you a much longer time to get on 680. now we have a new incident on 880 going southbound near whipple road around hayward and union city. you're seeing the backup there with the red arrows and so it's going to take you a while to get through that stretch. elsewhere it is looking pretty good, but we're starting to see more cars getting out on the road from the south county into the south bay. our drive times are looking orange for 238 from 580 to 880. it takes you about four minutes, but we're seeing about 27 minutes from 880 and 238 to 84. we are seeing more people getting out. a little bit of a slower drive. so it's time to grab the coffee and go. i'll have another look at weather and traffic in a few minutes. >> thanks, kari. >>> speaking of traffic, as you head out the door, a warning for those speed

north bay on san pablo bay up into solano county. showers will continue to venture further and further south east sharing with us that moisture that the north bay is already really tapped into been relatively quiet, comparatively, at least for the south bay roadways are wet, though, from some misty conditions. light showers already. we've been seeing those light showers throughout the morning for the core of the bay area. this is just more widespread and a little bit heavier intensity, rain that's being picked up on radar, moving right across the richmond center fell bridge right now. golden gate bridge as well as on to the bay bridge, too up 80 as well as one. 0, one. these routes are really slick, really wet this morning. all across the bay. the recommendation is leave a little early because traffic's going to be going slower as it should on a slick morning like this. this cold front is pushing through with an increase in winds. also with a cool down in temperatures. so the next several days, kind of mostly be out of the 70's down

in the south bay. emerging now in the attempted murder case against former ucsf star cain velasquez. now prosecutors accused him of trying to kill harry who was charged with molesting a child who is related to alaska's and then released from jail last week a few days later, police say velasquez down to a daycare where he worked got into a car chase with him and then shot at him. but police say velasquez ended up shooting one of the large these relatives instead. during yesterday's court appearance, dozens of people showed up wearing shirts in support of kane. they read free. came. >> what can do that? don't i can't blame him and that can see it's right. and i think the men got what he deserves. the people's intention. >> that he remain in custody, given that we believe that he is still a threat to the victim as well as to public safe. >> last will remain in jail over the weekend. he plans to deny the charges. his attorney says he'll ask a judge to grant bail on monday. >> it's a 37 in the north bay. po

and south bay. smooth flow of traffic but it's been picking up a little bit. there was a huge dip in the first year of the pandemic, which was 2020 and the results we just got that were released from the 2021 aaa survey, 60% of participants reported they drove less. we all drove less, or almost all of us. a small 4% of people actually drove more. and the folks at aaa tell us the voluntary results, the answers that came in, the small group who was on the road more took the biggest risk with behaviors they admitted like texting while driving and excessive speeding. >> it's just a stressful time in general. if you're traveling on the road and somebody is driving aggressively around you, let them go, let them pass. just keep a level head and get yourself out of that situation. drive within the posted speed limit, always be a focused driver, and only drive when you're sober. >> so there you go. data from the national highway traffic safety administration showed 2020 was the deadliest year on the roads. t

in the east bay, california. lawmakers are giving uc berkeley the green light to remove an enrollment cap. governor gavin newsom signed a measure that allows more than 5,000 underclassman on to campus next year. the action in sacramento comes after a lawsuit over environmental concerns. kron four's jonathan mccall has that story for us. >> governor gavin newsome has now signed off on a bill passed unanimously in the california legislature on monday. that bill would have meant parts of the california environmental quality act and would allow nearly 2600 extra undergrad students on the campus of uc berkeley in the fall. the move would push the total number of new students on campus to more than 5,000 to 5,000. students shouldn't have to pay the price for misguided nimbyism. >> and that's what this lawsuit was about. those are kids who have many of them spent their life trying to get into this university with the best universities, universities in the world. phil bokovoy and his group save berkeley's neighborhoods s

in the east bay. oakland, police are investigating a case of a vehicle theft that ended with the thief debt. here's video from the citizen app of the scene. you can see the flames and the smoke shooting out of that white van. that van was stolen. it was reported stolen wednesday morning. and police responded in i avenue near el monte avenue and that's where they found the person in the stolen vehicle tried to speak to that person. but they drove off until the van ended up catching fire. and apparently the thief was unable to get out, died at the scene. in fact, 2 officers who attempted to rescue them suffered burns. >> we'll take a break at 9.37. becoming up a co-founder of a yoga studio in berkeley loses her job. tell you why. >> and we are still seeing showers moving across the bay area this morning. in fact, a line of heavy rainfall just moved from oakland on up a little bit further northward on its way up towards the cartoon as bridge. you're seeing some heavier rainfall around martinez right now.

we have fog in the north bay. but as far as visibility on your drive to work, it is clear around the bay area. take a look at the tri-valley. heading through dublin and 580, it's looking pretty good there. temperatures in the upper 40s. you can probably just leave the sunglasses at home because we're only looking at peeks of sunshine today. when you compare our high temperatures to what's normal for the end of march, well, we're right on target for many spots, or even just slightly below normal, but we are going to have a warm-up as we go into the next several days. we'll be talking about that in a few minutes. vianey, what's going on out there? >> part of being a commuter means you're paying attention to gas prices. we're taking a closer look at the increase. the prices have been looking at $5.85, in san francisco almost $6, and in oakland, a little under -- oh, man, all of these are almost $6. this is according to aaa. the latest numbers reveal that gas is still very, very expensive. so if you do have a commute

make it in the bay. in fact, $400 could soon go back into your pocket. that's what governor newsom is planning for californian drivers to ease the pain at the pump when it comes to the high gas prices. now this all comes in the form of a relief package that would cost the state $11 billion. each driver will get a $400 debit card for each car, up to two cars. even people who drive electric cars will get one. >> anything will help at this point because the $10 and $20 here that used to take us a lot further takes me like a mile down the street. >> governor newsom will meet with the state legislature in the coming days. this is to negotiate the proposal f.approved, drivers would get that debit card in july. there's relief for those who don't own a car as well. the package includes $750 million so all public transit could be free for three months. >> our team is moving you forward as mask-wearing for students at public schools across the state is now optional. it's, of course, depending on the school distric

the north bay, eventually spreading farther across the bay area. that will take awhile. switch over to future cast and it shows the best chance of rain staying north of golden gate. a few spotty showers here and there ahead of the main batch of rain. those will be few and far between. so, that is parked and in place, heaviest rainfall amounts will be over the north bay during the duration of this. the main area of rain gets nudged, the sun comes up on tuesday. so, wet roads for the morning commute, planning ahead for that. scattered light shower activity. just a little bit of moisture on the roads could slow things down. showers will progress to the east and should be out of here midday on tuesday. we will see a mix of clouds and sunshine for the rest of the day. total amounts out of this, meager. most of us, talking about more than a trace, north of the golden gate, 1/10th of an inch of rainfall, again. we will definitely take it. especially with another chance of rain as we get into the weekend. the best chances are going to be tonight into tomorrow morning, tomorrow a
