. >> and i'm ken wayne. the 65-year-old man was plucked from the pacific ocean by a coast guard rescue team. he was taking part in an inaugural race when he was signaled in. patti lee joining us live from sfo where she just talked to them about the latest daring rescue, patti. >> reporter: so far five racers have had to be rescued by the coast guard crews out of this station. the great pacific race is describing itself as the biggest, baddest endurance challenge in the plant. and so far out of their contestants only seven remain. >> reporter: the 65-year-old experienced rower was 5 miles away when he had to be rescued. and the second involved getting these two rowers out of the water. the starting line of the race is in monterey. the finish 2,400 miles away in honolulu. the race has strict safety requirements and the coast guard says rescued rowers were prepared. >> all three devices played a key role and were essential to a quick recovery. >> reporter: you could hear the coast guard helicopter landing. they

i'm ken wayne. >> and i'm heather holmes. >> reporter: police were still out in force patrolling in large groups and you can see why. look at this crowd as people chanting and dancing here at fifth and market where we learn a taxi cab was hit by gunfire around 8:00 tonight. an hour earl littler a woman was shot in the arm in front of the war field theater. a half hour before that, at golden gate and hyde, the sound of gunfire led to a stampede and injuries. and steve bendinger tells me two men carrying guns was arrested at that scene. a total of two guns were confiscated and about as many arrests. san francisco police tell me they are still looking for the person who shot the woman in front of the warfield theater tonight. would be witnesses scattered at the time. now investigators are asking witnesses to give them a call. reporting live in san francisco, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> there were fewer problems though earlier in the day when huge crowds gathered for the 44th annual pride spread. coming up at 10:15, we'll take you to spade route where this year's event made history. >

good evening, i'm ken wayne. frank somerville is off tonight. >> and i'm julie haener. late word of an arrest in the last 40 minutes in san francisco with a series of arsons south of market. heather holmes broke this story about the search for a firebug exactly one week ago tonight, and she's live in the city with the word of the arrest. >> reporter: the suspect has been arrested. he is the man seen in those surveillance videos, and pictures we showed right here on the 10:00 news just last night. he has yet to be identified, but i'm told police will be giving more details sometime tomorrow. as we were first to report last week on this string of arsons, this suspect has been connected to at least a dozen fires. occupy buildings and dumpsters. julie, this has obviously kept the san francisco fire department's arson unit extremely busy over the past  few weeks. this has been their top priority. during my reporting, i have learned this has been a unit that has all but been eliminated. efforts are underway to try to bring back this unit to full force. >> restoring funding
