>> reporter: hallie, a couple things. first, i have not spoken to a member of congress who is not going to attend tomorrow. this is one of the hottest tickets in touchblt they're anxious to hear what he has to say. and also to show a level of respect that all of these members of congress who have such respect for president zelenskyy. he is going to speak about the no-fly zone, about the russian planes he also wants. he's made these requests over and over again. now, most members of congress are on the same page about a no-fly zone. they say it's not likely. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell said he doesn't support it. but on the issue of the polish planes, most members of congress think the u.s. should hand them over. here is a sampling of lawmakers that we caught up with earlier to i dachlt we'll talk on the other side. >> i don't understand why we're not providing all of the above. >> figure out some way, some nuance where we can protect the airspace. >> no one wants to trigger world war iii, and it is important th

>> well, hallie, it is increasingly more dire. i spoke with the deputy prime minister of ukraine who said of course she was not surprised that the leaders in mariupol refused that deadline, 5:00 a.m. this morning, it came and went. the russians have demanded their surrender. but he says that russia is escalating this war by its use of hypersonic missiles. she also told me, hallie, that more leaders than had previously been reported, 14 of them actually, including mayors and other leaders of small towns, have been kidnapped or abducted by russians since this war began. she says the situation in mariupol is dire. we've been speaking with residents and refugees that have struggled to get out of there, including one woman, olga, who we spoke with earlier today. she asked us not to use her last name because she still fears for her life. she's still in southeastern ukraine although she was barely able to escape from mariupol with her husband and child. she was able to get out of there on? a humanitarian corridor, although she did not re

hallie? >> courtney, let me turn to you. in about seven or eight minutes we'll hear from the pentagon press secretary. a big question, what's going to happen with the u.s. providing ally ness europe, backing them up with planes, or helping ukraine with additional fire power itself? >> reporter: this idea gaining increased momentum on capitol hill is the idea that poland would supply migs, fighter jets, to ukraine and the united states would backfill with some u.s.-made jets, most likely f-16s. it's true according to a defense official, that, yes, this is something the biden administration is considering. it's something they're working through and if the united states would be able to provide the fighter jets and how quickly. no decision has been made at this point. the defense official also pointed out if poland wants to provide thes migs to ukraine, the united states wouldn't stand in the way of that. the big question is here what can the u.s. do and how quickly? what we do know is that russ

usually, hallie, wars end in two ways. either one side wins or there's a stalemate on the battlefield. right now we don't have either of those conditions, and i fear, therefore, the war is going to continue for some time. >> can i ask you about wnba star brittney griner. her detention in russia has been extended until may. you have the russians saying she's fine. she's reading books. the only issue is her bed is too small in her area where she's being detained. but i think behind the scenes you get the sense there's concern on the part of the u.s. what should we know? >> well, she pleaded not guilty and so they put her back in jail for two more months. no disrespect, but i've been in the russian prison system. it's not a pleasant place to be. i observed it. let me be clear. i was not being held there. when i was discover, i observed these places. you do not want to be there. it's shocking to me. i dealt with these kind of issues with much lower profile americans when i was ambassador and they are very hard to unstuck. i ho

give us the view on the ground from where you are, ali. >> hi, hallie. it shouldn't come as any big surprise that russia did exactly the opposite of what they said they would do. p and that's been backed up p by the head of nato, by u.s. officials, by zelenskyy and zelenskyy's commanders. there has been no dramatic withdrawal of troops from kyiv, from chernihiv and other areas. in fact, they've stepped up their assaults on those places. the russians said two nights ago that they were going to scale back their operations in order to build up mutual trust, but that's not what they've done. they continued to bomb kyiv even though they said they wouldn't. there's heavy fighting in the suburbs of kyiv. and when they made that statement, they shelled chernihiv all night, and that shelling continued well into the morning. so right now there might be a shift of focus to the donbas area. the only thing that has been truthful for them. and that's because the assault on kyiv has been such a disaster for the russians. and it doesn't look like they're going to give u

hallie? >> kelly, thank you. colonel kearney, let me go back to you here. as we pull up the map looking at the areas russia has taken in ukraine, areas under russian control, there are areas that are contested, for example. you heard john kirby talk about that. and the idea that the ukrainian resistance is putting up a fight. they are taking back some territory. he said west of kyiv. right? which is closer to lviv, closer to the areas that you see on the left side of the screen here. but in your view we've heard from british intelligence too, that the ukrainian resistance does appear to be real in some of these areas. how much longer can it last? >> i think i -- >> colonel kearney, if you can hear me. i don't know if you can. i think he has disconnected from the system. so dan de luce, i'll put that question to you instead. >> yeah, i mean clearly there has been very stiff resistance from the ukrainians, and it really raises -- first of all, you asked how long this can last, and i think we all have to be prepared for this lasting a long time. it could last

what these families have been going through. >> yeah, hallie.e of days. it is still an incredibly difficult and long journey for a lot of these families, just to get to that point. one or two days just to get to a border crossing. and once they cross through into neighboring countries, including poland, they are so traumatized, they're exhausted, and they've come with next to nothing. they need warm clothes, they need toiletry, they need a shower, they need just to sleep for a night. and we're seeing this huge volunteer effort. we've talked about it over the past couple of days. there's really no like one big ngo orchestrating all of this, particularly in poland. there are lots of tiny and volunteers who are chipping in. we went to a company today opening the offices to refugees and turned them into homes for 25 people. they were receiving another 16 this afternoon. we spoke to one of the employees and clear the emotional toll all of this is taking on refugees and the people who are witnessing this. take a listen. >> i was already had three brea
