emma wright is checking out the roads. >> reporter: we're out here like they put some brine down on the roads. we are on 70 right now. it's looking good. we're not seeing any ice. there's no need to be alarmed if you're out driving around this morning but we did see some lines of brine out there. it looks like they did pretreat these roads because it is so cold and we may get a little rain a little later in the week. also area shelters waving their white flag and opening their doors. last night they launched operation rescue again. this means the shelter is open to anyone who needs a warm place to go. they'll feed you and give you some warm clothes so no one is out in the cold. people get some warm clothes and soup. as for these roads we're seeing there's definitely some brine on them but we're not seeing any icy conditions just yet. >> all right. >>> right now a state trooper and another driver recovering after a crash on i-40 in durham county. crews shut down the westbound lanes to clean the scene up. the trooper stopped to help two drivers that were in a separate crash and attracter

wncn's emma wright has been checking out all the damage from this morning and joins us now live in the mobile news tracker. how things looking right now? >> what a difference a couple of hours makes. we're on 440 right now and things looking pretty good. we're going to show you what this looked like a few hours ago. this is is video from 7:00 this morning, raleigh police say they responded to 33 accidents in the city between midnight and 9:00 this morning. we're going to show you some video of a couple of those accidents. this is one wreck, it happened on 440 near the wake forest road exit, it blocked up traffic for a while. they had to block the right-hand lane while they moved the cars over to the side of the road and cleaned up that wreck. another wreck happened on pool road. this one involved multiple cars. again, that also tied up traffic this morning. three cars involved. had to block the right-hand lane while they moved them off to the side of the road. drivers had to wait for a while 440 was a mess earlier. in addition to those wrecks blocking up the roads they also had to deal

emma wright is riding around this morning. how's it looking out there? >> we are in wilson county right now one of the counties on a two hour delay. roads looking pretty good. we've been driving all over the place this morning. we were just in edgecombe county. the most water on the roads. things looking pretty dry here when you're getting ready to send the kids to school this morning keep this in mind edgecombe county be schools operating on a three-hour delay this morning. johnston county schools on a two hour delay wayne county also on a two hour delay. we also want to pass along if you -- wayne middle outright today. the school says there's some kind of issue with the power. the school is without electricity and won't be able to get it turned on in time for school this morning. so things looking pretty dry out here. all of the districts operating on delays because of some icy weather they saw yesterday. we haven't seen much ice yet, but that doesn't mean that there isn't ice in some other places so you want to keep >>> wncn has new information this m

. >> emma wright is driving around our viewing area again. what are you seeing now? >> the good news is it's not snowing, it's raining pretty hard right now. we're on 540 right now in the area of airport and it is downpouring. we're also seeing some fog, we're not did see a good amount on 40 just a few minutes ago. the wind is really picking it up. you know if the wind is blowing us around if you drive a smaller lighter car it's really going to be moving you back and forth on the road. in terms of the actual road conditions we're not seeing any black ice, anything left over from yesterday's storm. most of that seems to have been melted by the rain and the warm temperatures. it's actually 30 degrees warmer right now than it was when we were out here at this time yesterday. however, you want to keep in mind we were seeing some disabled cars, some fender-benders still parked on the sides of the road. so you want to look out for that when you're driving around especially when the fog rolls in it can cause some visibility issues. that's what it looks like out here on 540.

. >> we're going to check in with emma wright. she's in wake county. have been riding around taking a look at conditions. how they right now? >> things starting to look slick. we're seeing some sleet and freezing rain. it seems to be changing on and off here a little bit of snow on the roads along u.s. 1 right now headed from raleigh to wake forest. wake forest seems to have more of the snow. you take a look at the road it's kind of hard to see in the dark, but there is definitely some white stuff on it. it's a little slick in places. we've seen a lot of dot trucks out here putting down some salt and sand and brine and it seems to be helping because you can see the difference where they have put it down and where they haven't. it's much cleaner in the areas that they have treated so far. the roads it's hard to tell how slick they are really at this point because there seems to be a little bit of just rain that comes down and melts things for a little bit but then you'll drive a little bit further and things will be frozen again. headed out this morning

that brought all that heavy rain and strong winds yesterday also spawned tornados, our very own emma wright joins us near oxford in granville county. we understand that that that area is one of the hardest hit yesterday. what are you seeing this morning? >> yeah, it really was. i mean there is just devastation for at least half a mile here. we are on huntburrough road. and when the national weather services comes out here to investigation these some of the things they're going to be looking at. see the trees, the tops of them sheered off, the ones that are missing powerful storm cloud came all the way through here. these trees go for hundreds of feet and also this, take a look at some of these limbs we're a couple hundred feet from where the top of the tree originated from. that gives you an idea of how powerful that storm was earlier today not only did it knock down the trees it took out the tops of a house. i mean, look at this, the roof of this house is missing. we're told the man that lives here just happened to escape the danger because he took a trip to wal-mart just before the storm

up north of raleigh and we're going to check in with them one more time >> in fact, our very own emma wright has been out there tracking the crashes all morning long. where are you and what are you seeing now emma? >> well, we're at i-40 west right now in the cary area. the area where there was about, you know, we saw ten cars off the road within a quarter mile stretch of ear other. traffic just started moving again albeit very slowly. take a look at the white, snow and ice on top of it. even with all of this traffic moving the traffic is not melting the ice and snow that we're seeing on the roads i-40 west obviously a very busy stretch of road in this area. so you know just how slick it is. we tried to step outside of the car a few minutes ago along the side of the road we were slipping and siding. you could barely stand up. traffic seems to be flowing pretty well here on i-40. most people seem to be taking it slow heeding those warnings that we've been telling people to give yourself some space in between yourself and the car in front of you and give those dot trucks some room. we're seein

emma wright checking out the roads this morning where they are prepared for potentially icy conditions there. emma. >> well, we are out here because it looks like the dot is trying to get ahead that have winter weather. we are on 40 right now. in the dark but the white lines on the road that is the brian that they put down, that is a salt solution that they put on the road in hopes that it doesn't stick and makes the removal a lit bit easier later on. earlier we were on 70 in clayton had lots of brine on the road. 40 still looking good. it is cold but we haven't seen any ice luckily. it doesn't mean there's not any out there but because it is so cold today some area shelters trying to get ahead of that really winter weather we're expecting. last night operation rescue was launched and it means the shelter is open to men and women who don't have a warm place to go. they say anyone who comes to the shelter will get a warm meal, a place to sleep and warm clothes. as for these roads, they've been brined we didn't roads just the main roads it looks like they've gotten to right now. back to

emma wright join us from the justice center. >> investigators say they found the ingredients to make meth in a house where the four were staying but even worse there was an 18-month old girl living there as well. >> the wade county sheriffs office says neighbors tipped then off after they saw too many cars coming and going from this house in apex. >> sheriff deputies said that night that there was something suspicious going on. >> deputies say their as you say pictures were correct. they found ingredients to make meth inside. even though the lab wasn't active an 18-month old says that makes it a serious crime. >> it's bad enough for the adults to use the drugs number one, but to put that child in the danger that making meth does is just amazing to me. i don't understand it. >> the sheriffs office arrested a 32-year old, a 30-year old, a 23-year old, and 28-year old. all expected to appear in court later today. as for that 18-month old baby the sheriffs office says she and another woman were taken to the hospital to be checked out. >> thanks for that update. appreciate that. >>> still

emma wright is riding around in our mobile news tracker. what are you seeing out there, emma? >> well we're seeing these heavy showers really kind of pop up. we've been driving around for a couple of hours and the rain will taper off and then it will really pour in buckets. we're on six forks road right now. things are were a little dicey the closer you got to the airport and the rain is still coming down for so long we've been seeing the water ponding on the roads. we've seen the cars in front of us and on the side of us hit some puddles. it is a possibility if you're driving to fast and come up on some standing water. we're also seeing an issue with the wind. it's really blowing the car around even on a road here like six forks where you're generally not going very fast you can still feel the wind blow the car back and forth. we're in a jeep which is a pretty heavy car. so if we're getting blown around i can only manual how folks in the smaller are lighter cars feel. so if you're headed out and about this morning you want to you take it slow, you want to give yourself some e

emma wright covering the store for us. emma. >> the four arrest warrants and they say they were making and selling meth out of that home. in addition to finding meth and ingredients to make meth they say the four were also in possession of three different kinds of drugs, they say this was all happening while a toddler was in the home as well. the sheriffs office says a neighbor tipped them off to the activity after they saw cars leaving their home at all hours of the night. according to the arrest warrants the four were making and selling meth out of the house in apex. inside deputies say they found needles, scales, pipes and ingredients which is used to make meth. 32-year old kevin williams was more facing several felony charges. the four expected to appear here in court at 2:00 this afternoon. we will be there of course, and will bring you updates on wncn.com. as for that 18-month old baby the sheriffs office says she was taken to the hospital to be checked out. >>> we have learned that craig hicks has a new court date. h

emma wright joins us with more. >> it took about a month for both sides to agree on 12 jurors that are willing to consider the death penalty. opening arguments start in just a few hours. nearly three years after she was found murdered in her apartment the man accused of killing jones will be before a jury. police say 23-year old smith murdered the mom of who in her own bed. police say jones had recently moved to raleigh with her daughter from tennessee. on the morning of may 14th, 2013, police say the apartment approached a construction crew, they followed her back and found jones's body laying in bed covered with blood. neighbors told us what happened was shocking. >> it was really surprising. i mean -- you don't hear about crime so close to home. >> police say smith had help from two people. one pleaded guilty to first degree murder in 2015 and may testify against smith. redden is also charged in the case and prosecutors say she served as the get away driver. she has not been offered a plea deal and is also expected to testify. the trial starts this morning at 9:30. >>> thanks for wa
